Daytime Confidential recently posted a very interesting list of blind items. One in particular caught my eye:
“A major casting blood bath is headed for one soap.”
Which show do you think it is? Here are some of my thoughts.
Days of Our Lives
Why It Could Be Days: They just hired new writers; they are last in the ratings.
Why It May Not Be: Since they write and film so far ahead, a “blood bath” would have little effect in the short term.
Young & the Restess
Why It Could Be Y&R: They also have a new writer, and the show has picked up the intensity level in a big way.
Why It May Not Be: The show just featured several life-threatening disasters, and almost everyone came out alive. Ratings are solid.
Bold & the Beautiful
Why It Could Be B&B: Despite a cushy time slot, there is a big viewer dropoff at 1:30 (est).
Why It May Not Be: The cast is already pretty small. This seems like the least likely option.
Why It Could Be GH: The cast is large and somewhat unwieldy in terms of storytelling. Also, the term “blood bath” seems especially applicable to GH’s excessive focus on violent criminals.
Why It May Not Be: EP Valentini is known for sound fiscal management (from what I have read) so cast size may not be an issue.

Those blind items really caught my attention, too! I always start thinking on who they could be and then try not to get too attached to my mostly baseless theories.
These are sound arguments in all cases. I thought DAYS seemed like a strong contender for the bloodbath based on the new writers coming in and the even more recent EP shuffle (which, btw, Deidre Hall seems excited about, based on a recent Facebook post), but I don’t think of the regular cast as being all that big. GH on the other hand has a sprawling cast of people who appear semi-regularly, even without taking into account the frequent returns and guest spots. I had the same thought about Y&R, that if they were going for a bloodbath, more people would have been offed in all those disasters. I guess we’ll have to wait and see.March 6, 2015 at 6:16 pm #428261
GH does seem to fit the bill pretty perfectly. I’m just afraid of WHO they’d dump and who they’d keep… that could be the scary part.March 6, 2015 at 7:21 pm #428262
I think “blood bath” could refer to a serial killer storyline. That would be great for Days because they always get huge ratings for those storylines. I think they may want to do that to raise the ratings.March 6, 2015 at 7:38 pm #428263
These blind items are terrible. Daytime Confidential doesn’t do blind items well. The whole point of a blind item is to put enough clues in them so you can figure them out. These can be about a thousand different people.March 7, 2015 at 6:36 pm #428264
True, DAYS does love a serial killer storyline, and the audience tends to enjoy them as well. But now, every time I think of them with a serial killer, I think of the Melaswen ending of the 2003/4 storyline and it scares me.
As for the other blind items, yeah, it was very tough to tell who they were talking about, so it ends up being a little frustrating. I was trying to come up with the leading lady who was making noise about not getting a prenom. I was trying to think of who would have submitted in lead and not been prenommed and not had that feel like the norm (which I would say, if they submitted, it would be for people like Kristian Alfonso, Deidre Hall, or MTS, who almost never get prenommed). My first thought was the only person I know submitted and didn’t get prenommed, Kelly Monaco, but then thought it might also apply to Sharon Case o Arianne Zucker.March 8, 2015 at 7:40 am #428265
My problem is they won’t get rid of the right characters and we will lose our favorites and be stuck forever with our least favorites. I personally have a gut feeling it’s GH; glad to hear Valentini does something right in regards to fiscal management! Just get rid of Sonny (GH) and I will be uproariously happy! (:
My biggest worry about the blind item I read about an actress not knowing she’s on her way out is that they really will kill off Ava ): Look, I get that we don’t like the mob stories on GH (most of us) and I don’t either, but if this is the only way I get my Maura West fix, I will have to take it. Of course, Carly was “dying” back in 2007 (on ATWT) and she lived, so I am hoping it’s the same here. I would have preferred her exoneration over all the others, since I need her back in Port Charles ASAP! (:March 8, 2015 at 3:28 pm #428266
True, most shows could stand a little trim, but it is usually fairly questionable who gets cut and who stays. I wouldn’t get too worried about Ava yet. I could see an easy candidate at all four shows, actually, but I don’t see Valentini blindsiding someone like Maura West. Aside from being great at spreading his casting dollar, I think he is also really good with his talent, or at very least the talent that’s highly valuable. This seems more like something JFP would do, having one of her actresses in the dark about the fact that she’s being written out.
