Thought it would be fun to start debating which category actors ought to submit in; for me, a LEAD is someone who carries story consistently; leads their own storyline; and is a star on the show. There are borderline actors which we will debate, I’m sure! (I’ve left some names out, so help me with my memory! Certain actors names have escaped me!)
B&B: Lindsey Godfrey, Jacqueline MacInnes Wood, and Karla Mosley
DAYS: Kristian Alfonso, Deidre Hall, Jen Lilley, Kate Mansi, and Arianne Zucker
GH: Finola Hughes, Kelly Monaco, Michelle Stafford, Maura West, and Laura Wright
Y&R: Sharon Case, Jessica Collins, Melissa Claire Egan, Amelia Heinle, Mishael Morgan, and Gina Tognoni
B&B: Katherine Kelly Lang, Alley Mills, Rena Sofer, and Heather Tom
DAYS: Melissa Archer, Molly Burnett, Eileen Davidson, Kassie DePaiva, Judi Evans, Mary Beth Evans, Lauren Koslow, Peggy McCay, and Suzanne Rogers
GH: Vinessa Antoine, Rebecca Budig, Teresa Castillo, Jane Elliot, Genie Francis, Kathleen Gati, Nancy Lee Grahn, Rebecca Herbst, Lynn Herring, Lisa LoCicero, Robin Mattson, Donna Mills, Emme Rylan, Kirsten Storms, (“Valerie”?), and Jacklyn Zeman
Y&R: Lauralee Bell, Tracey E. Bregman, Christel Khalil, “Marisa”, Kelly Sullivan, Melody Thomas Scott and Jess Walton (also: “Abby Newman”)
YOUNGER ACTRESS: (not sure if these are all under 25?)
B&B: Ashleigh Brewer, Reign Edwards and Ashlyn Pearce
DAYS: Camila Banus, Lauren Boles and True O’Brien
GH: Lexi Ainsworth, Kristen Alderson, Haley Pullos, and Brooklyn Rae Sigler (also: “nuKiki”)
Y&R: Camryn Grimes and Hunter King
B&B: Darin Brooks, Scott Clifton, Thorsten Kaye and Jacob Young
DAYS: Shawn Christian, Billy Flynn, Eric Martsolf, Freddie Smith and Guy Wilson

Y&R: Peter Bergman, Eric Braeden, Steve Burton, Justin Hartley, Christian LeBlanc, Bryton McClure, and Kristoff St. John
B&B: Zack Conroy, Don Diamont and John McCook (also: “nuThomas”?)
DAYS: John Aniston, Daniel Cosgrove, Galen Gering, Drake Hogestyn, A Martinez, Joseph Mascolo, Stephen Nichols, James Read, Peter Reckell, Christopher Sean, Paul Telfer, Greg Vaughan and Robert Scott Wilson
GH: Ian Buchanan, “Carlos”, Ryan Carnes, Robert Derringer, William deVry, Rick Hearst, Jonathan Jackson, Ryan Paevey, Parry Shen, Kin Shriner, Jason Thompson, and Dominic Zamprogna
Y&R: Robert Adamson, “Joe Clark”, Doug Davidson, Daniel Goddard, “Harding”, Greg Rikaart, Tristan Rogers, and Ray Wise
DAYS: Casey Moss (also: “Joey Johnson”)
GH: Nicholas Bechtel, Bryan Craig and Tequan Richmond
(blanking out: can only think of these 5?)
