I was thinking Steve and Kayla might get married sometime this month, prompting Stephanie’s visit? Between her parents, baby brother Joey, and cousins Sonny, Abigail, JJ, Shawn, and Ciara, I’m sure she’ll have no trouble finding people to talk to. It’ll be great to see her.
Yesterday’s episode was interesting. I thought they did a good job putting everything together and building the excitement and suspense up until the end of the episode. Of course, enjoying that would be based on caring about this Orwell story, which I do but I think probably a lot of people don’t. At first I was annoyed how this storyline is so male-driven, with the guys pretty purposefully excluding the women whenever they’re discussing this whole three-family war, but I like how in this episode the gender divide feels like it has more of a purpose: all of the men think they know what’s going on and have things under control, while all of the women are working to find ways to avoid the conflict or expose what’s happening. They even excluded Kate (usually in on any DiMera schemes) and JJ (also trying to expose what’s happening) to keep the line firmly drawn. I think this could potentially work as a drama series submission, but I’m going to think on that a little more.
This episode also really furthered the feeling that this show is actually two shows, DAYS Modern and DAYS Classic. This was DAYS Modern, with stories that I think are intended to feel more grounded and a little more progressive, and what was happening touches all of the stories in that part of the show. DAYS Classic is more about the 80s/90s supercouples, adventures, and far-fetched returns from the dead, and all those people’s teenage kids living in an apartment together. Poor Roman can’t seem to get airtime on either show. Once the Prague adventure and this Kiriakis/DiMera/Hernandez war are over, I think the show will feel more integrated.February 6, 2017 at 1:29 pm #1202004334
One things that has always driven me up the wall on soaps is the way that they get characters off the hook for murder by having the murdered character still be alive – aren’t they still guilty of the crime of ATTEMPTED murder?
I loved Sonny and Paul’s scene, the clothes, the chemistry – thought for sure they would KISS!
Was that Joseph Mascolo or some other actor made up to look like him? I wasn’t completely sure…. (not the flashbacks, I am assuming the dream wasn’t a flashback)…
Hope and Hattie’s scene was quite nice today….February 6, 2017 at 3:34 pm #1202004393
When I was watching today, I found myself wondering: are the Prague sets recycled from the Chancellor mansion on Y&R? The hotel rooms are painted the same green-blue color and, like the Chancellor’s mansion during the Billy Abbott makeover era, even the doors and crown molding are painted that color.
A couple of years ago, I complimented Days on writing dignified, age-appropriate stories for their vets. Watching Marlena and Kayla plot to trap Stefano today, I could not help but wonder how the vets feel about the current writing. The stories are much less weighty than they were in 2015. On the other hand, Deidre Hall gets to play dual roles and Mary Beth Evans gets considerably more screen time than she has had in quite a while.
Hope and Hattie’s scenes were very good! And I also liked Julie and Ciara. I love it when they play Julie; I wish it were more frequent. And I am always happy to see Sonny and Paul. I’m glad that they are integrating these characters into the canvas.
Freeman, I think soaps need to put a moratorium on bringing back characters from the dead (sorry if that sounds moderately oxymoronish). Unless there is a huge payoff. For example, bringing back Will Horton would be totally worth it.
EmmyLoser, I enjoyed reading your analysis of Days Classic and Days Modern. However, I do not see any aspect of Days as modern. In particular, soaps have incorporated nonsensical technology storylines since at least back in the 1980s. GH did a couple such stories way back then, and they were generally (I’m such a punster today) not very effective.February 7, 2017 at 9:15 am #1202004839
Yes, Julie was wonderful yesterday, only hampered by a dull Ciara. It is my understanding that Ciara will be recast soon? Looking forward to more Julie on the show!
The show has been enjoyable this week. still getting used to Eric’s new look! Loving the Paul and Sonny scenes! Deidre Hall is slaying it in dual roles as Hattie and Marlena! Mostly, I am enjoying it more because the characters who annoy me haven’t been on much! (;
I am hoping the parade ends in time for Days today.February 7, 2017 at 9:26 am #1202004844
You guys both make great points, of course. And love the punning, LOL.
