Louis C.K., Bjork among Webby Award winners: "Comedian Louis C.K. picked up the top honor, person of the year, from the Webby Awards on Tuesday, while social networking newcomers Pinterest, Spotify and Instagram were singled out for being Internet innovators ... Icelandic singer Bjork was named artist of the year for her multimedia 'app album,' 'Biophilia,' while actress Juliette Lewis and comedian Graydon Sheppard were singled out for their original Youtube series 'Sh*t Girls Say,' which became a viral phenomenon last December, generating 16.2 million views." Motion Picture Academy celebrates Gene Kelly centennial: "The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will present a two-night celebration of the life and career of legendary dancer, director and choreographer Gene Kelly on the 100th anniversary of his birth. Film clips, personal remembrances and an exploration of the technology Kelly used to change the look of dance on film will be featured on consecutive evenings: Thursday, May 17, at 7:30 p.m. at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills, and Friday, May 18, at 7:30 p.m. at the Linwood Dunn Theater in Hollywood. Both programs will be hosted by Kelly’s widow, film historian Patricia Ward Kelly." DEADLINE

Tony-nominee Cristin Milioti talks about winning her coveted role in "Once": "I auditioned for the Girl, but the part had already been cast before the audition had even been held so I ended up playing Réza, the Girl's flat mate. We did the reading, and then a day or two later the director called and said that he wanted me to come in and audition for the Girl again for everyone, and he really pushed for me the entire time. I was deemed not a good enough piano player ... So they gave me ten days to learn two songs on the piano, and I did. I came in and I played 'The Hill,' and I got it." ROLLING STONE

Motion Picture Academy announces the finalists for student Oscars: "Thirty-five students from 20 U.S. colleges and universities have been selected as finalists in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ 39th Annual Student Academy Awards competition. Academy members will view the finalists’ films at special screenings and vote to select the winners. Gold, Silver and Bronze Medal awards, along with accompanying cash grants of $5,000, $3,000 and $2,000 respectively, may be presented in each of four categories: Alternative, Animation, Documentary and Narrative." Is it a good idea to simplify Canada's TV and film awards? "The Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television’s announcement Tuesday that it will combine its annual film, television and digital media awards into a single gala event will be welcome news to those who could never separate the Genies from the Geminis. It may also have the added benefit of drawing more attention to efforts to create a purely homegrown star system. And it may encourage more people to watch Canadian TV programs, or see Canadian movies, if they now know those movies exist. There will be complaints from some of those who work in the industry, no doubt. Canadian television insiders like the idea of a gala evening devoted entirely to TV, and filmmakers are probably no different" CANADA.COM

Sissy Spacek and William Friedkin will be honored at the Seattle Film Festival: "Sissy Spacek will receive the festival’s award for Outstanding Achievement in Acting on June 7 and William Friedkin will be presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award on June 9. 'Sissy Spacek and William Friedkin have captivated audiences repeatedly throughout their careers with critically acclaimed works that boast multigenerational appeal,' said SIFF Artistic Director Carl Spence via press release." News Nuggets: Dick Clark Productions wins Golden Globes trial

Dick Clark Productions wins Golden Globes trial: "The Hollywood Foreign Press Assn., owner of the Golden Globe Awards, had sued Dick Clark Productions, the program's longtime producer, over a $150-million deal DCP had struck in 2010 to keep the show on NBC through 2018. The suit was filed in U.S. District Court for the Central District of California ... In a rebuke to the HFPA, not only did Judge Howard Matz side with Dick Clark Productions, he also said that what was essentially a contract dispute should have never ended up in a courtroom and that the HFPA 'suffered from the absence of sound, businesslike practices.'" DocuWeeks will persevere despite Oscar's amended documentary rules: "DocuWeeks, the annual showcase designed by the International Documentary Association to qualify docs for the Academy Awards, will serve in that function again this year, despite attempts in the Academy's Documentary Branch to end its qualifier status. IDA executive director Michael Lumpkin told TheWrap on Monday that the Los Angeles Times has agreed to review all the films in this year's DocuWeeks, which will run from August 10 through August 30 at the Laemmle NoHo 7 in North Hollywood, and from August 3 though August 23 at the IFC Center in New York." THE WRAP

