News Nuggets: Has TV surpassed film as an art form?

Mad Men, How I Met Your Mother, Neil Patrick Harris, Terrence Malick, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen, The Artist, The Gershwins Porgy and Bess, Film, Theater, TV

Has TV surpassed movies in terms of quality? "Movies will never die, not as long as a director like Terrence Malick can make every green blade of grass sway like the first dance of creation, but TV is where the action is, the addictions forged, the dream machine operating on all cylinders. As I write this, the Academy Awards are a few days away, with 'The Artist' the odds-on best-picture winner. Does anyone think 'The Artist' is better than 'Mad Men'?" VANITY FAIR

What do the French really think about "The Artist"? "One of the curious things about 'The Artist' - which with its five Oscars and a host of other awards is now the most decorated piece of cinema in French history - is that in France itself the film has not been a massive success ... Indeed, so lacklustre was the national reaction, that when 'The Artist' started making serious waves around the world in January this year, they re-released it in France (just three months after the first release) in the hope of surfing the sudden popularity. Again, the reaction was hardly euphoric." BBC

Should "The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess" be considered for Best Book of a Musical: "The show itself is a likely nominee as best revival of a musical. But the Tony committee took no action with regard to the musical’s book, which the writers Suzan-Lori Parks and Diedre Murray adapted from the original four-hour opera of 'Porgy and Bess' by George and Ira Gershwin and DuBose Heyward. As a result, the Parks-Murray book is not eligible for a Tony nomination or award, because the committee did not distinguish between the new work and the original text of the 1935 opera." NEW YORK TIMES

Can Neil Patrick Harris give a boost to Tony Award ratings? "Harris has proved a popular choice for the Tonys, but will the 'How I Met Your Mother' actor, who hosted last year's Tonys as well as the 2009 ceremony, be able to reverse the show's declining TV viewership of the last three years? Usually the least-watched of the major entertainment awards shows, the Tonys have struggled with falling TV ratings in recent years. Last year's show drew 6.9 million viewers, down from 7 million in 2010. That figure was down from 7.4 million viewers in 2009." LOS ANGELES TIMES

Jason Alexander will receive an Actors Fund award: "This year, the 'Seinfeld' actor is to receive yet another prize -- the Julie Harris Award for Lifetime Achievement, presented by the Actors Fund. The Actors Fund is a nonprofit charitable group that seeks to provide assistance such as health and social services to entertainment professionals around the country .... The prize is scheduled to be handed out during a gala dinner at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles on June 10, the night of the Tony Awards ceremony. Previous recipients of the award include Hal Holbrook, Brian Stokes Mitchell and Chita Rivera." LOS ANGELES TIMES

Why "Salmon Fishing in the Yemen" is becoming a sleeper hit: "It plays to an audience movie studios tend to ignore. That's the over-50 crowd, whom Hollywood pretends doesn't exist except when it's time to release the annual Liam Neeson action thriller. But over-50s don't just want to see one of their own kicking butt; they also like love stories, sophisticated comedies, foreign films and movies about faith. So 'Salmon Fishing' seems tailor-made for older audiences who might prefer romantic sparks to exploding fireballs." MOVIEFONE

News Nuggets: Neil Patrick Harris returns as host of the Tony Awards

Drake, Justin Bieber, The Bold and the Beautiful, Neil Patrick Harris, The View, Charlize Theron, Film, Music, Theater, TV

"The View" prodcer Bill Geddie will be honored with a Daytime Emmy for Lifetime Achievement. From the press release: "'Bill Geddie is an icon in the television industry,' said Malachy Wienges, Chairman, NATAS. 'When he and Barbara Walters created "The View" 15 years ago, they introduced a new and innovative daytime television talk show format. We at the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences are proud to have Bill receive our 2012 Daytime Lifetime Achievement Award.'"

Daytime community split over whether to broadcast the Daytime Emmys: "'The Doctors,' which debuted in 2008, won a Daytime Emmy in 2010. 'That probably brought a few eyeballs to (our) show,' says exec producer Carla Pennington. 'A lot of soap fans watch the Daytime Emmys, and they are our demographic.' Says Bradley Bell, executive producer and head writer of three-time defending champ in drama 'The Bold and the Beautiful': 'I'd be happy either way. I love that it's been on primetime all these years, but I wouldn't mind losing some of the commercial aspects of the ceremony and bringing it back to celebrating daytime television.'" CHICAGO TRIBUNE

Neil Patrick Harris returns as host of the Tony Awards. From the press release: "Neil Patrick Harris will return as host of the 2012 Antoinette Perry 'Tony' Awards on Sunday, June 10th, live from the Beacon Theatre in New York City. This will be the third time that Harris has hosted the telecast, previously serving as host for both the 63rd Annual Tony Awards in 2009, and the 65th Annual Tony Awards in 2011.   As he did in 2011, Harris will also act as a producer, along with executive producers Ricky Kirshner and Glenn Weiss of White Cherry Entertainment on the 66th Annual Tony Awards."

