An Oscar nomination failed to help Ashvin Kumar back home in India: "Winning accolades at international film festivals and being nominated at the Oscars didn't make it any easier for Ashvin Kumar to release his film in India. The 39-year-old film-maker waited for six years to release his debut feature 'The Forest,' and says being nominated for an Oscar (for his 2004 short film 'Little Terrorist') didn't help. 'It makes no difference. If it did, do you think I'd be running around arranging finances for my next film and trying to get this one released?' Kumar said. 'The Forest' has been ready since 2006, but the film-maker said its release was stuck for several reasons, including a fallout with a producer." REUTERS

In addition, TBS has purchased the rights to 'Cougar Town's' first three seasons of 61 episodes that originally aired on ABC. '"Cougar Town" is a smart, whimsical sitcom that draws its humor from likable, relatable characters' said Michael Wright, president, head of programming for TBS. 'We are thrilled to have "Cougar Town" moving to the TBS neighborhood as the network continues to expand its slate of original comedy series.'" EW.COM

Tony nominations shake up Broadway ticket sales: "According to figures posted by 'The Broadway League,' Broadway gross ticket sales totaled $25.2 million compared to $26.1 million the previous week. Twenty-four shows had a decrease in sales while 15 saw an increase. 'There are small fluctuations in ticket sales all the time,' Amanda Pekoe, president of theatrical marketing and advertising company The Pekoe Group, told TicketNews via email. 'With Tony nominations just announced, the playing field is changed somewhat with respect to ticket buying patterns. People may be waiting to buy tickets to the show they truly want to see, rather than buying tickets to their second or third choices.'" TICKET NEWS

Harris] said in a joint statement. They added, 'Nothing would make us prouder than to have more Tonys than any other show on Broadway on Sunday, June 10.'"

Oscars go outdoors: "While the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences may seem like a highly restrictive group — and it is, if you want to win one of those golden statuettes — the organization is expanding its outreach to regular moviegoers by announcing a summer-long series of outdoor movies. 'Oscars Outdoors' will showcase films on Fridays and Saturdays on a 40-by-20 foot screen in a park the organization built in the heart of Hollywood specifically for the sake of showing movies under the stars. The public is welcome, and the Academy is especially hopeful tourists will take advantage of it." EW.COM

The Royal Philharmonic Society Awards honor classical music: "Where the Oscars are all tinsel, tears and fake emotion, the RPS event is an occasion when the music world gets genuine and decent. OK, it's a niche industry celebrating its own with the blowing of trumpets, but last night's celebration at the Dorchester Hotel was also a roomful of people taking real delight in the achievement of others. And the trumpeting had the endearing awkwardness of a community that feels, these days, a bit too niche. It wasn't brazen, it was heartfelt – all the better for the fact that the RPS is good at getting the tone of these things right. No razzmatazz, no gush, but warm and dignified appreciation. Just as it should be." THE TELEGRAPH

NBC is set to renew its Thursday comedies: "It looks like NBC‘s 30 Rock will be back for a likely abbreviated seventh and final season. I hear the Emmy-winning comedy has closed deals with its key high-level writers to return for what is expected to be a final season of 13-14 episodes ... As for NBC’s other bubble comedies, newbie 'Whitney' does not appear likely to return. Fellow freshman 'Up All Night' has been looking better ... Meanwhile, veterans 'Community' and 'Parks and Recreation' both are in the running, with Parks’ renewal considered likely. I hear that, like '30 Rock,' all returning NBC comedy series are likely to get short orders. That would save some coin and allow NBC to pick up more new comedies." DEADLINE

Despite a Best Musical Tony nomination, "Leap of Faith" will close on May 13: "Just a week after being snubbed for nominations in every major Tony Award category — except, ironically, Best Musical — the stage production of 'Leap of Faith' will close on Broadway on Sunday, May 13, after 24 previews and 20 regular performances. Really, it didn’t have a prayer. 'Leap of Faith,' which stars Raul Esparza as a duplicitous faith healer in rural Kansas, has been steadily declining in its box office take since its opening on April 26." EW.COM