I think the show had its best shot of getting Hope out of the murder charge with the revelation that Stefano was terminally ill and set Hope up to kill him as a final act of revenge. It wasn’t innocence per se, but it was a strategy that I could believe would hold some water legally and get Hope out of prison. Instead they concocted this bit about Stefano supposedly being alive, which, yes, I should think would still leave Hope on the hook for attempted murder. But soaps always ignore that. Both of the scenes I remember seeing with Stefano in yesterday’s episodes were flashbacks with Joe Mascolo (the one where he comes into Marlena room while she’s asleep and the one where she’s trying to escape and he’s blocking her). It was nice to see some old clips, but they didn’t even bother to give us any dialogue for context in what was happening in them, which was pretty confusing.
And I agree, the show doesn’t seem particularly modern in any aspect. But the part of the show I was calling DAYS “Modern” (I’ll throw in the quotes) at think is at least being written for the present, whereas DAYS Classic mostly wants to exist in the 80s. A story about a supposedly dead Stefano turning up in Europe with our heroes and heroines tracking him there and try to capture him and prove Hope’s non-guilt is the kind of stuff some of the soaps were famous for in the 80s. A few years ago, Marlena was ordering dinners on her iPad and counseling her grandson on his relationship troubles, but that kind of thing seems like a distant memory now. I think the story about the Orwell could seem much more up-to-date and relevant than it does, but they just aren’t writing it that way. If Orwell were an app that could clone or access social media accounts or something like that, it could feel less ridiculous than it does.
I did really enjoy Hope with Hattie (she is a hoot) and Ciara with Julie. It’s good to know Julie has an actual storyline coming up and will probably be getting a little more screen time. I’m also always happy to see Sonny and Paul, and moving Sonny over to DAYS Classic for the week works on two levels. Paul now has a scene partner so he doesn’t get relegated to background work while Rafe, Marlena, Kayla and Steve stand around and discuss things, and Sonny’s not in Salem to have to react to Deimos taking his best friend and the mother of his daughter hostage. If Sonny were at the mansion, I have to think Deimos would be forced to either release Chad and Gabi or lock Sonny in with them.
Also, Marlena and Kayla both looked lovely in their ball attire, especially Kayla, whose outfit is not typical soap wardrobe for this kind of event but looks really great on her. I find it preposterous, though, that Kayla and Steve are still talking about a Valentine’s Day wedding. I guess this story is coming to an end pretty quickly? Valentine’s Day is in a week, and they’ve been in Europe chasing Stefano and not planning a wedding for like a month now.February 7, 2017 at 10:28 am #1202004865
So disappointed that Days is pre-empted today. The parade is running long ): I finally want to watch the show and it’s not on!February 7, 2017 at 12:21 pm #1202004933
That’s so frustrating! But NBC has been putting up episodes on the website and NBC app the same day, if you wanted to watch that way.February 7, 2017 at 4:25 pm #1202005185
So today we had a masquerade ball in Prague. That is definitely classic soap, and it was fun. It helped to advance the search for Stefano, and place Marlena in danger when she wandered away from her friends. It also gave Paul and Sonny a couple of nice scenes.
Although I am not especially invested in the search for Stefano, I can tolerate the story as I understand that the writers are attempting to resolve a messy plot thread from the previous writing team. Hope “killing” Stefano was implausible, at least as it was written. I will be happy when it’s all over, but it makes sense to make good use of the vets to wrap it all up.
Arianne Zucker looked fabulous and her hair style was all that. But on a more substantial note, she turned in yet another strong performance as she argued with Brady over the baby. Her reasons actually made sense because babies really do bond closely with their mothers, a consideration that is ignored in Y&R’s baby-switch stories. I would love to see Nicole and Brady reunite as a couple.
Nice to see John Aniston today. His scenes with Deimos were well-written and well-acted.February 7, 2017 at 4:34 pm #1202005206
Refresh my memory: where can I find today’s episode online? The victory parade for the Patriots ran overtime (forgive the pun) and Days was pre-empted locally today.
As is often the case, I agree with everything robbalto said above!February 8, 2017 at 8:04 am #1202005736
I agree with all of that as well!
I really thought they’d reunite Nicole and Brady or at least have a triangle with two of them and Theresa after Daniel died and Brady got his heart, but they gave Nicole a respectable grieving period and then put her with Deimos. I’ve enjoyed Nicole in the past with most of her love interests — EJ, Eric, Brady, Lucas, even Victor — but Deimos and Daniel have both been missteps. Brady, on the other hand, I think I’ve only really liked with Nicole and Kristen (at least since Eric Martsolf took over the role), as it didn’t take long for me to lose interest in his pairings with Arianna, Madison or Theresa. (Theresa is a great character, but pushing her and Brady together the way it was done just took away from both characters in my opinion.) So I’m all for a Brady/Nicole reunion, or even for Brady to fall for Nicole while she is either oblivious or hesitant to commit, which would be like when she was first married to EJ and he was helping her with everything surrounding losing her baby, etc.
