Everyone in Salem gathers for Hope’s big party, the opening of the new Horton Town Square.

I thought everyone looked fantastic, and I like the new set.  Things flowed well, and they captured the feel of a real party.  Marlena coming in at the end pretty much makes this the best episode of the year so far!

    Younger Actress
    10/05/2011

Abby refuses to believe Jack’s story about being held hostage and notes his past history of leaving the family.

I wanted to cite her performance last week with Abby and Jack’s first run in but it was far to brief.  This would make an excellent submission for Mansi who is finally getting some material.

    Days of our Lives
    Best Supporting Actress
    Renee Jones – Lexie Carver

Lexie is still upset over EJ’s announcement that he’s running against Abe for mayor.  She rips into EJ for betraying her when she’s always been there for him.

Great stuff from Renee Jones.  There’s really only a couple of big scenes, but they’re pretty decent length and she really brings it.

    Days of our Lives
    Best Supporting Actress
    Suzanne Rogers – Maggie Horton

Maggie and Victor are reveling in making wedding plans, when Hope and Bo give Maggie a letter from Alice telling her that an egg of hers was used to make a baby and she has another biological child.

Suzanne Rogers did a terrific job in this episode, especially in the scene where she reads the letter and then her subsequent reaction.  It was great work.

The lighting for this episode also deserves a shoutout.  They way the took it from late afternoon to evening was really effective.

    One Life to Live
    Best Supporting Actress
Andrea Evans – Tina Clayton Lord Roberts

Tina is letting Clint have it for being “no better than” her when Todd and Viki tell her they’ve been summoned to court for something involving Irene Manning’s will.  They rush off to court, where Tina grandstands to proclaim that her mother’s will should be thrown out.  The judge announces that Irene has left all of her belongings (and hence all of Todd’s belongings) to Tina, who is at first excited and indignant about the reactions of Todd and Viki.  But she ultimately refuses the inheritence, letting Todd have everything and successfully proving to Cord that she won’t abandon him for money.

I didn’t even realize how little sense most of this made until I was typing out this summary (for starters, they received these summonses in the mail, and they just happened to be for right this second; Viki received a summons even though none of any of it had anything to do with her), but I digress.  I just thought this would be a good episode for Evans because it tells a story and while she’s mostly comical, there are so moments of serious emotion.  Plus I feel like she was oozing charm and rootability.  She’s got very little shot at a nomination, but I thought she deserved a shout out.

    Days of our Lives
    Outstanding Younger Actress
    Kate Mansi – Abigail Deveraux

Abigail realizes that even though she’s still really angry with him, she needs to forgive her father.

Kate Mansi does such a great job at capturing Abby’s angst and pain with just the look in her eyes.  She did an excellent job in these scenes.  I guess Mansi and Molly Burnett will be the two younger actress hopefuls for DAYS this year, but I’m really trying to not forget that killer performance Shelley Hennig turned in in January when Nathan found out about all her schemes and she begged him not to leave her.

    James Scott – EJ DiMera
    Outstanding Supporting Actress
    Arianne Zucker – Nicole DiMera
    Outstanding Writing

Nicole shocks EJ by presenting him with divorce papers.  After much pleading, EJ agrees to sign them.  Madison convinces Brady to visit John on the eve of his trial, and both John and Marlena are thrilled to see him.  Carrie and Austin move out of Rafe and Sami’s place into a hotel.  Rafe tries to convince Sami to be supportive of John.

As much as I’m a believer that EJ and Sami belong together, the magic that these two have together is undeniable.  They were both fantastic in these scenes.  The dialogue was great here, too, mostly.  My only quibble is that the writing often talks about how EJ hurt Nicole with never a mention of the fact that Nicole was the one who destroyed their first marriage with that whole baby switch business.  But it didn’t sound like Nicole was blaming EJ so much as just pointing out how they don’t work, so that’s enough for me.  I also enjoyed the writing of the other scenes, and I especially love how Sami and Carrie’s relationship is going.  Carrie talking to Austin about the couples in Salem was great because it was clearly leading up to her asking how the hell Sami got a guy like Rafe.