News Nuggets: Directors Guild amends rules to allow FYC screeners

DGA to allow awards seson screeners. From our press release: "The DGA had a longstanding policy of not allowing awards season screeners.  The Guild believed that films sent out on DVD could have an advantage over films that are not able to be sent out due to limited marketing budgets or other financial constraints of studios and distributors.  Additionally, most DGA members have numerous opportunities to see films in awards contention in other ways. However, in the annual review of all policies and procedures related to Awards after the conclusion of each awards season, it became clear that the industry standard has changed and the majority of guilds and other entertainment community bodies allow “for your consideration” DVDs."

Grammy's pop problem: "Case in point, Beyonce has 16 Grammys. Patti LaBelle has two. Aretha Franklin has 18. Chaka Khan has 10. What kind of sense does this make? Beyonce has two less than the undisputed Queen of Soul, 14 more than a woman whose vocal heights she dreams about, and six more than the Queen of Funk and big hair. That makes no sense. The Grammys used to be a respected institution. It was the place music fans and artists went to settle disputes over who was the best once and for all. The judgement of the Grammy committee used to be spot on. Now they just give awards away to whoever had the biggest smash year. Musical integrity has been lost for popularity." THY BLACK MAN

"Once" to begin a national tour in 2013: "The producers of 'Once,' the acclaimed new Broadway musical, announced today that The Road Company is putting together a US national tour that will launch in the summer of 2013. The most nominated new musical of the season, with more Tony Award nominations (11) than any other show, 'Once' opened on at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre (242 West 45th Street) on Sunday, March 18, 2012 to rave reviews." BROADWAY WORLD

WGA holds a memorial tribute to writer Hal Kanter: "It was a very funny, sometimes touching, but mostly uproarious tribute Sunday afternoon at the Writers Guild Theatre in Beverly Hills. The WGA West and the Writers Guild Foundation along with the Kanter family held a well produced and attended memorial for one of their most illustrious members, Hal Kanter, who passed away in November at age 92. The three-time Emmy winner (and seven time nominee) was also believed to be the only person ever to win all three of the Guild’s prestigious special honors – the Morgan Cox award for service to the WGA, the Paddy Chayefsky Laurel Award, the Valentine Davies Award." "Sherlock" returns to PBS to strong ratings: "Sunday night's premiere of 'Masperiece Mystery!'s' second season averaged 3.2 million viewers, not including those viewing through station replays, DVRs or online streaming. The premiere of the second season of the BAFTA Award-winning series more than doubled the average PBS primetime rating (based on metered market averages). New episodes of 'Sherlock' debut each Sunday night on 'Masterpiece' through May 20." THE FUTON CRITIC

Firestorm erupts over a Radio Times BAFTA poll: "While fans of Benedict Cumberbatch's portrayal of Sherlock Holmes or of Dominic West's role as Fred West have together clocked up only 4,000 votes in the best leading actor poll, more than half a million voters across the world have backed the film 'Shouting in the Dark,' made in Bahrain by journalist May Ying Welsh for al-Jazeera. Another half a million have voted for Channel 4's film 'Sri Lanka's Killing Fields,' fronted by Jon Snow. Welsh's film, which was shot undercover over three months, went out on al-Jazeera's English-speaking channel last summer and provoked outrage among officials in Bahrain. They claimed it painted an unfair picture of police brutality during the uprising and played down the involvement of Iranian-backed subversives among the crowds." THE GUARDIAN

News Nuggets: The film legacy of Adam Yauch

Martin Scorsese, Jay Z, Moneyball, Woody Harrelson, Jonah Hill, Oren Moverman, Beastie Boys, Film, Music, TV

