    simple concept:

What characters got a raw deal either from the writers or powers that be or simply because they were sacraficed for another character?

    OLTL:

Clearly, Marty ended up getting a raw deal.   she was turned psychotic for the sake of allowing a John/Natalie reunion.  It was stupid and hurt the legacy of a core character.

    AMC:

Julia Santos: She was brought back and after one good storyline floated around the canvas with no purpose and then killed off unfairly.

Edmund: Talk about character assination!   They turned a great character, who was moral and upstanding into a selfish villian.   It was hard to watch and destroyed decades worth of character.

    Totally agree w/Marty Saybrooke. Disgusting!

Another one is Nick Fallon on DAYS. Blake Berris was atypical casting for that show b/c he wasn’t a pretty boy who couldn’t act. Such a breath of fresh air, but then after a period of not using him, they went the psycho route.

Actually OLTL could be the king of this thread. One of the things I hate about RC is that he used the psycho card to write out characters he put in a corner. Laziness. Eli, Echo, Schuyler, etc.

B&B is more of actors getting a raw deal than characters. Lesli Kay, Rick Hearst, Sarah Brown, etc.

    GH

    Alexis Davis (since 2002)
    Elizabeth Webber (since 2010)
Lucky Spencer (when Greg Vaughn was in the role)
    Jasper Jacks
Felicia Jones (never understood why they couldn’t find a better way to write her off than suddenly turn her into a deadbeat mom)
    Laura Spencer
Tony Jones (completely destroyed the character by the end of the 90’s before backburnering and killing him off in the 00’s)
    Ric Lansing
Claudia Zacchara (Sarah Brown tried her best but poor thing never had a chance with that writing)
    Everyone named Quartermaine

I would agree with every single one of these, except I think Elizabeth has been getting a raw deal much longer than since 2010. She’s been so poorly written for over a decade now.

Marty Saybrooke does immediately spring to mind on a topic like this.  And I agree with east/west, OLTL can lay claim to quite a few of these, considering how many characters RC either made crazy (in addition to the above, Brody) or killed (Nash, Jared, Evangeline — I know she was already in a coma, but still).  I also thought what they did to Victor Jr. when Todd returned was terrible.  Victor was immediately “killed” and then constantly compared to Todd as being less loving and less rational and more unhinged, even though Victor was living under the burden of the awful things Todd did, like raping Marty.

Also, yes, Nick Fallon on DAYS is a great example.  I’d say Chloe Lane as well.  She started out as a feisty, artsy, incredibly talented and very bright young lady who was a loner struggling to fit in.  She ultimately became an insecure, slutty, dim-witted trouble magnet who allowed herself to be blackmailed into prostitution.

You’re probably right about Liz but I was talking specifically about her affair with Nikolas that started around that time. It was obviously intentionally written to get the audience to turn on her so no one would care when Herbst was fired. I take great satisfaction in the fact that it didn’t work and Herbst is still on the show while Guza, Phelps and Frons all lost their jobs.

How did Erica Kane get a raw deal?  I actually think a lot of characters were sacrificed for her.  But I agree with all the others (actually throughout the whole thread) especially Brooke Logan and Jack Abbott, and would add anyone (except Jason and Carly) who crosses paths with Sonny on GH.

In addition to that, she was pushed aside for Greenlee, Kendall, Zach, Ryan, and (insert 5th party) and those uninteresting stories.

GH: Ric Lansing, Skye Chandler (a whole bunch of paternity changes and retcons that led to absolutely nothing), Scott Baldwin (retconned into being dangerously obsessed with Laura for all those years), Felicia Jones (turned into a deadbeat who hated being a mother), any of the Quartermaines (especially AJ), basically anyone from the past 10 years not named Sonny, Jason, Carly, Dante, or Lulu

Y&R: Sharon Newman (turned into the biggest whore of all time), Jill Abbott, Jack Abbott

OLTL: so agree on Marty- what a waste of a character, Ross Rayburn (turned into a psycho to prop fake Todd and Tea), Kevin Buchanan, Cassie Callison (goes crazy and gets shipped off to parts unknown, and then only allowed to show up once every few years or so), Gabrielle Medina (killed in a toilet stall)

Lindsay Rappaport is one I think off.  Not only did she become #1 suspect anytime a crime was committed, but the one time her murdering somebody was justified (she was trying to save Blair from being raped/assualted again) she gets thrown into jail.    I think ultimately this was an issue of Frons not wanting her on the canvas and/or possibly Carvalati/Valentini not enjoying writing for her, as they clearly had favorite characters.

Nora is another OLTL one, most especially under Dena Heigly; first she was in a coma for 18-months and then she was saddled with one dumb story after another, and managed to be written as a brainless shrew who fell for any guy with a six-pack.   I think the ultimate character assination was nora falling for clint. It made little sense she’d fall for Bo’s brother.

I’ll just say anybody over 40 or not white on AMC, GH or OLTL in the last 10 years. That just about covers all the bases.

I thought of both Ross Rayburn and Lindsay Rappaport, but those don’t really seem as bad.  What happened to Ross sucked, but he was a paid kidnapper years before any of the Todd/Tea/Dani stuff, so it doesn’t really seem like they ruined the character or wrote him in a terribly undeserved way.  I kind of feel the same about Lindsay, who was accused of many things but who also did do some crazy stuff.  But you’re right, she commits one crime that’s actually justifiable and basically a public service, and she gets locked up for it.  I think the scenes with Nora having her arrested bother me most of all, because Nora seemed to be reveling in it so much.

Personally, I always found the Lindsay/Nora feud a bit one-sided, It seemed they always tried to write it as Nora being the wronged party, when in actuality one should have felt bad for Lindsay, stuck in a marriage to a husband that clearly always wanted to be with nora.  It was Nora’s fault that Lindsay’s marriage ended, and Nora basically never showed Lindsay an ounce of humanity for the year’s Lindsay spent trying to get the attention of Sam who was more interested in Nora.

It would have been nice if Nora once and awhile showed Lindsay a bit of compassion and apologized for basically taking Lindsay’s marriage away.  I kind of hate that they even wrote Sam as basically hating Lindsay, when he should have had some compassion for how he treated her and how easily he left her.

I think arianna hernandez got ripped off, i didn’t like lindsay hartley at first, but she did do good with the chracter, and if one of the hernandez’s should’ve disappeared, it should have been rafe, then lucas could come back, be with sami, austin and carrie will remain a hot supercouple…yea rafe should go. arianna got ripped off.
