Soap Opera Digest can confirm that Daytime Emmy winner Charles Keating, best known to daytime fans as Carl Hutchins on ANOTHER WORLD, has passed away at the age of 72. The beloved star also appeared on soaps as AMC’s Damon Lazarre, ATWT’s Niles Mason and PC’s James Richfield. It was in 1996 that he was awarded the Lead Actor Emmy for his AW work. He is survived by wife Mary and two sons. “Charles Keating has passed,” tweeted AW alum Alicia Coppola (ex-Lorna). “I am so very sad. Along w/ @LindaDano, he was my very first acting teacher. The actress I am is because of them.”

Sad news – I got to see him on stage in a production of “Loot” but I will remember him best as the supervillian turned semi-villain Carl Hutchins – he was such a pleasure to watch and he had such tremendous chemistry with Victoria Wyndham as well.

I also remember him menacing Erica Kane and sparring with Lucinda Walsh when he was on those soaps. Sorry to hear of his passing. I know he had been doing stage work, in particular in Minneapolis at the Guthrie Theatre – after AW was cancelled. He will be missed ):

That is sad news.  I loved him as Carl on AW, especially during his “semi-villain” years when Carl and Rachel were together.  He’d have these amazing, beautiful passages that he delivered brilliantly, which I later learned were mostly him going off-script and adding his own touch to the character and the show.
