Best Sound Mixing

In the last five years, the Oscars for Best Sound Mixing and Best Sound Editing have gone to the same film four times: "The Bourne Ultimatum" (2007), "The Hurt Locker" (2009), "Inception" (2010), and "Hugo" (2011).

The two categories often go hand-in-hand, but not always. In recent years, music-driven films "Dreamgirls," "Ray," and "Chicago" have won Sound Mixing, but not Sound Editing. Superhero films "The Incredibles" and "The Dark Knight" won Sound Editing, but not Mixing.

War films are often honored in the sound categories. In addition to "The Hurt Locker," "Letters from Iwo Jima," "Black Hawk Down," "Pearl Harbor," and "Saving Private Ryan" have won sound awards in recent years.

Like Best Visual Effects, Oscar's sound categories often favor big-budget action film. Such winners in recent years include "The Dark Knight," "King Kong," "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers" and "Return of the King," and "The Matrix."

Steven Spielberg's films often do very well in this category, including last year's Mixing and Editing nominee "War Horse." This year his Civil War-set biopic "Lincoln" could be recognized for its achievements in sound.

Pixar films have earned a number of sound nominations ("WALL-E," "Up," "Toy Story 3"), and "The Incredibles" won Sound Editing in 2004. The animation giant's latest film, "Brave," could be a contender this year.

Other possible contenders this year include "Zero Dark Thirty," "The Avengers," "Les Miserables," "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey," "Life of Pi," "The Impossible," and "The Bourne Legacy."
