Sick with a summer cold & sore throat – for fun, I thought I’d create my subjective list of leads, borderline lead or support?, and younger categories (I don’t know the ages of some of the performers). Please let me know who I have left out and which category you think – I will explain my choices with contentious choices later!

LEAD ACTRESS: (these are actresses who are stars, are on their show with a great deal of screen time, carry stories or share with a lead actor)

B&B: Katherine Kelly Lang, Kim Matula (younger?), and Heather Tom
DAYS: Melissa Reeves, Alison Sweeney, and Arianne Zucker
GH: Kelly Monaco, Maura West, and Laura Wright
Y&R: Sharon Case, Jessica Collins, Melissa Claire Egan, Amelia Heinle, and Melody Thomas Scott

BORDERLINE (lead or support?): (these are actresses who have much screen time/stories but it isn’t quite clear to me if they are lead or support or younger?)

Y&R: Eileen Davidson (jury is out!), Cady McClain, Gina Tognoni (jury is out!), and Jess Walton

SUPPORTING ACTRESS: (my subjective opinion, these are supporting players)

B&B: Ashleigh Brewer (younger?), Crystal Chappell, Jennifer Gareis, Theodora Greene, Jacqueline Hahn, Lesli Kay (jury is out), Kristolyn Lloyd, Alley Mills, Ashlyn Pearce (younger?), Sandra Vergera, Stephanie Wang, and Jacqueline MacInnes Wood
DAYS: Camila Banus (younger?), Judi Evans, Mary Beth Evans, Peggy McCay, True O’Brien (younger), Allison Paige (younger?), Suzanne Rogers, Susan Seaforth Hayes, and Aloma Wright
GH: Kristen Alderson (younger?), Vinessa Antoine, Leslie Charleson, Sonya Eddy, Kathleen Gati, Carolyn Hennesy, Lynn Herring, Finola Hughes, Ilene Kristen, Lisa LoCicero, Robin Mattson, Donna Mills, Hannah Nordberg (younger), Haley Pullos (younger), Brooke Rae Silzer (younger), Linda Tovar, Kristina Wagner, Bergen Williams, and Jacklyn Zeman

    Next:  actors!

Doesn’t Bradford Anderson have like two episodes on this year? Otherwise I’d say put all of GH’s borderlines in support. I can’t think of a persuasive argument to put any of them in lead whereas the 5 we have in lead (except maybe Geary but it’ll be a cold day in hell before he goes down to support) have all dominated storylines and screentime.

I’d say Galen Gering is borderline at most.  He’s playing second fiddle to a character no one really even cares about.  Kate Mansi’s an interesting case.  Because we don’t know if she’s eligible this year or not, I could see her turning up in any of the three actress races.  She’s got the screentime to justify lead (and certainly had it in the first part of the year when Abigail was pursuing EJ while Sami was largely off-screen), but supporting would seem more likely (and also fine) if she’s aged out of younger actrerss.

I think you did a good job of categorizing them, Freeman. GH is especially difficult because characters appear frequently for bursts of storytelling, and then disappear from the canvas. I would tend to put Finola Hughes in lead, just because of her stature on the show, although her air time and storyline involvement might indicate otherwise.

Did you seriously call her Felicia Wagner?

Also throw Emme Rylan in supporting. You haven’t got her in there at all.

I forgot Blake Berris, who is my front-runner for Supporting Actor!; I forgot Bryan Craig and Emme Rylan – I’ve added them. I put Emme Rylan in “borderline” because Lulu has major storyline action and lots of screen time. I’ve been told Bryan Craig is under 25? Yes, of course, Kristina Wagner! In my own defense I have a serious cold and sore throat and ache all over! (; (Is Wagner still her last name? I think they were divorced. My sister kept her ex-husband’s name after they divorced…)

As for Finola Hughes, I placed her in supporting because she hasn’t had any storylines of her own this year, and instead has been supporting others’ stories (such as Robin, the drug story, Patrick… she and Ian Buchanan are on quite infrequently and without major storyline impact)…. I get that she’s a star but that’s true of Leslie Charleson (Monica) as well and she’s more clearly a Supporting Actress….

It’s amazing to me the high quality of the acting on soaps. There are exceptions, some who I think aren’t very good, but I was surprised – even the two CBS shows that bug me a great deal have some really wonderful actors and actresses!

    Kristina still uses Wagner.

Ashleigh Brewert from B&B was born in 1990 so she would probably submit in younger.

-Michael Leone (Cameron, GH) – birth year unknown
-Kate Mansi (Abigail, DAYS) – MAY NOT BE ELIGIBLE some sources list her birth year as 1987 others 1988.  Her birthday is 9/15

-Freddie Smith (Sonny, DAYS) – turned 26 on 3/19 most likely will move into supporting due to limited options for reels.