If you go to the NBC website, you can either click on EPISODES to see a display of recently added episodes of shows, which will include the most recent DAYS episode, or click on SHOWS and select Days of our Lives to get to their page, where there are the last 15 episodes there available for viewing.February 8, 2017 at 8:57 am #1202005769
Thanks – I will look for it there! (:February 14, 2017 at 5:06 pm #1202012057
It was bittersweet seeing Joe Mascolo as Stefano again for the final time last week. I hadn’t realized until I saw online earlier in the day that he was making any more appearances at all, and seeing him as the scenes were done, without speaking at all, barely moving, was a little tough, though his presence still had a big impact.
The resolution to the whole storyline about Stefano being alive was interesting, and good I think. I would not have suspected that Steve and Shane cooked up this ruse to get Hope out of prison, and even when they revealed on Friday that the Stefano they’d captured had been Shane in disguise, I didn’t expect that they had faked the entire storyline, from the missing money straight through to planted DNA to prove he was alive in Europe. I like that they wanted to protect Hope from the thought that he actually killed Stefano, and it’s pretty interesting when a soap does a secret that feels like it’s intended to be kept, versus most secrets that are set up for the excitement of their eventual reveal. And the insinuation yesterday that Stefano might really be alive after all was a nice place to leave the Stefano story.
And I guess now that all that’s over, the two largely separate parts of the show will be reintegrated more. Also, I had assumed Greg Vaughan’s return was short term, but he was in a backstage Instagram post Kristian Alfonso did yesterday, so I guess he sticks around for a while, which is great news. I love the idea of him and Jennifer reconnecting soberly.February 15, 2017 at 3:32 pm #1202012880
Rumor Report: Fairman on Soaps is reporting a rumor that Vincent Irizarry’s run at Days is over.
EmmyLoser: “I had assumed Greg Vaughan’s return was short term, but he was in a backstage Instagram post Kristian Alfonso did yesterday, so I guess he sticks around for a while, which is great news. I love the idea of him and Jennifer reconnecting soberly.” I so agree with this, EmmyLoser. I hope he stays on the canvas.
The entire sequence on Tuesday with Anne Milbauer was great. I’m so glad she has remained on the canvas. She seems like the type of actress who would fit in well with Ron C.’s writing style.
Anne: “I thought I’d never earn your trust.”
Jennifer: “Let’s not get carried away.”
This is the kind of humor that I enjoy on daytime serials.February 15, 2017 at 4:47 pm #1202012934
Yes, Anne is so much fun to have around, and I agree that I could see Ron C. really using her on the show.
I read the same rumor about Vincent Irizarry on Soap Digest and then saw it reported on soapcentral.com as pretty much a fact. He’ll apparently air into summer, though I wouldn’t have been terribly disappointed if he’d ended up gone at the end of this Orwell story. VI is great, but the Deimos character has done too much, and is too unwilling to change, to really be rootable. As if the kidnappings and near murders he’s committed haven’t been enough, they also decided to hang Bo’s death on him as well, reason enough to give him the brush off.
I enjoyed Tuesday’s episode, but it was a great example of why it’s kind of silly for the soaps, especially one that films as far in advance as DAYS, to needlessly attach a wedding to Valentine’s Day. Yesterday came and went without so much as a sighting of Kayla or Steve and barely a hint of romance (I guess if you wanted to count Chad and Gabi huddling for warmth in the meat locker, you could?). I’m assuming the show just got off schedule because of a pre-emption at some point, which is understandable, but the repeated mentions of the Valentine’s Day wedding still bugs me. I like when soaps just talk about a wedding as coming up soon and then, a week or so ahead of time, tell us the wedding is ‘tomorrow’ and stage some night-before shenanigans. Maybe I’m asking too much wanting these old-school wedding events that last can define a couple of weeks of episodes and involve as many people as possible.February 15, 2017 at 5:10 pm #1202012946
When Deimos leaves can he take Eduardo with him? Dario too? Please? I sure hope this rumor is true!
I too hope that Greg Vaughan sticks around. I do think he would be a great recast for the role of Adam on Y&R though..
Anne is always a hoot! (;
Personally I found the wedding a big bore today but part of that is my dislike of Steve… nice to see Shelley Hennig again though!