May 06 2012 | 09:19 am

A look at the film achievemens of the Beastie Boys' late Adam Yauch: "Yauch's creative reach was significant in the film world as well. And his tenure as a driving force behind indie distributor Oscilloscope Laboratories has ushered brave pick-ups and challenging cinematic material to the fore for the last four years or so. Awards success greeted a few of those titles. Most significant was a Best Supporting Actor nomination for Woody Harrelson as well as a Best Original Screenplay nomination for Alessandro Camon and Oren Moverman for 'The Messenger' in 2009, which itself flirted with the first-ever expanded Best Picture line-up during that season." Oscilloscope to attend Cannes despite Adam Yauch's death: "Dan Berger and David Laub, who just a day ago were promoted to jointly oversee marketing, distribution and acquisitions for the indie film company, will attend this month’s festival, Deadline has learned. Debra Fisher, who runs digital and TV sales for the company, also is headed to Cannes. Oscilloscope president David Fenkel, who co-founded the indie distributor with Yauch, will not attend because of a family matter. The plan Thursday to elevate Berger and Laub called for Fenkel to segue into a consulting role at the company. That will remain the case, though after Yauch’s passing he will be more heavily involved in the day-to-day running of the New York-based company than previously thought." DEADLINE

Jay-Z world record will be broken for the 3rd O Music Awards: "MTV and the Viacom Music Group are returning to the birthplace of rock 'n' roll for the third O Music Awards, staging a road trip from Memphis to New Orleans in which one band will break the Guinness World Record for 'Most Live Concerts' in 24 hours. That record currently belongs to Jay-Z ... 'We’re collapsing the show and a world record into one seamless experience,' Shannon Connolly, VP of digital music strategy for MTV, told TheWrap. 'In the past, we had a lead-up with the world record attempt and then a show. With this one it’s all combined and it will make for some really interesting storytelling.' Tony Award snubs claim their first victims: "Teresa Rebeck's comedy 'Seminar,' which received no nominations, quickly announced that it would shutter this Sunday. Jeff Goldblum recently stepped into the play to take over for Alan Rickman. Next up to the guillotine is the basketball drama 'Magic/Bird,' which also got no recognition from Tony nominators. The show ends on May 12. 'Though it ran a limited time, it attracted many new audiences to the theater as well as provided a vehicle for many young people to attend their first show,' its producers said in a statement." BAFTA honors Rolf Harris with an Academy Fellowship: "Rolf Harris’ broadcast career may have started alongside a puppet called Fuzz, but the Australian presenter, musician and artist has been a regular fixture on TV screens since he signed with the BBC in 1953. Six decades later, 82-year-old Harris is being honoured with Bafta's highest award, a fellowship, to be received at the TV Awards on Sunday 27 May at London's Royal Festival Hall. Generations of Britons have grown up watching Harris' work, which includes 'Rolf’s Cartoon Club,' 'Rolf on Art,' and 'Animal Hospital.'" TELEGRAPH

Chris Rock is one of the irreverant presenters at the Comedy Awards: "Opening the second-annual Comedy Awards, recorded last Saturday and being shown on Sunday night on Comedy Central, he was more blunt. Of the eligible comics for best comedy special, he said, three are funny, one used to be and another never was. Then he assured the audience he was not joking. Then he took it back. Whether you believed him didn’t really matter, since Mr. Rock accomplished something remarkable: He made everyone listen closely to the roll call of nominees. They were Louis C.K., Norm MacDonald, Patton Oswalt, Colin Quinn and someone who I suspect didn’t like the joke, Daniel Tosh." NEW YORK TIMES

"A Separation" receives yet another honor, this time in Italy: "Internationally-acclaimed Iranian drama was awarded for the Best Foreign Language film at the 2012 David di Donatello Awards, which is considered the Italian equivalent to the Academy Award. Emmy-nominee and BAFTA-winner Steven Moffat discusses his updated "Sherlock": "'There are very, very few people who can play Sherlock Holmes, and there have been so many and so few good ones,' Moffat tells Fresh Air's TV critic David Bianculli ... Moffat and his wife, a producer on the series, were on the hunt for their Sherlock when they first noticed [Benedict Cumberbatch] playing a supporting role in the 2007 film 'Atonement.' 'He was a brilliant actor, he had the look, [and we thought] "Let's send the script to him,"' he says. 'And we did. He came in and read for it. And after he read for it, we just thought, "There's really no point in looking anywhere else. There really isn't."'" NPR

