"Jane Eyre" is the second Oscar nomination for Michael O'Connor, who previously won for "The Duchess." This category often favors the largest, most ornate costumes in period epics like "Shakespeare in Love," "Marie Antoinette," and "The Young Victoria," which may benefit the ornate garb worn in this 19th century literary adaptation.
This is the first Oscar nomination for costume designer Mark Bridges, who recreates the glamour of Hollywood in the 1920s in "The Artist." The film is the Best Picture frontrunner, like a previous lavish, showbiz-focused winner in this category, 2002's "Chicago."
This is the first nomination for Lisy Christl, who for "Anonymous" created elaborate costumes for its Elizabethan setting. That era has proven popular in this category.
"Hugo" is the tenth nomination for veteran costume designer Sandy Powell, who has been nominated for the last three years in a row. She has won three times: for "Shakespeare in Love" (1998), "The Aviator" (2004), and "The Young Victoria" (2009). Her costumes for "Hugo" include the everyday clothing worn in a 1930s Paris train station, as well as the costumes worn for George Melies's lavish film productions.
"W.E." is the second nomination for Arianne Phillips, who captures England's Edwardian era. She was previously nominated for costuming "Walk the Line" (2005).