We had discussions on category placement in the half way there front runners thread too.

    LEAD ACTOR:

B&B: Darin Brooks, Scott Clifton, Don Diamont, and Thorsten Kaye

While Brooks and Clifton have had lead story material I would be surprised to see them jump into Lead just yet.

DAYS: Shawn Christian, Galen Gering, Eric Martsolf, James Scott, and Greg Vaughan

I atticipate Martsolf and Vaughan to stay in supporting category submission.

GH: Maurice Benard, Michael Easton, Tony Geary, Roger Howarth, and Jason Thompson

    These sound pretty spot on.

Y&R: Peter Bergman, Eric Braeden, Steve Burton, and Joshua Morrow

Burton might move himself up but I could also see him staying in supporting.  Morrow said recently he isn’t into the Emmy thing anymore so I don’t know if he would bother to submit.

    BORDERLINE (lead or support?):
B&B: Sean Kanan (jury is out!)

Kanan would probably submit supporting since he just returned in June.

GH: Tyler Christopher, William DeVry, Chad Duell (26?), Ryan Paevey, and Dominic Zamprogna

Christopher, Duell (aged out of younger last year), Pavey and Zamprogna are all supporting in my book.  deVry could be up in the air but I would anticipate a supporting placement.

Y&R: Matthew Atkinson (younger?), Sean Carrigan, Doug Davidson, Tristan Rogers, Kristoff St. John, and Ray Wise

Atkinson was born in 1985,  Carrigan, Rogers, St. John and Wise would probably all be supporting.  Davidson will probably continue to submit in lead.

    SUPPORTING ACTOR:
B&B: Dick Christie, Andrew Collins, Zack Conroy, Mace Coronel, Adam Gregory, Winsor Harmon, Jon Hensley, Dan Martin, John McCook, Rodney Saulsberry, Aaron D. Spears,  Jacob Young, and Andres Zuno

Mace Coronel is a younger candidate without a doubt, unless Hensley has appeared in the past 2 months he last appeared on B&B sometime in June 2013.  Dan Martin also hasn’t made an appeance yet this year.  I can see McCook submitting lead even though he hasn’t had much story.  Saulsberry and Zuno are non-entries.  Gregory has only made about one appearance but that is all that is takes but I don’t see him submitting this year unless he starts making more appeances.

DAYS: John Aniston, Julian Barnes, Blake Berris, Daniel Cosgrove, Brendan Coughlin, Bryan Datillo, Drake Hogestyn, Joseph Mascolo, Casey Moss (younger), Terrell Ransom, Jr., (younger), James Read, James Reynolds, Kevin Riggin, Freddie Smith, Josh Taylor,   , Guy Wilson (younger? age?), and Robert Scott Wilson (younger? age?)

Barnes is a non-entry, Coughlin is probably a non-entry to though I like him and I wish the show would sign him to a contract.  Moss, Ransom and possibly Riggin are younger entries.  Robert Scott Wilson was born in Nov 1987 so he is too old for younger.

GH: Bradford Anderson, Nicholas Bechtel (younger), Sean Blakemore, Ian Buchanan, Ryan Carnes, Nick Chinlund, Bryan Craig (younger?), Zachary Garred, Blake Gibbons, Rick Hearst, Sean Kanan, Wally Kurth, Jon Lindstrom, Michael Leone (younger), Jeffrey Vincent Parise, Thaao Penghlis, Tequan Richmond (younger), Marc Anthony Samuel, Parry Shen, Kin Shriner, and John J. York

Anderson made two guest appearances so I don’t think he will submit, Bechtel, Craig, Leone, Richmind will submit younger.  Blake Gibbons hasn’t appeared this year and I do believe he was written out as Mac now runs the Floating Rib.

Y&R: Robert Adamson, Max Ehrich (younger), Michael Fairman, Daniel Goddard, Christian LeBlanc, Bryton McClure, Billy Miller,  Shemar Moore (returning), Michael Muhney, Greg Rikaart, Ted Schackleford, Terrell Tilford,  and David Tom, and Redaric Williams

Fairman is making a couple of guest appearances in August that that will be the first we have seen of him this year, I see him as a non-entry.  Ehrich is younger.  I don’t care what kind of story LeBlanc has had on Y&R this year, he isn’t moving down to supporting.  Miller probably won’t submit since especially with winning Lead this year.  Muhney didn’t submit for this year I don’t see him submitting next year either.  Shemar Moore won’t submit for his two day appearance eitehr.

Matula turns 26 in August so she has some reels to submit for younger even then I don’t think she jumps to lead.  Egan should move herself up, maybe she would have better luck in Lead.  I could see Heinle moving up but I can also see her staying in Supporting.