Daytime Emmys headed to HLN? "The Daytime Emmy Awards are headed to Time Warner’s HLN/Headline News network, according to Broadcasting & Cable. The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences also hopes to secure AOL as the awards show’s social media parter. Nominations for the Daytime Emmys had been expected to be announced Friday but have been delayed until Wednesday May 9 to give NATAS time to wrap up those deals ... Black Journalists Association's award to Beyonce draws criticism: "... Michael Feeney, the president of the New York chapter of the black journalists association, said Beyoncé had 'won fair and square' ... Still, some online columnists, like Amber Rose writing for the Mused online magazine, questioned whether Beyoncé had written the piece herself. 'These types of awards overlook the real journalists who write about insightful and sometimes dangerous topics,' Ms. Rose wrote. 'Beyoncé is getting an award along with Robert Naylor, a thirty-year reporter who chaired the Associated Press Diversity Council and founding member of the LGBT Task Force and the late Gil Noble, who hosted “Like It Is” since 1967 and interviewed Adam Clayton Powell, Muhammad Ali, Bill Cosby and Dr. Martin Luther King. Beyoncé wrote an article about a 9-month vacation.'" NEW YORK TIMES

"Modern Family" wins Catholic Media Group honor: "The group Catholic in Media Associates (CIMA) has awarded ABC hit show 'Modern Family' its Best Television Show of 2012 award. The awards, known as the Catholic Oscars (or in this case Emmys), seeks to recognize people and pieces of work that 'uplift the spirit and help us better understand what it is to be part of the human family.' The group formed, it has said, to 'counter the image of Catholics as people who criticize what they don’t like' ... However, 'Modern Family' has drawn the ire of religious conservatives and especially for its depiction of gay couple Cam (Eric Stonestreet) and Mitch (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) who in the show are raising their adopted daughter." Could the MTV Movie Awards be good this year? "It's a promising year for the MTV Movie Awards for a couple of reasons. While the last few ceremonies have been seemingly rigged by Twihards, the recent change to the voting system could finally mean some new blood (resisting a 'Twilight' joke) at the podium on June 3. Of course, it would still be nearly impossible to unseat Kristen Stewart, Rob Pattinson, or Taylor Lautner with this crowd if that franchise didn't have a formidable successor. Though 'The Hunger Games' has very little in common with the weak-kneed vampire franchise in terms of substance, it stands to inherit its fan base." SPIN

Denis Leary pokes fun at himself at the Television Academy Honors: "'I have to be very honest with you,' said Leary, who was being honored for 'Rescue Me' with fellow exec producer Peter Tolan. 'I don't ever win awards. We're 0 for 8 at Emmys (except) for Michael J. Fox, and that doesn't really count. 'I’ve won two awards. About six months after I won my Cable Ace award … they canceled the Cable Aces. I won a Blockbuster Award. About three months after that, they abolished the Blockbuster Award. Abolished. How to pick a winning Emmy submission: "Most contenders and advisors are well aware of near-winners who might have taken home a prize with a better approach — like 'Roseanne' also-ran John Goodman, and, most famously, Susan Lucci, who lost 18 times before finally landing a Daytime Emmy. 'You have to exert shrewdness and sometimes deviousness,' said Tom O’Neil, founder of the awards-tracking website Gold Derby. But it seems he has his heart set on an Academy Award. He added: 'They just don't win these awards. "Bridesmaids," I think, got nominated for a screen award, but, no. Woody Allen only started getting nominated for Oscars when he got slightly less funny.'" UK PRESS ASSOCIATION

Beyonce wins a journalism award: "In the lead up to the release of her fantastic album '4,' Beyonce was all about spreading the word about how awesome it was to take several months off ...