Fun. will perform at the MTV Movie Awards: "'It's one of the most flattering things that's happened to us on this rollercoaster ride of this song and this album, because I just remember watching all those award shows — like the Video Music Awards and Movie Awards — and you always wonder like how they're doing it, what their big reveal is going to be, all those other type of things,' [frontman Andrew] Ruess said. 'We've had meetings about how our set's going to be and what it's going to look like, and it's so exciting. It's so exciting how much effort MTV puts into this show, like, we have to show up and play the song, but they build this whole entire world around us, and it's so amazing.'" MTV

NBC is the top winner at the Sports Emmys: "ESPN led the field in nominations, but it was the NBC Sports Group on Monday night that walked off with nine winners — more than any network — at the Sports Emmy Awards dinner in New York. Six of the NBC awards involved its NFL coverage, including Cris Collinsworth as outstanding sports-event analyst and Michele Tafoya as outstanding sports reporter. Among the other key individual awards were NBC/MLB Network’s Bob Costas (studio host), Fox’s Joe Buck (play-by-play) and TNT/NBA-TV’s Charles Barkley (studio analyst)." ALBANY TIMES UNION

"In Living Color" alum Damon Wayans snubbed the TV Land Awards: "Wayans, who is credited as co-creator of 'In Living Color' with his brother Keenen Ivory Wayans, was a key 'In Living Color' writer-performer and played some of its most memorable characters. Sources close to the actor say he declined to attend the ceremony “because it just wasn’t his thing.” But while [Jamie Foxx] (as well as every other 'In Living Color' alum) allowed TV Land to use 'ILC' footage on the awards special, Damon Wayans declined the network’s request for permission to use any scenes with him. Clips with Damon were shown at the event but, as a result of his decision, such classics as Men on Film and Homey D. Clown had to be cut out of the TV special." DEADLINE

The former Kodak Theater becomes the Dolby Theater: "After some back and forth with CIM Group, commercial real estate owner of the theare (formerly known as the Kodak) at the Hollywood & Highland complex that has been home to the Oscars for the last decade, a new deal has been struck to keep the annual show there for another 20 years. According to a press release, another deal was also struck, with Dolby Laboratories, Inc., to name the venue The Dolby Theatre. So it's goodbye Kodak, hello Dolby." IN CONTENTION

"Bridesmaids" and "The Hunger Games" dominate the nominations for the 21st annual edition of the MTV Movie Awards with eight bids apiece. For the first time, the net convened a panel of industry experts to determine the contenders in the dozen races. (See full list of nominations here.)

News Nuggets: Should orchestration be restored to the Drama Desk Awards?

Jim Parsons, Neil Patrick Harris, Garret Dillahunt, Alan Cumming, Brad Pitt, Kristin Chenoweth, Peter and the Starcatcher, Killing Them Softly, Andrew Dominik, Patti Murin, Film, Theater

By Daniel Montgomery

Entertainment Weekly offers its final Tony nominee predictions: "... whose names will be called when Kristin Chenoweth and Jim Parsons announce the nominations this Tuesday at 8:30 a.m.? After the jump, check out our predictions in the major categories. (The awards will be handed out June 10 at the Beacon Theatre, in a Neil Patrick Harris-hosted ceremony airing on CBS.) Disagree with our picks? Well, that’s why the gods of theater (and websites) created the comments section!" EW.COM

Lobbying to reinstate orchestration to the Drama Desk Awards: "Many orchestrators and composers, immediately took to social media to express their disappointment and outrage about the elimination of the category. Now, a change.org petition has launched to bring the category back, with 1545 signatures at press time including well known industry members like Lin-Manuel Miranda, George Stiles, Larry Hochman, Alex Lacamoire, Lea Salonga, Larry Blank, Ann Harada, Marc Shaiman, Stephen Oremus, Kate Shindle, Jerry Mitchell, Patti Murin, Liz Caplan, Ted Sperling, Rob Sher, Adam Pascal among many other artists, musicians and fans." BROADWAY WORLD