Some of Canada's biggest stars skipped the Juno Awards: "Unfortunately for Canadians, the Juno music awards failed to measure up to the star-studded Grammys. Award winners Justin Bieber, Drake, and Michael Buble all had prior engagements that kept them from attending their homeland’s award show. Bieber, born in Ontario, was not there to accept the Juno Fan Choice award but the show did air a pre-recorded message from the artist. 'As we all know, I have the best fans in the world…this is for you,' the 'Boyfriend' singer told the audience." CELEBRITY CAFE

Charlize Theron rehearses her Oscar acceptance speech on Funny or Die: "You gotta love Charlize Theron. Not many A-list actresses have a sense of humor to match hers, let alone a sense of how ridiculous fame can be. Check out Theron practicing her Oscar acceptance speech (#2) and her kinky sex tape (which was of course not meant to be seen by anyone!) below (she also addresses the release of these videos and raps on a toilet at FunnyorDie)." THOMPSON ON HOLLYWOOD

The TV Academy has issued a call for entries for interactive media: "The deadline for entries is May 4th ... This year, entries can be submitted to one of two areas of competition: Enhancement to a Television Program or Series, and Original Interactive Television Programming. The 2012 Primetime Emmy Award for Interactive Media will recognize creative excellence in interactive productions that were commercially deployed between June 1st, 2011 and May 31st, 2012." News Nuggets: The best and worst of the ACM Awards, and how many tuned in

Clint Eastwood, Miranda Lambert, Marcia Gay Harden, Jack and Jill, Breaking Dawn Part 1, Four the Record, The Hunger Games, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, Film, Music

By Daniel Montgomery

The best and worst of the ACM Awards: "Best acceptance speech: Usually, when artists claim they’re honored to be in the same category as their fellow nominees, I don’t take them overly seriously. Yeah, of course you’re going to say that. But Miranda Lambert actually backed up what she was saying as she accepted the trophy for Album of the Year for her disc 'Four the Record.' 'I own every album in this category,' she explained before lavishing praise on her competitors’ collections. 'My albums are my babies,' the singer waxed appreciatively." EW.COM

Ratings down for the ACM Awards: "The 47th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards on CBS (3.1/8 in adults 18-49, 13 million total viewers) was down 6% in 18-49 from last year to log its lowest demo rating since 2008. Still, the three-hour broadcast ranked as the highest-rated and most watched program of the night, delivering a nightly victory for CBS." DEADLINE

Did "Jack and Jill" really deserve to sweep all ten Razzie categories? "Was it fair to shower [Adam] Sandler’s glaringly obvious stinker with so many awards, when other nominated movies — perhaps most notably, 'The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1' — were Razzie-worthy in more subtle ways? I mean, did 'Jack and Jill' feature a grown man falling in love with a baby, or talking CGI wolves, or a childbirth scene that reportedly caused some people to have seizures? No, it did not. Which suggests Sandler has something to shoot for next time." WASHINGTON POST

Marcia Gay Harden honored at the Phoenix Film Festival: "Harden is the 2011 recipient of the Phoenix Film Festival's Copper Wing Tribute Award, the festival's most-prestigious honor. 'Marcia Gay Harden is a perfect honoree,' said Jason Carney, the festival's director. 'With her amazing performances in "Pollock," "Mystic River" and so many other films, she was ideal." Harden spoke recently about awards in general, and her career." AZ CENTRAL

Clint Eastwood's "A Star is Born" remake may really be about Kurt Cobain: "It may sound like just another remake until you hear the screenwriter’s take on it ... 'I think I’ve reinvented the Norman Maine character, the lead,' [Will] Fetters said. 'I wanted to do "A Star is Born" because I’m a huge Kurt Cobain fan. That was like my Kennedy assassination when I was a teenager. When he died it was a huge horrible thing. So I approached "A Star is Born," for me the framework was all right, if Kurt Cobain never got to go "Unplugged" and survived and it’s 20 years later and it’s now, and he wanted to try to do that album with that understanding as this grunge icon. That’d be tough to get done if he was past his prime, no longer selling, how does he get that album?'" CRAVE ONLINE

