Drama Series

Emmy Awards history could be made this year when "Mad Men" tries for a record fifth win as Best Drama Series. While "Frasier" hit that number on the comedic side, "Mad Men" is currently tied with "Hill Street Blues," "L.A. Law," and "The West Wing" for the most ever for the dramas.

Things just got more difficult with the announcement that last year's movie/miniseries Emmy champ "Downton Abbey" is headed to the ballot for this race. With "Friday Night Lights" gone, there is certainly one guaranteed open slot, but the other four nominees from 2011 - "Boardwalk Empire," "Dexter," "Game of Thrones," and "The Good Wife" - would all like to return. Previous nominees "Breaking Bad," "Damages," "Grey's Anatomy," "House," and "True Blood" would also like to make a return appearance.

Golden Globe winner "Homeland" is also a strong contender for this category. Other freshman series in this field could include "Alcatraz," "Awake," "Boss," "The Client List," "Falling Skies," "Hell on Wheels," "Luck," "Magic City," "Once Upon a Time," "Pan Am," "Person of Interest," "Revenge," "Scandal," "Smash," "Suits," and "Touch."

Among the candidates that have tried before, possible shows include "The Borgias," "The Closer," "Fringe," "Harry's Law," "Justified," "The Killing," "Parenthood," "Rescue Me," "Shameless," "Sons of Anarchy," "Southland," "The Walking Dead," and "White Collar."