"Peter and the Starcatcher" graduates from San Diego's La Jolla Playhouse to Tony contender: "The Tony Awards nominations are announced Tuesday, and a few locally linked shows — most prominently the La Jolla Playhouse-bred 'Peter and the Starcatcher' — are in the running. Our Front Row theater panelists, including two who worked on 'Peter' in La Jolla three years ago, offer their takes on the Tonys ..." UT SAN DIEGO

Tribeca Film Festival Audience Award winners announced: "'Any Day Now,' a drama about gay adoption from director Travis Fine, has won the Tribeca Film Festival's Heineken Audience Award for the festival's favorite narrative feature. In a Saturday night festival wrap party in New York, the Detroit-set documentary 'Burn' was named the favorite documentary. 'Any Day Now' stars Alan Cumming as an aspiring singer who, together with his closeted district attorney partner (Garret Dillahunt), tries to adopt a teenager with Down syndrome (Isaac Leyva) ... 'Burn' (below) follows Detroit's new Fire Commissioner, Donald Austin, as he attempts to help rebuild the devastated city." THE WRAP

Previewing Cannes Film Festival selection "Killing Them Softly": "The Playlist quotes actor Garret Dillahunt as saying [Andrew Dominik's] initial 150-minute cut had to be sheared by almost an hour. That's neither here nor there, as is the film's rather annoying title change -- though if it turns out to disappoint, these will be retroactively flagged as symptoms. Dominik's an odd, distinctive talent, and [Brad Pitt's] in the form of his life -- there's much to be hopeful for here." IN CONTENTION

News Nuggets: Ang Lee's 'Life of Pi' flooded with premature Oscar buzz at CinemaCon

Christopher Nolan, The Hobbit An Unexpected Journey, Peter Jackson, Life of Pi, Ang Lee, Film, Music

By Daniel Montgomery
Apr 28 2012 | 12:20 pm

CinemaCon becomes flooded with Oscar talk: "As it pertains to potential awards contenders, they've shown some much-anticipated footage from Peter Jackson's "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" in 48 frames-per-second, which yielded responses from mixed to overwhelmingly negative (a few champions of the hyper-real look scattered here and there). Today, though, 'Oscar' was on everyone's lips after a taste of Ang Lee's 'Life of Pi' ... But really, when you see a little bit of impressive footage from an upcoming film, you should be saying, 'I want to see more.' Not, 'It's an absolute contender for Best Picture.'" IN CONTENTION

Wearying of the premature Oscar hype for "Life of Pi" at CinemaCon: "Every year, studios, exhibitors and press gather in Vegas for the annual hype harvest that is CinemaCon (née ShoWest), glimpsing first looks, clips and other previews of hotly anticipated movies to come. Surprises invariably appear, for better or worse, and conversations naturally ensue. Fine. What is not fine — at all — is grounding an Oscar frenzy in 10 minutes of footage from an unfinished film with a release date eight months away." MOVIELINE

Brian McKnight receives an offer to perform at the AVN Awards: "Brian McKnight's X-rated new song caused quite a stir earlier in the week, and the classic R&B singer still hasn't heard the end of it. According to TMZ, McKnight's latest effort has made him the toast of the porn industry, and he's recently been invited to perform at next year's AVN Awards — which are the Oscars of porn. The 16-time Grammy nominee gained the attention of the adult audience when he previewed an explicit song called 'If You're Ready To Learn' on YouTube ... It's not clear yet whether McKnight is taking any of this seriously, but he revealed on Twitter that he plans on releasing 'If You're Ready To Learn' to iTunes next Tuesday." BET

