    SOD is hearing that Kelly Sullivan (Connie/Kate) has been fired. Not really surprising considering that once Connie became one that her purpose went from A story lead to C story supporting character. Shocked that Cartini wouldn’t try to find some way to keep her since they are big fans of her, but I guess this was economics. But if that pic of Michelle Stafford at the GH Emmy party means anything, they are clearing the decks for her to join.

    I am disappointed, obviously, and kind of surprised. Her characters have certainly long worn out their welcome, but KSu seemed really well liked by TPTB (including Maurice).

    This news really caught me by surprise as well. You’d think that over at GH they’d have sense enough to keep an actor so very talented as Sullivan especially after there was quite an uproar over her being snubbed for a Lead Actress nom at this year’s Emmys. I guess this serves to remind us all once again that the casting world in daytime can be cruel and that no one actor is ever really “safe” from being dispensable.

    That’s certainly an interesting theory you have, eastwest (good detective work, I might add!) regarding Michelle Stafford possibly coming on board, though when I read the statement she released last week after taping her final scenes at Y&R, that she’s now eager to embark on her “new life”, I somehow got the feeling this meant she’s planning on leaving daytime entirely to pursue other opportunities. Also, with GH recently adding Maura West to their roster, I doubt they have the budget to hire another big-name star. I also doubt she’d be earning more than she did over at Y&R. Then again, we don’t know if salary was the real issue for her leaving.

    Wouldn’t it be a bit of an ironic twist though if Stafford does decide to join GH and Sullivan were hired at Y&R? I guess only time will tell!

    Along with soaps, they should just trade roles.

    Oh, and let’s have Maurice Benard and Peter Bergman do the same! (What the hell!)

    ^^  Ha Eric Braeden and Maurice Benard yelling at each other in a scene would be hilarious in the worst ways.  Same goes for Peter Bergman packing heat as Sonny.

    I am all for Kelly Sullivan grabbing another Daytime role, but I cannot think of one at this point.  I don’t think Phyllis should be recast (certainly not right away), and I don’t think Sullivan has the right look or acting style anwyay.  Perhaps as Victoria, but I doubt Amelia Heinle is going anywhere at this point and Victoria has not been written well in almost a decade anyway.  

    As for Michelle Stafford on GH, of course I would like to see her on my screen regularly but GH can be so awful that I would rather see her anywhere else.

    I was shocked at this too… BUT, if GH is indeed clearing house, I fully expect the following people would be next to get the heave-ho:

    or at least I’d like these people to be next to go…

    Oh please GDFL, if anything Stafford would be going to a much better-written show.  The entire premise that Phyllis would seduce Kyle to keep him from his sister Summer is downright laughable.  Let me walk you through it.  Phyllis thinks that telling Summer Nick isn’t her dad would be devasting.  The entire premise is that she and Nick are protecting Summer from being hurt.  So it makes no sense to me that Phyllis would then hurt her daughter by sleeping with Kyle or anything of that nature.  It’s silly and ridiculous and I assume this is probably why Stafford is leaving.  It’s obvious that she is not happy with how Josh Griffith has written the show and how JFP is managing things.  I don’t blame her.  This show, to me, is very difficult to watch anymore.  I find myself fast-forwarding through most scenes – – NOTHING MAKES ANY SENSE.

    …but as far as Sullivan’s termination goes, I am somewhat surprised since they wrote so heavily for Kate/Connie last year, but on the other hand, they backburnered Sullivan once the characters were integrated.  She has been second fiddle to Olivia for the last month or so.  Sullivan has a lot of talent.  She was incredible during the entire Connie/Kate storyline, no more so than when Trey did.  When Kate came back and had to be told her son was dead, it was like having to rehash everything months later and yet Sullivan did not phone it in.  She went all the way for that performance and those tears were real.  

    I wish her well and thank her for sharing her talent with us.

    To clarify, I did not mean that Stafford is better off on Y&R than GH, but rather that I don’t think having her on GH is going to be all that excting for that long.  I am loving Maura West’s work, but unfortunatley I am predicting that the character will either be ruined sooner rather than later, or everyone else will be compromised to make Ava work.  We will see I guess.  But I do agree that Y&R is a disaster and I can see why Stafford would want to leave.  I just think that there are opportunities out there better than what GH has become.

    Good lord!  I had no idea that’s what they’d done with Phyllis on Y&R.  How awful.  It’s no wonder Stafford is taking her considerable talents elsewhere.  It would seem like Cartini’s style to get Stafford on board, but I do think that she’d be hard to accommodate, both financially and in terms of balancing having another big talent deserving of frontburner status on the canvas.

