'Out of Africa' (1985): Best Actress

Returning to the Oscars with this epic directed by Sydney Pollack and co-starring Robert Redford, Streep once again played a real life character -- Danish author Karen Blixen. The film, which won seven Oscars including Best Picture, followed Blixen's turbulent life after marrying for convenience and moving to East Africa. Streep won the LA Film Critics award but was edged out at the Oscars by veteran Geraldine Page who finally won an Oscar with her eighth bid for "The Trip to Bountiful."
