Best Costume Design

Costume Design overwhelmingly favors period films. In the last 20 years, only one contemporary film has won -- "Priscilla, Queen of the Desert" -- as have three fantasy films: "Dracula," "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King," and "Alice in Wonderland." Last year, the Oscar went to Mark Bridges for "The Artist," set in 1920s Hollywood, and he is a longshot to be nominated this year for "The Master."

Lavish costume dramas are the way to win this race, as evidenced by this quarter of winners beginning in 2006 -- "Marie Antoinette," "Elizabeth: The Golden Age," "The Duchess" and "Young Victoria."

Jacqueline Durran picked up Oscar bids for her last two collaborations with helmer Joe Wright on "Pride and Prejudice" and "Atonement." Our Experts expect third time to be the charm as she is far out in front for "Anna Karenina." (See latest odds here)

In second place is Paco Delgado who could reap his first Oscar bid for "Les Miserables" while Joanna Johnston could do the same for "Lincoln."  (Track changing odds in this race by scrolling down to the bottom of this page.)

"Dracula's" winning designer Eiko Ishioka died of cancer in January 2012. She could earn a posthumous nomination this year for another fantasy film: Tarsem Singh's "Mirror Mirror."

Other fantasies in contention include "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" (Ann Maskrey and five-time Oscar winner Richard Taylor) and "Snow White and the Huntsman" (three-time winner Colleen Atwood).