Could "The Hunger Games" be this year's first Best Picture contender? "It’s not a British drama, nor a coming-of-middle-age, nor a political statement — but what it is is an undeniable hit.  $200 million in the first ten days? Standing in the way of any kind of real heat, of course, are those pesky critics.  They are the ones from on high who make the difference between what is acceptable to consider and what isn’t.  Sure, they anointed 'The Deathly Hallows Part 2,' and then the industry didn’t.  But they also anointed 'Avatar' and the industry did.  Jim Cameron was the reason why. The box office was the other reason. Story didn’t matter — but its hugeness did.  It became too big to ignore." AWARDS DAILY

"Jack and Jill," the Adam Sandler gender-bending comedy, won all 10 categories at the Razzie Awards on Sunday. This marks the first time in the 32-year history of these kudos honoring the worst of Hollywood that one movie has swept the board. (See full list of winners here.)

Sandler, who had prevailed with just one of his nine previous Razzie bids (Worst Actor: "Big Daddy," 1999), won both Worst Actor and Worst Actress for playing the two title roles.

Al Pacino, who has an Oscar, two Emmys and two Tonys, can now add a Razzie to his awards collection as he won Worst Supporting Actor for playing a version of himself in this limp laffer.

To win Worst Supporting Actress, cross-dressing David Spade had to overcome fierce competition from "Jack and Jill" co-star Katie Holmes as well as one-time underwear model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley who contended for her film debut in "Transformers: Dark of the Moon."

After two losses, Dennis Dugan won Worst Director for helming both of Sandler's  2011 cinematic gems -- "Jack and Jill" and "Just Go With It." He edged out another three-time contender Michael Bay ("Transformers: Dark of the Moon").

News Nuggets: Blake Shelton and Scotty McCreery anticipate the ACM Awards

Blake Shelton, Scotty McCreery, Leap of Faith, Gore Vidals The Best Man, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, Film, Music, Theater

By Daniel Montgomery
Mar 31 2012 | 08:43 am

Scotty McCreery on the surreal experience of his first ACM Awards: "... he can barely believe this new life of his is really happening and that he's rubbing elbows with the country stars he loves the most. 'I remember just watching the show and wanting to be there,' he said in an interview with the Academy of Country Music. 'I always wanted to just sit there and gaze at the artists and see the people walk onstage. That's still me. I'm still the fan. You better believe when I'm there at the ACMs, I'll be watching everybody's performance, and you'll probably catch me with my jaw on the floor.'" CMT

ACM Awards host and nominee Blake Shelton is "freaking out" about the event: "Shelton joked 'Hillbillies have invaded Las Vegas and we don't know what the hell we're doing and there will be disasters.' And Shelton is one of the ringmasters. He said, 'I'm the most inbred hillbilly one of them all.' Shelton will have legend [Reba] McEntire by his side. This will be McEntire's 14th year hosting the show. This is the second year in a row the dynamic country duo has done the show together. The two do admit to some nerves, and especially Shelton who will be singing in front of some of his music idols. 'It's...days away, and (I'm) already freaking out.'" CBS NEWS

The strange case of the "Harry Potter" Oscars snub: "'I think a lot of us look fairly wryly at the politics of the American Academy (of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences), of which I am a member,' said John Richardson, special effects supervisor on the 'Harry Potter' movies. 'It does beg the question why did "Harry Potter" not get recognized at all for the last "Deathly Hallows" film?" he told Reuters at the press launch of the new Potter studio tour at Leavesden Studios just outside London ... Richardson said one reason why the 'Potter' films failed to land any Oscars may have been the voting system, whereby the Academy's entire active membership can select winners in every category during the final ballot stage." REUTERS

Dolby seeks naming rights to the former Kodak Theater: "Dolby Laboratories Inc., the sound and video pioneer, is in talks to acquire naming rights to the former Kodak Theatre in Hollywood, home to the annual Oscars ceremony, two people with knowledge of the situation said. Dolby, based in San Francisco, is negotiating with building owner CIM Group for long-term naming rights to the 3,332-seat theater at the Hollywood & Highland Center, said the people, who requested anonymity because the talks are private." BUSINESSWEEK

As the Tonys approach, Broadway heats up with new productions: "It’s that gusty time of year again, when the skies open up over Broadway and out of the clouds come the April showers of new productions, all making landfall just under the Tony Awards deadline. The month of April is by far the busiest of the year for Broadway openings: A total of 13 plays and musicals will open, or nearly one new show every other day — representing a third of the 2012-13 season’s new productions. (The deluge starts with a revival of Gore Vidal’s 'The Best Man,' officially opening Sunday, and concludes April 26 with the new musical 'Leap of Faith.')" WASHINGTON POST