The MTV Movie Awards seek to boost their credibility: "'We want the show to be a little more of  a celebration of why we love movies,' MTV President Stephen Friedman said in an interview at his offices this week, noting that he felt the program, for all its fan enthusiasm, was sometimes too irreverent toward the filmmaking process, undercutting the point of a movie-awards show in the first place ... 'If you look back, this show was among the first places to tell you about Christopher Nolan when he had "Memento," just as MTV is the first place to tell viewers about a new band that they need to know,' Friedman said. 'We really want to go back to doing that.'" LOS ANGELES TIMES

The Latin Grammys return to Las Vegas for the fifth time: "The Latin Recording Academy announced Thursday that the show is set for Thursday, Nov. 15, at the Mandalay Bay Events Center on the Las Vegas Strip. It will air live on Univision. A month of Latin Grammy-themed cultural events, street parties and recording sessions are scheduled to lead up to what organizers call the biggest night in Latin music. The awards honor Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking artists and other professionals in their industry." SEATTLE TIMES

News Nuggets: The MTV Movie Awards make drastic changes

All My Children, Days of Our Lives, The Bold and the Beautiful, One Life to Live, Downton Abbey, Romola Garai, Jean Dujardin, Dominic West, The Hour, Appropriate Adult, Film, TV

By Daniel Montgomery
Apr 26 2012 | 12:42 pm

The MTV Movie Awards add new categories, change voting: "Among the changes announced today are five new categories — including Best Music, Best On-Screen Transformation and the soon-to-be-classic Best On-Screen Dirt Bag — as well as a new system of nominations based on an anonymous panel of actors, producers, industry folks and 'members of the MTV audience,' says a press release ... Let’s be real: The new voting system, as well-intended and smart as it sounds, won’t help matters if the voting is still left up to the public. For every casual voter that may choose to honor Jean Dujardin, there are at least nine others who will see 'Bella Swan' and launch into cosmic giddiness resulting in another unsurprising win for the 'Twilight Saga.'" EW.COM

Simon Cowell's BAFTA snub is significant: "It is the first time he hasn’t had a show in the Best Entertainment category since 2007. 'X Factor' lost out to 'The Cube' last year but has previously won Baftas in 2006 and 2009, while 'Britain’s Got Talent' has been nominated twice for the previous five series ... A source said: 'This is a very big blow for Simon. The Baftas are the most prestigious awards in Britain and "Britain’s Got Talent" and "X Factor" are two of the biggest shows on telly.'" THE SUN

What dramas will be nominated for Daytime Emmys this year? "The Daytime Emmy nominations will be announced May 4 so it's time to do some handicapping! Will CBS' 'The Bold and the Beautiful' score a nod in the best soap race and go on to win an unprecedented fourth award in a row? Will ABC's axed soaps, 'All My Children' and 'One Life to Live,' have the last laugh? Will NBC's 'Days of Our Lives' ever get some respect? TV Guide Magazine took a look at each of the episodes submitted for the Outstanding Daytime Drama prize by the six qualifying soaps (the hour shows selected two episodes, half-hour 'B&B' got to pick four). Here's how they stack up." SEATTLE PI

Jimmy Kimmel compares hosting the Emmys to the White House Correspondents Dinner: "I’m definitely more nervous about the correspondents audience because I don’t know those people. I’m an outsider in Washington, for sure, and I think a mistake that one could make is pretending to be an insider when you aren’t one. I don’t want to do any jokes I might not actually get." HUFFINGTON POST

"The Hour" star Anna Chancellor celebrates her first BAFTA nomination: "The actress said she was 'very thrilled' that she was in the race for best supporting actress for her role in the BBC's 1950s-set current affairs drama 'The Hour' ... 'It's a game isn't it,' laughed the actress. 'It's great but if you don't get nominated for an award it's fine too.' She revealed that in series two of 'The Hour,' Lix Storm has a 'very repressed' love story with a character played by Peter Capaldi. Chancellor's co-stars in 'The Hour' - Dominic West and Romola Garai - are also nominated for Baftas for other shows, 'Appropriate Adult' (Dominic West) and 'The Crimson Petal and the White' (Romola Garai)." BBC

