Just for fun, I was thinking about what new soaps we could get from the best characters and actors of all time. For me, “all-time” is around 1997-2009, which was the period I was really watching soaps on the regular.
I definitely want GH’s Alexis Davis (Nancy Lee Grahn) and OLTL’s Evangeline Williamson (Renee Elise Goldsberry) there to be law partners.
OLTL’s Marcie McBain (Kathy Brier) and PC’s Alison Barrington (Erin Hershey Presley) would also need to be on-hand. Marcie could be teaching college, maybe, which could be helpful for introducing a young set of characters, and Alison could be some kind of on-campus crisis counselor.
Soaps always need schemers, so let’s throw in ATWT’s Henry Coleman (Trent Dawson), OLTL’s David Vickers (Tuc Watkins), and GH’s Carly Benson (Sarah Brown’s version). Who wouldn’t want to see those three as travelling con artists?
Definitely want a solid LGBT contingent: AMC’s Bianca Montgomery (Eden Riegel) and ATWT’s Luke Snyder (Van Hansis) to start.
And don’t want to neglect a nice, diverse canvas. Let’s also include OLTL’s Tea Delgado (Florencia Lozano), Y&R’s Drusilla Winters (Victoria Rowell), AMC’s Angie Hubbard (Debbi Morgan), and DAYS’s Lexie Carver (Renee Jones). Angie and Lexie could have a private medial practice. Drusilla could run a business with Tea as in-house counsel.
Shoot, and I haven’t even cast our elder statesmen. I’d love to have GH’s Edward Quartermaine (John Ingle), Y&R’s Katherine Chancellor (Jeanne Cooper), AMC’s Adam Chandler (David Canary), and OLTL’s Dorian Lord (Robin Strasser) as the big players in the business community.
Okay, so I cheated and picked way more than 10 people. Sue me. 🙂July 4, 2015 at 11:53 am #429522
OOohhhh FUN… I might cheat too. And this won’t make sense in terms of family trees, but whatever.
Any soap for me starts with Eric Braeden as Victor Newman (Y&R) (before they ruined the character, so more or less pre-2010) and Melody Thomas Scott as Nikki Newman (Y&R). We need some powerful businessmen to do battle with Victor, and I would love that to be John Aniston as Victor Kiriakis (DOOL) and Phil Carey as Asa Buchanan (OLTL) (for some comic relief too!). And some kickass business women too: Maeve Kinkaid as Vanessa Chamberlain (GL), Jane Elliot (Tracy, GH) and Elizabeth Hubbard as Lucinda Walsh (ATWT). Hahaha I just realized that this would imply a world where we have Newman Enterprises, ELQ, Worldwide, Buchanan Enterprises, and Titan!
I would love me some Jeanne Cooper as Katherine Chancellor (Y&R), and my two matriarchs would be Helen Wagner as Nancy Hughes (ATWT) and Anna Lee as Lila Quartermaine (GH).
My hospital would be staffed by Tonya Lee Williams as Dr. Olivia Barber (Y&R), Brad Maule as Dr. Tony Jones (GH), Larry Bryggman as Dr. John Dixon (ATWT), Don Hastings as Dr. Bob Hughes would be the Chief of Staff (with Kathryn Hays as his wife Kim), Eva La Rue as Dr. Maria Santos (AMC), Michael O’Leary as Dr. Rick Bauer (GL), and my gossipy nurse would be Shell Kepler as Amy Vining (GH). Hahaha, quite an overstaffed hospital — maybe my soap should be called “General Hospital”!
The police force: James Reynolds as Abe Carver (DOOL) would be the Commissioner, and then Doug Davidson as Paul Williams (Y&R), Ricky Paull Goldin as Gus Aitoro (GL), Finola Hughes (Anna, GH) and Beth Ehlers as Harley Davidson Cooper (GL). Rhonda Ross Kendrick (Toni, AW) and Kamar de los Reyes (Antonio, OLTL) would be the rookies (with some sexual tension!)
Legal eagles: Florencia Lozano (Tea, OLTL), Carolyn Hennesy (Diane, GH), Christian LeBlanc (Michael Baldwin, Y&R — BEFORE this disgusting cancer story that has ruined his character), and that dastardly Hunt Block as Ben Warren (GL).
Stephen Markle (Mel, OLTL) and Matt Ashford (Jack, DOOL) would work for dueling newspapers.
I would love for two of my favorite romantic leading men, Robert Newman (Josh, GL) and Jon Hensley (Holden, ATWT) to be in a perpetual love triangle for a classy romantic leading lady like Jensen Buchanan (Vicky, AW). Lisa Peluso’s Lila (Another World) would be a scheming Southern belle and perennial spoiler in that triangle.
The mayor would of course be Tonja Walker as Alex (OLTL). (Remember she was Mayor, LOL!)
Vixens: Michelle Stafford as Phyllis (Y&R), Eileen Davidson (Kristen, DOOL) and either Wendy Moniz or Gina Tognoni as Dinah (GL).
