Can any show knock "Modern Family" from its throne as the two-time reigning Best Comedy Series at the 2012 Emmy Awards? Hoping to return to the competition are all of last year's nominees: "The Big Bang Theory," "Glee," 2006 winner "The Office," "Parks and Recreation," and three-time champ "30 Rock."
Another strong contender could be "Curb Your Enthusiasm," which has been nodded for six previous seasons but was not eligible last year. Other laffers that have had top bids before include "Desperate Housewives," "Entourage," "Family Guy," "How I Met Your Mother," "Nurse Jackie," "Two and a Half Men," and "Weeds."
Of the freshman shows, the top candidates include "Enlightened," "Girls," "Happily Divorced," "House of Lies," "Last Man Standing," "Life's Too Short," "New Girl," "Rob," "Suburgatory," "2 Broke Girls," "Up All Night," "Veep," and "Wilfred."
Then there are the ongoing programs that have never gained traction in this top race: "The Big C," "Bored to Death," "Californication," "Community," "Cougar Town," "Eastbound and Down," "Happy Endings," "Hot in Cleveland," "Hung," "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia," "Louie," "The Middle," "Mike and Molly," and "Raising Hope."
