This thought came to mind to me today. These actors, some of them with decades of experience, are suddenly unemployed. When you’ve starred on a soap for decades, like Erika Slezak, it’s probably challenging to get audiences — or, really, casting directors are the main problem — to see you as anyone else, and it might be hard for them to find work elsewhere.

But if you had your druthers, what new primetime TV role would you give some of daytime’s latest castaways? Think big!

For instance, I would love to see Erika Slezak play a gouche, new-money American who trades insults with Maggie Smith on “Downton Abbey.”

I’d like to see some favorites land co-lead roles, starring opposite big names, in brand-new TV series. Reminds me of my first year regularly watching the soaps, in 1984, when Phylicia Ayers–Allen left ABC’s One Life to Live—working with Al Freeman Jr. and Ellen Holly—because she was cast to play Bill Cosby’s wife in his brand-new NBC sitcom The Cosby Show. (Oh, and it was one to two years later she became Phylicia Rashad.)

For the pretty people, I can see Alicia Minshew on a procedural style show. Something on a TNT or USA. Josh Kelly could land anywhere. He has the package to be a big movie star.

As for the seasoned pro’s, I would’ve loved to see LaLucci play against type in something. And if “Law & Order: SVU” was still a quality show, I would’ve love to see Erika Slezak to do a juicy guest spot. W/the men, I can see them, Jerry, David, & RSW, on something like “The Good Wife”.

This thread makes me sad lol.

I don’t know if she was still on OLTL by the time the show ended, but Gina Tognoni would make a great ADA on a “Law & Order” series, though unfortunately the only one that’s left is “SVU” and she deserves better than what that show has become.

I think I read that Bree WIlliamson has been cast on some show on the Syfy network, but anyway, here are my thoughts:

—I think that Robin Strasser would be a perfect fit on a show like “Mad Men” where she could wear an era-specific costume and play a bitchy housewife with a grudge against Betty, or even a business savvy mentor for Peggy…

—–I’d love to see Erika Slezak on a show like “NCIS” as a love interest for Mark Harmon, who marries his character and starts becoming a mother-like figure to the other agents on his team.

——Rebecca Budig would be perfect on a Lifetime show like Army Wives, if she could find a way to strip her vanity away and become more real.

—–I could see Susan Haskell on Law & Order: SVU as a new ADA who has a fragile mental state because of past issues.

—–Cameron Mathison could really do well on a TNT series like “Franklin & Bash” as a recurring character perhaps related to Reed Diamonds character.

—–I’d love to see Gina Tognoni on a CSI type show, I could see her on “CSI: NY” as a new female agent.

——Jerry Ver Dorn and Robert S. Woods should go on TNT’s “Dallas” remake as distant Ewing relatives… or maybe even as a member of the Barnes family.

—-Susan Lucci is already going to take primetime by storm, her new Marc Cherry series “Devious Maids” has been picked-up by Lifetime!!!! It debuts in March.

——I could see Jacob Young on “SMASH” as a TV star attempting to make it to Broadway and has to overcome his poor reputation.

Michael E. Knight has a comedic flair so a sitcom or Dramedy would be very doable.

Darnell Williams and Debbi Morgan could move their legendary characters Jesse and Angie to a Tyler Perry production in primetime and the show could be called The Hubbards similar to House of Payne.  The characters of Frankie, Cassandra, and Natalia would be cast and add grandchildren to the mix.  A great show with emphasis on success with Debbi being the doctor and Darnell being the Police Chief.

Any crime show/police show Darnell would fit very nicely in the cast.  After all he does have experience.  A Michael E. Knight and Darnell Williams sitcom or Dramedy would work.  They play off of each other very nicely.

Debbi Morgan is great in Primetime since she has done that in the past.  Time to play grown up and more mature roles as a young grandmother or parent of a teen.

Ricky Paull Goldin and Vincent Irizarry need a show ASAP.

Christal Stause and Ricky Paull Goldin have amazing chemistry so they could be a great addition to any cast on any show.

I think that Debbi Morgan is a talented, excellent actress and frankly deserves better than a Tyler Perry series.  Perry clearly has no skill in writing complex, layered female roles; everything is all one-note and over the top.