    Yes, the news about Kelly Sullivan definitely caught me by surprise.  I knew Kate/Connie had not been frontburner the way she was, but I thought they were going for an Olivia/Sonny/Connie triangle.  I guess not.  Good luck to Sullivan.  It’s getting harder and harder for stars to find other daytime roles, but I guess at least now OLTL and AMC are back in the mix.

    WHOA!!!  There sure isn’t a lot of love here for Y&R, sheesh!!  I can kind of see where everyone’s coming from w/regards to all the fine-tuning that the show definitely needs, but to call it “a disaster” is a bit harsh. I actually felt it had one of its strongest episodes of the entire year just this past week on Tuesday, 6/25; so much so, that IMO they could even submit it for Best Drama Series next year. Everything just clicked for me in this episode: the excellent writing & directing, wonderful music direction, and stellar performances most notably by Billy Miller, Amelia Heinle, Jessica Collins and Sharon Case (all perfect possible Emmy submissions).
    I think the show as a whole has the ability, as it’s already proven countless times, to reach heights of sheer brilliance, only then to completely lose all its momentum to the point where the viewer is just not that interested anymore. So it makes sense to me how that end-effect could leave many a viewer a bit frustrated w/the overall direction of the show, or perhaps even bored.
    I always feel like when watching Y&R, all the great elements are there. What the show needs to do now is figure out a way to bring all those elements together so that they work in sync with each other in the best possible way, to capture and sustain the viewer’s interest. If the show tackles this challenge head-on, and finds a creative solution, then I know for certain that Y&R can once again be the absolutely stellar show it has the potential of being.

    I appreciate that you are defending Y&R, but you are also assuming that things will go as they have in the past under the leadership of the Bell family.  I know many had issues with MAB, and I am one of them.  I hated the implausible writing.  But JG has been no different – he has just done it with his own storylines as they washed most of hers away.  What baffles me is that JFP seems to have been brought in to capture the youth audience.  Why?  She never accomplished this on any of her other shows.  Also, she and JG broke soap rule #1 – they introduced too many new characters and dismissed several of the old ones and backburnered many of the rest that they didn’t recast.  Turn on Y&R and you will see a lot of new faces and you see more of people who were not the focus on the previous regime like Avery and Leslie.  Victor and Nikki are being pushed out and I hope that everyone here recognizes that.  It will not be long before Paul is pushed out and then Michael and Lauren.  Again, I believe this was either Sony’s directive or JFP’s push in order to get the job by promising to pull in younger viewers.  

    Sharon has no storyline.  She is in limbo.  Nikki has a movie-of-the-week illness and yet we see her once every other week.  Adam has no real storyline – everything moves slower than a snail.  The Marcus Wheeler/Leslie’s mother storyline was a complete headache.  Everyone seemed to know that Marcus and Belinda were having an affair, but he was NEVER a suspect in her murder.  The guy he hired to shoot Victor and blow up the ranch pretended to be a waiter and then waited until someone said “you look familair” before pulling out a gun, meanwhile he had planted a bomb in the basement.  It was silly storytelling.  I can’t help but look at the creativity being put into a lot of the primetime and cable serialized-shows and have to wonder – why aren’t daytime soaps hiring these writers?  

    What does it say that the show’s most prominent couple is Dylan and Chelsea?  Two characters who have been on the show for a combined total of less than two years.  Why recast Kyle from the hunky boy-nextdoor Blake Hood to the Breck Girl?  I just don’t get some of these decisions and they certainly are not appealing to me.  I have started watching more Days of Our Lives lately because at least they seem to be going somewhere and the drama is on every day and not just once every three months with the culmination of a storyine that made little sense.

    And it happened yesterday.  Of course Carly would lose the battle against Franco and Ava.  Because Cartini creations rule all.  And most fans will thank them for it because they love Maura West.  And while I did love they eye acting between Laura Wright and Maura West (so glad to see Wright hold her own in those scenes), why couldn’t this be a more equal matchup bewteen the characters?  One of the best things about Days is that every character is respected for what they bring to the canvas.  The propping of one over the other is so minimal, and it makes a major difference for the better.

    ^^^ Those are all excellent observations, gdfl, and you’re absolutely right. It’s that respect for every character what I also appreciate so much about DAYS, and is what puts the show way ahead of the pack. For example, I really like the fact that we’re seeing much more of Justin and Adrienne (Wally Kurth and Judi Evans) at the moment, which makes so much sense (and was a smart move by the writers to integrate them prominently here) given that these characters directly tie in w/all the major storylines right now. All the while, it never feels like their screentime takes away much from that of the other characters. That’s because DAYS is consistent in giving everyone, whether in a major or minor role, an equal chance to shine on the canvas throughout the year, and without it being at the expense of another character such as we’re seeing now with Ava vs. Carly on GH and the veteran performers on Y&R like MTS being seemingly pushed out by precious screentime alloted unwisely to all the newbies, as Pujolsfan wisely pointed out.
