I certainly wish her all the best, but man this is sad news for me. Renee Jones is a huge talent, and I absolutely love the character of Lexie. Since RJ wants to retire, I guess it’s more respectful that they are killing that character rather than recasting, but I really hate to lose Lexie from the canvas. I love her complicated position as a DiMera but also one of the virtuous people in town, BFFs with the Bradys and Hortons. It also worries me that, since Lexie is the only black woman in town, there will be an awkward attempt to fill that void. (I’m not saying there shouldn’t be any black women in town, just that if will feel strange if the show conjures up a character that feels like a replacement.) I also really hate to see Stefano lose another child. But this should all make for some great material. It’ll also be interesting to see what they do with Abe, if he’ll just become a sexless authority figure like Roman has or if they’ll try to find him a love interest.
I also can’t believe that Lexie is the longest-running African-American female character on television. Makes sense, I guess.April 2, 2012 at 5:58 pm #422151
If they do eventually give Abe a new love interest, I’d like to see Passions’ Tracey Ross back on-screen or the actress who played Virginia on Sunset Beach.April 2, 2012 at 11:47 pm #422152
Good for Jones and best wishes.April 3, 2012 at 2:26 pm #422153
I’ll echo the same sentiments mentioned aboved. A great loss for the show and the genre, b/c now we have that madness on Y&R as representation of black ppl on Daytime soaps, but she is living by Oprah 2:18 “Live your best life.”April 4, 2012 at 2:51 am #422154
This reminds me, 20 years ago, when the late great Beverlee McKinsey left Guiding Light. That was in August 1992. Only thing she did, for acting, after that was General Hospital, where her Emmy-winning son Scott directs. She did a guest arc, in 1994, for continuation of her health insurance.
Sounds like Days of Our Lives‘ Renee Jones has that kind of feeling where she’s ready for a big change to her life. I don’t know how old she is; but I think she actually goes back to the mid-1980s on Days. (Not sure.) She may have had off-time. (Again, I’m not sure.)
Circumstances like this make me wish very good things for this actress. Sorry she will go. But happy that she seems at peace with her decision. It does take me by surprise. In the U.S., people are overworked; they work too many years of their lives; and, yet, people do go along with a number of things without questioning. So, Renee Jones being so frank … well, that’s something. Surprising.
(By the way: I wish Days of Our Lives would not end her character like this. Especially with what Jones personally experienced. Soaps, over my near-30 years of viewership, have “killed” many a character only to turn around and undo what, in real life, cannot get undone. I would love for Lexie to take the same kind of path as Jones. Have Lexie relocate. Of course, that may seem not feasible given her screen hubby James Reynolds is staying on as Abe.)April 4, 2012 at 7:14 am #422156
As much as I love Renee Jones, I wish they’d recast the role instead. It’s like DAYS doesn’t believe in recasting anymore. I can’t remember the last time they recast a role after an actor quit.
It’s funny that they opted to reconcile Abe and Lexie and then give her the brain tumor rather than letting the rift between them send her out of town. I guess they wanted maximum drama, but it’s certainly a shame to have them write something that there’s no good way to come back from.April 4, 2012 at 7:54 pm #422157
Renee did appear on DAYS in the 1980s but as Nikki Wade. If you read just about any interview with Renee the past few years she has LOVED having little to no story. Renee seemed okay with this exit story even considering her sister.April 9, 2012 at 1:48 pm #422158
I personally am glad Lexie will be going out with a bang, she has made it clear she is done with acting and Lexie is IMO un-recastable, she is far to beloved.
This is a good way to have a strong emotionally charged story as we say goodbye to a character we all love. It will also provide Jones to get one last kick at the acting can and it will provide huge material for Joe Mascolo, James Scott, James Reynolds and Beverly Todd.