I think Morgan would be a perfect choice for a ABC Family type series as the wise mother or grandmother to a troubled teen.   I could see her fitting in well on “Secret life of the American Teenager” as the grandmother to a teen in trouble.    Or maybe even as a guidance counselor.

LOVE the suggestion of Jamie Luner on DALLAS, that makes a lot of sense.   She has a long past as a scheming vixen on nighttime soaps and that would be a natural fit.   I could totally see her as the manager of Sue Ellen’s campaing who uses every backstabbing, conniving method to get her way, and perhaps even double crosses Sue Ellen a few times.     Maybe she could get involved with John Ross in a May/December type of thing and cause all kinds of havoc.   Since we all know something strange is happening with Christopher’s new wife, I think eventually they’ll need to introduce her mother and Jamie Luner would be a natural for that role.

I think that Kassie DePavia would also fit in well on DALLAS, hell, so would James DePavia.

Personally I’d love to see Gina Tognoni from OLTL guest-star on “Castle” as a new love interest for Nathan Fillion’s character.  That would be such a great play on their past.

My favorite above suggestion is Robin Strasser on “Mad Men.” I feel like she should play the domineering mother of a female character on that show — I wonder what makes me think she could play that.

Erika Slezak in a reboot of Murder She Wrote.

Robin Strasser would be fire in a primetime soap. I hear they’re casting Victoria’s mother on Revenge. I’d love to see Strasser sink her teeth into that role. (Technically there’s only a 14 year age difference between Strasser and Madeleine Stowe but I think it’ll work. Stowe looks much younger than she is.)

Young actors like Jake Silbermann, Van Hansis, John Paul Lavoisier & Josh Kelly have all gotten some primetime guest spots recently. I’d love to see them get cast on a Friends/HIMYM/Happy Endings style pilot that becomes a breakout hit.

Jordi Vilasuso is gorgeous and needs to be on pay cable where we can see some skin.

GREAT suggestions!  So many good ideas!  Robin Strasser as Victoria’s
mother on Revenge would be so awesome.  Kassie DePaiva, Jerry verDorn,
and Bob Woods on Dallas is also a fantastic idea.  Also love the thought
of Maura West and Jordi Vilasuso on Damages.  Maura would have played
that role Marcia Gay Harden had a couple of season ago brilliantly.
(Not that Harden did a bad job.)

I also like the suggestion for The Hubbards.  I think I said this
before, but it seems silly to just abandon these franchises with decades
of history and so many rich characters.  If I were ABC (I think this
would be tougher with ATWT and GL because of ownership issues), I would
be thinking about how to create primetime shows from the cancelled
soaps.  Because I love Rebecca Budig, my first task would be coming up
with an idea for Greenlee.  I’d take her and another female character,
maybe Cara (that’s Lindsay Hartley’s character’s name, right?) and move
them into a city as roommates, one of whom is great at work but a mess
at home, the other of whom is the exact opposite.  OR, why didn’t I
think this right off?, Greenlee with Sarah Michelle Gellar back as
Kendall, doing basically anything.  They somehow inherit a company
together, or both witness a crime and have to go into witness
protection, or discover a new cleaning-burning fuel for home heating, or
    really anything.  I’d watch it.

OLTL would be a little harder because GH is now privy to whatever
characters it wants.  Maybe Jessica decides that the only way to
maintain her sanity is to leave Llanview with her kids.  She moves to
another town or city and, by chance, runs into a newly-single Fish with
his baby.  They decide that even in an awkward situation, two parents
would be better than one and opt to be roommates raising their babies
together.  Then, once GH breaks up John and Natalie (I don’t want it to
happen, but it sure seems like it’s going to), Natalie moves in as a
neighbor?  I don’t know.  I’m just rattling off ideas.

I’m trying to think of what soapy primetime shows could use a little dayime drama infusion.

Debbi Morgan deserved an Oscar nomination for “Eve’s Bayou” back in 1997 (see it now if you haven’t already), which was kind of a Southern gothic story that would probably well make her well-suited to the Bon Temps community on “True Blood.”

That’s just my nice way of saying that Budig doesn’t always come across as a natural performer and it would appear that she probably has played the same character for too long.      I’m not sure she’d be able to create a new character who is relateable.