Are BAFTA TV Awards elitist for snubbing the UK's biggest hits? "BBC1’s 'Call the Midwife' and ITV1’s 'Downton Abbey' will not be battling it out for this year’s best drama gong despite huge ratings. Instead, the prize will go to BBC3’s 'The Fades,' E4’s 'Misfits,' ITV’s 'Scott & Bailey' or BBC1’s axed spy series 'Spooks.' One BBC insider raged: 'We are furious. Bafta are elitist and out of touch. What do you have to do to get a Bafta nomination? Great writing – check. Brilliant performances – check. Amazing audience ratings – check. It’s as if being popular counts against you.'" DAILY RECORD

Emmy-winners Julie Bowen and Ty Burrell will host the Billboard Music Awards: "EW has learned exclusively that Emmy Award-winning pair Julie Bowen and Ty Burrell, best known as Claire and Phil Dunphy on 'Modern Family,' will host the 2012 Billboard Music Awards on May 20. The pair, who won Emmys in the Supporting Actor categories last year, are following in the footsteps of 'Community' actor Ken Jeong, who helmed the award show and received largely favorable reviews. The Billboard Music Awards will air on ABC at 8 p.m. ET." EW.COM

"Monsieur Lazhar" wins the Audience Award at the RiverRun Film Festival: "The feature, which was nominated for the best foreign-language film Oscar, also received awards for best actor Mohamed Fellaq, who plays the title role, and Falardeu’s screenplay from the festival’s narrative film jury. The jury also awarded the Peter Brunette Award for best director, named after The Hollywood Reporter’s late film reviewer, to Julia Murat, who directed the Brazilian feature 'Found Memories,' about the residents of a remote village who are, quite literally, fading away as they go about their daily rituals." HOLLYWOOD REPORTER

"The Help" director Tate Taylor will adapt a British miniseries: "Tate Taylor, who last wrote and directed the Best Picture nominee 'The Help,' is in talks with Fox 2000 to write and direct 'The Jury.' The film is a movie transfer of the Granada-produced 2002 British miniseries that was written by Peter Morgan and directed by Pete Travis. The mini focuses on the inner workings of the trial of a young Sikh student charged with murdering a classmate tormenter." DEADLINE

Highlights of this year's Heley Hayes Awards: "Kevin Spacey drops the F-bomb — twice. A tribute to sponsors is set to the tune of 'Gee, Officer Krupke.' Kilts, furs, sequins and magenta hipster glasses alongside black cocktail dresses and tuxes. Where else could it be but the 2012 Helen Hayes Awards? D.C.'s version of the Tony Awards, recognizing outstanding work from the region's 70-some professional theater organizations, took place Monday at the Warner Theatre. Big winners for the night, nicknamed by its patrons as 'drama prom,' included Signature Theatre's boisterous production of 'Hairspray!' as well as Synetic Theater's silent take on 'King Lear.'" WASHINGTON BUSINESS JOURNAL

The Cannes Film Festival announces its main competition jury: "Deliberating with jury president Nanni Moretti will be Palestinian actress and director Hiam Abbass, British director and writer Andrea Arnold, French actress Emmanuelle Devos, German actress Diane Kruger, Scottish actor Ewan McGregor, Haitian director, writer and producer Raoul Peck and US director, writer and producer Alexander Payne. In a first, there will also be a designer on the panel: French couturier Jean Paul Gaultier." DEADLINE

Will Ken Burns's "Central Park Five" face off against Peter Jackson's "West of Memphis" at the next Oscars? "The teenagers wrongfully convicted in the vicious 1989 rape and beating of jogger Tricia Meili — and only released after the actual attacker came forward in 2002 — will be showcased in a forthcoming Ken Burns documentary entitled, appropriately enough, 'The Central Park Five.' And while the film was funded in part by Burns's longtime patrons at PBS, the two-time Oscar nominee and four-time Emmy winner ... is taking the film to Cannes next month with the hope of finding a theatrical distributor: 'We want to do it [theatrically] because the running time makes it manageable, and there's something urgent about it,' he told TV Guide this week." News Nuggets: Critics' Choice TV Awards add six new categories

