Not predictions, just plain who do you really want to see win in each category? Here are mine:
Drama Series: DAYS OF OUR LIVES – the most consistent of the four remaining network soaps, I enjoyed the show the most as well!
Lead Actor: JASON THOMPSON, General Hospital – it’s his fifth nomination in a row and I thought his early 2014 work was among his best ever. Scenes with Robin, Emma and Sabrina truly soared!
Lead Actress: ALISON SWEENEY, Days Of Our Lives – one great performance after another, she did amazing work throughout 2014! This a great way of saying goodbye to my favorite character ever on Days – one of the reasons I am so strongly in her corner is that there were many years where I truly disliked Days but I watched because of Sami – loving her shennanigans and her heartbreak, often self-induced. This year she really soared! She deserves to win so so so much!
Supporting Actor: CHAD DUELL, General Hospital – he’s the only one of the nominees who I even like at all. There were much better actors who didn’t make it to the final ballot and some others who didn’t get pre-nominated, but CD had a terrific year and was the most consistent of the four actual nominees. Loved his work when A.J. was shot, his agonized decision about A.J.’s surgery, and of course the reveal that Sonny killed A.J. Really great performances!
Supporting Actress: FINOLA HUGHES, General Hospital or LISA LoCICERO, General Hospital – I vastly prefer the GH ladies to the Y&R women. When they write Anna as intelligent rather than bungling I really enjoy her work. Her scenes with Jordan, Dr. Olbrecht, Robin, some touching scenes with Robin, Duke, and Emma – on the other hand, the show saddles her with ridiculous stories and some unconvincing dialogue at times ): Lisa LoCicero is a true supporting player and plays comedy and drama equally well. She has grown on me, particularly this past year.
Younger Actor: FREDDIE SMITH, Days Of Our Lives – I love love love Sonny Kiriakis! he is tender, kind, loving, mature, faithful, decent – he got to show some wise anger last year. His work in 2015 has been even better and more Emmy-worthy! He was out from Chandler Massey’s formidable shadow in ’14 and I would love for him to win an Emmy!
Younger Actress: CAMILA BANUS, Days Of Our Lives and HALEY PULLOS, General Hospital – Camila matured as an actress before she left the show. They wrote better material for her and she delivered. HP has deserved recognition in the past and she truly delivered in ’14. I do wish she had submitted her BEST work: the Ric’s effects/letter episode – she would have won for that reel hands-down. Wish the BRP somehow would know about those scenes and reward her for it.
Guest Performer: MEREDITH BAXTER, The Young and the Restless and DONNA MILLS, General Hospital – I so want one of these two ladies (or a tie) in this category and NOT Ray Wise! Some of you thought MB overacted but I don’t feel that way at all. I thought she was a breath of fresh air and found her riveting. I loved the contrast between her drunken pal to Nikki and her more dramatic work with Kelly, Ben and (esp.) Victoria. As for Donna Mills, it was insane that she never was nominated for Abby on Knots Landing (but there has always been a huge bias against prime-time soaps at the prime-time Emmys). She was fun to watch and while she was obviously scared in her first few episodes she did relax and got better and better! Glad she’s coming back for another visit this year!
Best Directing Team: DAYS OF OUR LIVES – again, it’s the consistency. The other 3 shows are wildly uneven esp. GH. The Days directing team is smooth and effective always. I dearly would love to see them break though in this category!
Best Writing Team: DAYS OF OUR LIVES – again, consistency! One brilliant writing choice after another! Days was my #1 show for 10 months (January-October) and only slipped in November-December (GH was my #1 for those two months). I hope they submit well and a win here would make up for that ridiculous loss last year to Delia’s death on Y&R ):April 7, 2015 at 6:22 am #428864
General Hospital – Although I agreed with FreemanGriffin above that overall it was simply a wild and unbalanced year for General Hospital, when it comes down the single submission tape, I truly feel they have a plethora of standalone standout episodes to select from. Crypt sex, Hallowedding, Engagemtn Party, Gabriel’s death, etc.
Days of our Lives – Although I hear that the show is pretty bad at the moment, I know that they had great material from last spring-fall, mainly EJ’s death and Sami’s exit.
Bold and the Beautiful – Although I do not watch B&B regularly, I always hear and read that it’s consistently the best-written soap on the air. Brad Bell and Co. have easily won here before in the past couple years.
Days of our Lives – Again, I believe that Tomlin/Whitesell have great material to submit from the past spring and fall, so I think they could pull it off here.
General Hospital – I said this in the new Directing Team thread I created; while watching the released reels, something about GH stuck out at me. GH has some of the most appealing sets and the technical direction is impeccable; from the lighting to the cinematography to the editing. I do not know what goes into judging Directing, but I’m sure some of these aspects are taken into consideration.
Jason Thompson, GH – I don’t think he has the “best” reel, but it’s his 5th nomination, and CJ, Tony, and Billy don’t necessarily need another trophy. I still would have liked to see Tyler Christopher here, because he had a powerhouse performance last spring at the engagement party.
Ali Sweeney, Days – This is truly not only a sentimental favorite, but she an as outstanding submission. It’s a grand 25 minutes of the best work she has ever done.
Chad Duell, GH – Again, he is the only one in this category without a single victory, and it’d be awesome to see him win on his first nod in elevation to supporting! Although sometimes I am not particularly fond of his acting, he had a lot of dark material last year with AJ’s death and Sonny’s acquitting.
Lisa LoCicero, GH – Lisa’s submission is the perfect example of melodramatic soap comedy done well! I’m not sure if she could actually win here, but Amelia Heinle upsetted last year on her first nomination after decades in the daytime…
Elizabeth Hendrickson, Y&R – Liz is a more sentimental favorite of mine, as this is her 3rd nomination in this race and she had some strong work with Greg Rikaart in her final shows.
Bryan Craig, GH – This is mainly because his reel is the most organic, natural, nuanced acting in the category. I like Freddie Smith, but the reel is kind of one-note and his hand gestures trigger over-acting. Bryan should have won last year, I believe, but he was overshadowed by his adult cast members.
Camila Banus, Days – Camila’s tape is the clear best in the category, with Haley Pullos running close behind. However, I don’t expect her to prevail because Hunter King and her struggle acting prevailed here last year and could very well do it again.
Donna Mills, GH – Donna’s reel is the strongest, most sophisticated against over-the-top performances from the Y&R submitters. She is the epitome of this newly-returned category.April 7, 2015 at 7:30 pm #428865
So far, all my top choices for the acting reels have been for GH. That’ll probably change when the lead acting reels are released (Ali Sweeney and LeBlanc will probably be my top choices there unless Jason Thompson blows me away or something)April 7, 2015 at 8:01 pm #428866

GH really has the best acting reels this year. Evenly strong submissions all around.April 8, 2015 at 7:58 am #428867
But this year will be the final leading year for the 22-year Days Of Our Lives veteran and a valedictory Daytime Emmy for sentimental reasons could be on several voters’ agendas. Please don’t overlook Gina Tognoni’s chances for The Young & The Restless.
