While Meryl Streep has racked up a record number of Oscar nominations -- she picked up No. 17 this year for her leading performance in "The Iron Lady" -- she has also endured the most losses of any performer with 14 defeats and just two wins. Compare that stat to the track records of all-time champ Katharine Hepburn (4 wins/8 losses) and Streep's friend and co-star Jack Nicholson (3 wins/9 losses).
Streep lost her first bids in both Supporting Actress ("The Deer Hunter," 1978) and Actress ("The French Lieutenant's Woman," 1981). She was defeated in that latter race by Hepburn who picked up her record fourth Best Actress Oscar for "On Golden Pond."
Streep won each award on her second try with a featured performance in "Kramer vs. Kramer" (1979) and a lead turn in "Sophie's Choice" (1982).