Villains: Michael Zaslow as Roger Thorpe (GL) and Roger Howarth as Todd Manning (OLTL)
Town Psycho: Cynthia Watros as Annie (GL)
Timothy Stickey’s RJ Gannon (OLTL) would run the local nightspot, Patty Weaver’s Gina (Y&R) would own the fancy restaurant (Gina’s back from the ashes!), and Justin Deas’s Buzz Cooper (GL) would run the local pub.
Tuc Watkins as David Vickers (OLTL) would be the town con artist. I want him mixing it up with Arianne Zucker’s Nicole (DOOL).
The 20s-early 30s crowd would be Christie Clark (Carrie, DOOL), Jennifer Finnigan (Bridget, B&B), Jensen Ackles (Eric, DOOL), Shemar Moore (Malcolm, Y&R) and of course the brilliant Heather Tom as Victoria Newman (Y&R).
I want a classy British lady Fiona Hutchinson as Jenna Bradshaw (GL).
Ian Buchanan as Dr. James Warwick (B&B) would be the town shrink and would round out the British contingent with GH love Finola Hughes and with Fiona Hutchison.
And I want Colleen Zenk (Barbara, ATWT), just because!
Freddie Smith (Sonny, DOOL) and Van Hansis (Luke, ATWT) would be my gay couple.
The teens would be Eden Riegel as Bianca (AMC), Brittany Underwood (Langston, OLTL), Erin Torpey (Jessica, OLT), Alison Sweeney (Sami, DOOL), Jonathan Jackson (Lucky, GH), and David Tom (Billy, Y&R) –why was he so bad playing an adult Billy?
The pre-pubescent crowd would be Camryn Grimes (Cassie, Y&R); and Nicholas Bechtel (Spencer, GH) in a love triangle with Lauren Boles (Ciara, DOOL) and Kristen Alderson (Starr, OLTL).
Town busybody: Liz Keifer as C. Blake Marler (GL).
Oh my God, Robin Strasser’s Dorian Lord (OLTL) of course is there, especially since I already put in Stephen Markle’s Mel (I thought the chemistry between the two of them was AMAZING).
And for good measure, I would throw in some Darlene Conley as Sally Spectra (B&B) as comic relief… with Trent Dawson (Henry, ATWT) as her henchman/sidekick.
Most important… NO MOBSTERS!!!!
WHEW… that was fun!!! Although it also made me see how much I miss my favorite characters from soaps that are gone… 🙁July 6, 2015 at 9:12 am #429523
I guess I am not creative enough for this! I have been thinking about it for days, with no clear ideas. Because I tend to be a linear thinker, I can only picture the actors as they are today, not as they were 20 to 30 years ago.
That said, I would go for a reboot of sorts that blends characters from ATWT and GL. Of course, in order to balance the ages, some new legacy characters might be needed. Really though, there are so many great characters from each show that it would be easier to just develop reboots for each individual show.
I tip my hat to Daniel and soapsarecool for their creativity and sense of fun.July 6, 2015 at 10:56 am #429524
Wow, soapsarecool, I would watch that soap tomorrow. 🙂
You event included some I shamefully overlooked. I definitely want Erin Torpey‘s Jessica Buchanan in the mix on my show. I’d love to see her in a friendly group of heroines with Bianca Montgomery and Alison Barrington. Since all three of them come from some serious money, I could see them starting a business together (but NOT a freakin’ fashion or cosmetics company). Or better yet, they could start a charter school for and hire Marcie McBain as the principal.
You know what, I kinda want to scrap my original idea and just start a show revolving around those four women. They could do a “Revenge”-style soap where they travel around using their unlimited resources to take down corruption among the rich and powerful. That would be amazing. 🙂July 6, 2015 at 6:15 pm #429525
This is an awesome idea for a thread… here are my ideas, off the top of my head:
The series would be set at a Private University in a fictional small town and would focus on the academic, personal and professional lives of the students, faculty/staff of the University and the residents of the town the school is located in.
The main areas of story would focus on the University’s Law School, Medical School and Business Schools. This way, those storylines would easily provide a natrual bridge to the occassional story outside the school setting, at the hospitals, law offices and businesses around town, and provide a natural way to introduce guest characters who inhabit those worlds.
To service these stories, you’d need a strong matriarch to serve as the main protagonist, and I think OLTL’s Victoria Lord (Erika Slezak) would easily fill this void. Viki could serve as the newly appointed Dean of Students at this fictional university where she must learn the politics of the school and find a way to connect the disenfranchised student body with their equally frustrated professors who are tired of budget cuts and changes to the cirruculum that leaves them uninpsired. Viki being her angelic self would attempt to fix the problems at the university through increased budgets, innovative eduational techniques and allowing students a new voice to be heard.
of course, every good protagnoist needs and equally compelling antagonist to serve as their opposite, and in this case, to serve as the main villain in the show. I can think of no other character qualified to do so, than GH’s Katherine Bell (Mary Beth Evans) who will serve as the schools recently appointed President who has only one goal in mind, to milk every last red cent she can out of the University before she can sell it to the highest corporate bidder who will turn it into a profit-making machine; and advance a conservative political agenda.