I can’t remember the name of the villain who was drugging Eric and Teresa for Kristen? He was great – perhaps he qualifies for Guest Performer? I left out guests, such as Patricia Crowley, Anna Maria Horsford, Obba Babbantunde, and the two great actors who played Young Pat and Young Luke on the 50th anniversary GH episode…
(I’m assuming Ali Sweeney will get Emmy-reel material; just not sure which category she would fall in, but would guess Supporting Actress)…September 22, 2015 at 8:12 am #429743
I think Rebecca Herbst could justifiably be placed in lead this year. While she’s nowhere near as talented as Finola and Stafford, she’s had more consistent story and screentime than those two. And if Tyler Christopher’s a lead for keeping Jason’s identity a secret, than so is she. She has a few strong reels and one killer reel from the Nurses’ Ball.September 22, 2015 at 10:38 am #429744
I’d put Finola in supporting. She hasn’t apart from her first week back been much of a factor since what May?September 23, 2015 at 4:18 pm #429745
Nice lists, Freeman! I agree with a lot of it, but I would consider a few performers differently, especially as I’d try to limit the lead categories to four-ish performers. For DAYS, I’d drop Jen Lilley and Eric Martsolf both down to supporting. Theresa and Brady have felt a good deal less prominent this year than they did last year, and outside of the high drama surrounding Kristen and the baby and getting rid of Melanie, haven’t felt front and center. For B&B, I think of Darin Brooks as supporting. From what I’ve seen, he’s on screen a lot, but the character mostly feels like a cog in the gears of someone else’s storyline. With Y&R, I’d be inclined to drop Mishael Morgan, MTS, Steve Burton, Bryton McClure and Christian LeBlanc down to supporting. For GH, I’d consider Finola Hughes and Michelle Stafford both to be supporting, especially the latter, and would consider putting Rebecca Herbst in the lead category. I also think Roger Howarth and Chad Duell belong in supporting.
I don’t remember the name of the actor who played him, but Kristen’s henchman on DAYS who helped kidnap Theresa, etc. was Clint. He was great at being a lowlife.September 23, 2015 at 4:33 pm #429746
I like your placements, Freeman. It’s funny, though, because you know a lot of the lead actors will submit themselves in supporting and some of the supporting actors will submit themselves in lead.September 24, 2015 at 3:28 pm #429747
I really hope Peggy McCay submits her name in the Supporting Actress category this year – I still wouldn’t nominate her, but the category fraud nominations she has received two of the last 3 years really bugged me – it takes a slot away from a real Lead Actress, and also she may have won instead of Amelia Heinle last year for her stellar reel (not that I think she should have, just that she may have)….
There are some placements that feel borderline but others that don’t. I can see Finola Hughes placing herself in either category. She had success with a nomination last year for Supporting Actress so I think she will likely stay there.
I have no problem placing Michelle Stafford in Lead Actress: she has her own storylines and she and Franco have had way too much screen time imo! (: I don’t even consider that one borderline but I can understand why others would – she submitted in Supporting last year (and if she submitted the induced labor epi it’s inconceivable how she wasn’t nominated; my guess is she didn’t submit the induced labor epi).
Sadly, Jason Thompson is demoted to Supporting – how I wish they would give him something good to do. His solace: he’s likely to win an Emmy for Best Original Song! (:
In thinking about the Guest Performer category, besides the five I have been thinking have strong chances for months on end: Obba Bubbatande and Anna Maria Horsford for Maya’s parents on B&B; and Patricia Crowley and the young actor who played Luke as a teen and the young actress who played young Pat on GH – I am also thinking the actors who played Clint and Kyle on Days deserve to be in the mix. Who else? Any suggestions? (I am assuming they keep the rules the same as last year. Several of last year’s nominees are back on their shows: Donna Mills was on GH, Linda Elena Tovar is (occasionally) playing Rosalie, and Ray Wise is back as Ian Ward….September 24, 2015 at 3:44 pm #429748
^Donna Mills was nominated?September 24, 2015 at 3:49 pm #429749
Dee Wallace is a shoo-in for Guest Performer. At least a nom.September 25, 2015 at 12:22 pm #429750
It’ll be interesting to see if they make any changes to the guest actor category, or if it appears at all. I feel like it was implied that the category was not for recurring performers, but several of last year’s nominees have clearly proven to be just that.
How old is the actor who played Kyle on DAYS? He might be better off shooting for younger actor than a potentially very crowded guest category.
