I just saw this tweeted by Frank Valentini, and I have to say I’m surprised. This seems like great news, even if it’s unclear how long she’ll be staying. http://insidetv.ew.com/2013/01/08/genie-francis-returns-general-hospital/:
It’s the comeback that General Hospital fans have been waiting for: the Emmy-winning Genie Francis, who spent a little over a year on The Young and the Restless, will return to the ABC soap that made her a household name, EW has learned exclusively.
Francis just closed a deal to reprise her role as Laura
Spencer for the drama’s 50th anniversary this year. She’ll report to the
sudser’s Studio City, Calif., set sometime later this month for a Feb.
11 debut, which is actually 50 days before the series’ April 1
It’s unclear how long Francis, a.k.a. Laura, will stick around Port Charles this time.
Speculation about Francis returning to GH fired up as soon as she left Y&R
in November, where she played Genevieve Atkinson since May of 2011.
“Everywhere I was being asked!” Francis tells EW. Turns out executive
producer Frank Valentini was definitely interested in staging a comeback
for Francis, who worked on GH from 1977 to 2008, but they made the decision to wait for the right time.
“I don’t know what the story is,” she says. “I have no idea, but
Frank is very persuasive, energetic, infectious and has a sense of fun, a
positive-ness that makes you want to work for the guy. He assured me
there was going to be nice stuff to play. I am choosing to believe him!”
Francis had only one caveat — that there be an explanation for why she was gone from Port Charles for so long. In the GH
world, Laura has three kids: Lulu and Lucky with Luke Spencer, and
Nikolas with Stavros Cassadine. “It’s not for me to tell them how to run
their show. But my biggest concern was that there had to be a good
reason for me to stay away from my family.”January 8, 2013 at 6:16 pm #423437

Thank god- hopefully this puts an end to Anna and Luke, and they go full on with Duke & Anna and Luke & Laura.
I’m glad she’s back. Celebrating the 50th anniversary without her would be shameful.January 10, 2013 at 7:57 am #423442
Typical. Valentini says in an interview that there are no plans to bring her back and a few months later she is hired. I’ll add it to the list of silly gimmicks of this regime. Personally I have never had any use for Francis (overrated on GH, laughable on Y&R, and in possession of Lesli Kay’s second Emmy), but the returns have been good overall. I just wish it wasn’t happening as part of a lame attempt to mask that the show has not really gained anything of substance since Guza left.
I don’t see any gimmick here. Back when Valentini said there were no plans of bringing Laura back, Francis was still on contract with Y&R. So obviously, her returning to GH wouldn’t even have been possible. Now that Francis is available, they’re bringing her back. No gimmick, just a change in plans based on actor availability.
I for one can’t wait to see Laura back in Port Charles where she belongs. And with this regime’s track record with vets on GH and OLTL, I’m sure they’ll do right by the character and actor. Now I need Jackie Zeman and the newly available Stephen Nichols to be next.