Among the staff and faculty present at the school will be, Chairman of the Law School, Nora Buchanan (Hillary B. Smith, OLTL), as well as professors in the legal department, Michael Baldwin (Y&R’s Christian Leblanc) and Jessica Griffin (ATWT’s Tamara Tunie). The Chairman of the Medical School will be AMC’s Dr. Angela Hubbard (Debbie Morgan) who has recently been hired, after the previous chairman of the medical school was fired for an affair with a student. Angela, a moral and compassion driven doctor realizes quickly that the students in the University are lacking in an understanding of real-world medicine and the needs of regular folks, as most of the students at the school come from wealth and lead a privileged life. She will struggle to connect with the students and will realize she needs help from doctors with more real-world experience. Thus, she hires Guiding Light’s Rick Bauer (Michael O’Leary), GH’s Patrick Drake (Jason Thompson), DOOL’s Nathan Horton (Mark Hapka) and GH’s Elizabeth Webber (Rebecca Herbst), who has recently finished medical school and is now a board certified physician.
Among the staff of the business school will be, Chairperson Craig Montgomery (Hunt Block, ATWT) who remains as corrupt as ever before, but has been dirt poor for the last several decades after some bad investments. He is currently married to his new bride, a wealthy heiress he hopes to milk for her fortune, unfortunately for him, what he doesn’t realize is that this heiress is not who she claims to be, in fact, she is none other than notorious liar and con-artist Alexandra “Alex” Olanov (OLTL’s Tonja Walker-Davidson). Alex, herself recently broke from yet another failed scheme is attempting to milk Craig out of his preceived fortunes asw well. Alex and Craig don’t partiucarly like each other, but neither one is willing to call off their scam, not yet at least. In order to make their scheme work, each is pretending to be madly in love with the other, and Alex is pretending to be an heiress named Princess Stefania O’Cleary of the Island of Kasbeckworth, a Island and country she invented herself, and bribed a lowly internet geek into giving an online presence so that it would turn up when Craig searched for it. She also was able to bribe a few hackers into helping her establish her fake identity using fake ID’s and bank documents. The one thing that neither Craig or Alex is prepared for is to fall in love, something that the longer they stay together may be undeniable. Everything is going according to Alex’s plan, or so she believes until she runs into none other than former Llanview residents Victoria Lord and Nora Buchanan, who she is certain will expose her ruse. Part of the fun will be watching Alex evade Nora and Viki and tricking Craig.
On the faculty at the business school, working under Craig will be AMC’s Peter “Pete” Cortlandt (Robert Scott Wilson), GH’s Ned Ashton (Wally Kurth), B&B’s Katie Logan Spencer (Heather Tom), B&B’s Bill Spencer (Don Diamont) and Y&R’s Phyliss Summers Abbott (Gina Tognoni). The main storyline at the business school will be the contrast of ethics being taught and demonstrated by the various faculty members; while Pete is attempting to teach his students how to act ethically, as is Ned, Bill and Phyliss prefer to emphasis ruthless business practices and never letting the competition get ahead. Personally, Bill, Katie and Phyliss demonstrate nothing short of immorality as Katie and Bill, both moving out of L.A. to accept teaching jobs at the University are in the midst of a trial seperation, with Katie believing the will reconcile. That changes when Bill meets Phyliss and the two hit it off and become more than friends, starting a passionate affair, and setting the stage for a triangle that will span the history of the series. Oh, the Vice-Chairperson of the Business department, working directly under Craig would be Liza Colby (Marcy Walker, AMC) who has left behind the law to teach business ethics at the University. She is secretly involved in a long-term affair with Craig, despite the fact that she is still married to her most recent husband, businessman Alan Spaulding (Ron Raines) in what is essentially another part of Craig’s big scheme to get rich… Liza and Craig intend to have Liza dig up as much dirt on Alan as she can and then blackmail him into a divorce for as much as she can milk him for. The plan, unbeknownst to Liza is for Craig to then trick Liza somehow into giving up all of her money to him. Of course, Craig doesn’t know that Liza also plans to double cross him and take all the money for herself. It will be one big mess.
Peter’s main storyline aside from teaching will be adjusting to his new life, in a new town, with a new reality, Pete left Pine Valley following the tragic death of his beloved mother, Opal Gardner and the sale of his childhood home, Cortlandt Manner and his fathers company, Cortland Electronics to his fathers archrival, Adam Chandler. In pain from his mothers death, and the end of a romantic relationship with a succession of women, Pete needed a change and moved out of town, took a job teaching business at the unviversity and finally admitted to himself a fact he has hidden for his entire life, he is gay and he is finally ready to embrace this side of himself. Romantically, Pete is ready to date men for the first time, and he has his sights set on one particular man; the striking and seemingly intelligent head of admissions, William “Billy” Douglas (yes, that Billy Douglas from OLTL), who will be recast. (I don’t know who would be cast in this role though).