The Broadcast Television Journalists Association announces new categories for the 2nd Annual Critics' Choice TV Awards. From the press release: "New categories for the 2011/12 season include Best Movie or Mini-Series, Best Actor in a Movie or Mini-Series, Best Actress in a Movie or Mini-Series, Best Guest Performer in a Drama Series, Best Guest Performer in a Comedy Series and Best Animated Series. 'BTJA was launched to enhance access for broadcast journalists covering the television industry as well as honor the best work of the previous season while highlighting the potential standouts for the upcoming season,' said Joey Berlin, acting president of BTJA. 'We were gratified by the industry support for our organization and our inaugural Critics’ Choice Television Awards last year and pleased with how well our members’ choices reflected the vote of the Television Academy.'"

Are midseason series at a disadvantage at the Emmys? "For the Oscars, an early season release for a film is a well-known handicap. Exceptions keep hope alive for all comers, but the most comfortable spot for an Oscar contender by far is a winter release. Even the fall is considered the edge of too soon. As we head into Emmy season, one could argue that the opposite takes place: The later you hit the screen, the worse your awards chances. It's as if Emmy voters need time to digest you before they'll jump on your bandwagon." THE VOTE

"Once," "Follies," and "Clybourne Park" are among Drama League Award nominees: "Broadway newcomer Raven-Symoné ('Sister Act'), Drama League nominee Megan Hilty ('9 to 5,' 'Smash') and Justin Long ('Seminar') announced the nominees for the 78th Annual Drama League Awards April 24 at Sardi's ... First awarded in 1922 and formalized in 1935, The Drama League Awards are the oldest theatrical honors in America. They are the only major theatregoer awards chosen by audience members — specifically, by the thousands of Drama League members nationwide who attend Broadway and Off-Broadway productions." PLAYBILL

The Cannes Film Festival's Critics Week announces its selections: "Opening the event is the world premiere of 'Broken,' British director Rufus Norris's story of a young girl in North London whose life changes after witnessing a violent attack, co-starring Tim Roth and Cillian Murphy ... Founded in 1962 by the French Union of Film Critics, Cannes Critics Week (la Semaine de la Critique) showcases first and second time filmmakers worldwide. Global filmmaking heavyweights including Bernardo Bertolucci, Jean Eustache, Otar Iosseliani, Ken Loach, Wong Kar Wai, Jacques Audiard and Arnaud Desplechin all started at la Semaine." MOVIELINE

"Downton Abbey's" Lord Crowley, "Game of Thrones's" Tywin Lannister among Forbes's list of the richest fictional characters: "Topping this year's list is the familiar wealth-hoarder Smaug, the dragon from 'The Hobbit,' who moved up thanks to Forbes' more accurate analysis of his size; since he sleeps on a mound of treasure, this meant that the fictional mound is also larger, which puts his net worth at $62 billion ... This year's newly rich — is there anything gaudier?! — include Lisbeth Salander, who earned her $2.4 billion through hacking; 'Downton Abbey's' Lord Robert Crawley ($1.1 billion), who made his fortune by being born and getting married; and 'Game of Thrones'' Tywin Lannister, who with $2.1 billion can always afford to pay his debts." VULTURE

"Beasts of the Southern Wild" director Benh Zeitlin will be honored at San Francisco fest: "Sundance got the awards party started early when the film won the Grand Jury prize there, but today the San Francisco Film Society announced "Beasts" and Zeitlin as the recipient of its inaugural Graham Leggat Award at the upcoming San Francisco International Film Festival (the nation's oldest fest). Who else will follow suit with similar kudos? And will the awards goodwill stretch throughout the season? We'll know in a few months." IN CONTENTION