BORDERLINE (lead or support?): (these are actresses who have much screen time/stories but it isn’t quite clear to me if they are lead or support or younger?)

B&B: Linsey Godfrey (younger?), Karla Mosley, and Rena Sofer
DAYS: Kristian Alfonso, Kassie DePaiva, Eileen Davidson (jury is out!), Deidre Hall, Lauren Koslow, Jen Lilley, Kate Mansi (younger?), and Chrishell Stause
GH: Teresa Castillo, Jane Elliot, Nancy Lee Grahn, Rebecca Herbst, Emme Rylan, Michelle Stafford, Kirsten Storms, and Kellie Thibaud
Y&R: Eileen Davidson (jury is out!), Cady McClain, Gina Tognoni (jury is out!), and Jess Walton

Godfrey just turned 26 so she has some wiggle room.  Davidson’s return to DAYS is about 3-4 months.  I don’t see her moving down a category though.  Mansi is a gray area because her birth year is either 1987 or 1988.  All the GH and Y&R actresses you list will probably be Supporting contenders.

SUPPORTING ACTRESS: (my subjective opinion, these are supporting players)

B&B: Ashleigh Brewer (younger?), Crystal Chappell, Jennifer Gareis, Theodora Greene, Jacqueline Hahn, Lesli Kay (jury is out), Kristolyn Lloyd, Alley Mills, Ashlyn Pearce (younger?), Sandra Vergera, Stephanie Wang, and Jacqueline MacInnes Wood
DAYS: Camila Banus (younger?), Judi Evans, Mary Beth Evans, Peggy McCay, True O’Brien (younger), Allison Paige (younger?), Suzanne Rogers, Susan Seaforth Hayes, and Aloma Wright
GH: Kristen Alderson (younger?), Vinessa Antoine, Leslie Charleson, Sonya Eddy, Kathleen Gati, Carolyn Hennesy, Lynn Herring, Finola Hughes, Ilene Kristen, Lisa LoCicero, Robin Mattson, Donna Mills, Hannah Nordberg (younger), Haley Pullos (younger), Brooke Rae Silzer (younger), Linda Tovar, Kristina Wagner, Bergen Williams, and Jacklyn Zeman
Y&R: Catherine Bach, Lauralee Bell, Tracey E. Bregman, Tricia Cast (returning), Angell Conwell, Kelli Goss (younger?), Camryn Grimes, Elizabeth Hendrickson, Hunter King (younger?), Kate Linder, Beth Maitland, Michaela Morgan, Melisa Ordway, and Cynthia Watros

Brewer, Banus, O’Brien, Paige, Alderson, Nordberg, Pearce, Pullos, Silzer, Goss, Grimes, King are all younger.  I don’t think Chappell has appeared yet on B&B this year neither has Lesli Kay, Kay normally pops up at special events or holidays but I don’t see her submitting since she hasn’t in the past few years.  Jacqueline MacInnes Wood hasn’t made an appearance yet either

Non-contenders – Theodore Greece, Jacqueline Hahn, Sandra Vergara, Wang, Tricia Cast is making a brief return

Finola will submit lead regardless of her story or lack there of and she has more story than Laura Wright has had this year.

I’m also wondering if Eileen will submit for Lead or Supporting for Days next year since she’ll only be on it for three months. I’m guessing Supporting for Days and Lead for Y&R.

I must be one of the few who feels a sense of obligation to the heirarchy of a show and who works the most, etc.  It’s not just about one or two episodes for me.  It’s about how well you carried a storyline and how many great potential reels you have from those storylines.  At least, that’s my opinion on how things should work.  I think some actors adhere to that kind of logic (i.e., Scott Clifton not wanting to overshadow TV dad Don Diamont or the show’s patriarch and two-time nominee John McCook), and others do not (i.e., Heather Tom with the audacity to believe she was the lead of B&B over KKL and Flannery!!! Or Peggy McCay’s, what I call greedy, decision to consider herself a “lead” actress on Days of Our Lives).  Perhaps I’m just caught up on the word lead, whereas, alternatively and interestingly, I obviously do not have a problem with actors who clearly carry front burner storylines submitting themselves as supporting.  To me that show’s humility.  When you’ve been around long to consider yourself the “lead” on this show, then go right and submit your name, but until that time, you should respect the veterans and let them have their day.  I can see how that’s going to come off as all wrong to many of you, but it’s just how I feel about category placement.

I get what you’re saying, Pujolsfan, and I do think that should apply to some degree.  But while I agree that Lead is the big leagues, I’m a little uncomfortable with the implication that Supporting is a ‘lesser’ category.  I also think that the Heather Tom example is debatable, because she is a vet and B&B is building around Katie whether we like it or not.  Nor was I upset to see KKL in Supporting the year she got her first nom.

But again, except for those minor points, I agree with your sentiment.
