Drama Actress

Last year, Julianna Margulies ("The Good Wife") finally won an Emmy Award as Best Drama Actress after several attempts for her current show and "E.R." She should be defending her crown again in 2012, possibly against four of last year's other nominees: Kathy Bates ("Harry's Law"), Mireille Enos ("The Killing"), Mariska Hargitay ("Law and Order: Special Victims Unit"), and Elisabeth Moss ("Mad Men"). Connie Britton ("Friday Night Lights") is no longer eligible, so there is one guaranteed open slot.

Previous winners Glenn Close ("Damages") and Kyra Segwick ("The Closer") would like to make a return to this category. Elizabeth McGovern ("Downton Abbey") was nodded in the movie/miniseries area last year but is now eligible for this race.

Ladies who have made unnoticed efforts to get nominated for their current roles are Dana Delany ("Body of Proof"), Michelle Dockery ("Downton Abbey"), Nina Dobrev ("The Vampire Diaries"), Angie Harmon and Sasha Alexander ("Rizzoli and Isles"), Stana Katic ("Castle"), Mary McCormack ("In Plain Sight"), Anna Paquin ("True Blood"), Piper Perabo ("Covert Affairs"), Emmy Rossum ("Shameless"), Katey Sagal ("Sons of Anarchy"), and Anna Torv ("Fringe").

From the rookie shows, the top candidates could be Golden Globe winner Claire Danes ("Homeland"), Sarah Michelle Gellar ("Ringer"), Ginnifer Goodwin ("Once Upon a Time"), Taraji P. Henson ("Person of Interest"), Jennifer Love Hewitt ("The Client List"), Debra Messing ("Smash"), Poppy Montgomery ("Unforgettable"), Callie Thorne ("Necessary Roughness"), Madeleine Stowe and Emily VanCamp ("Revenge"), and Kerry Washington ("Scandal").
