Not surprised by this – I wonder if E.J. and Sami will ride off into the sunset together?

Days really needs to bring in some strong new actors with ties to the show’s rich history pronto.

^^I would love to get Martha Madison back, and bringing Shawn D back would help fill the void that’s being created here.

Yeah, I guess this isn’t shocking since James Scott almost left the show during that previous round of contract negotiations a year or two ago, but goodness does it make me sad.  I’m worried for what the DAYS landscape is going to look like in the near future.  Even if the show can plug the holes story-wise, and I am sure they can with the team they have, it’ll be really hard to replace the wattage brought by Scott and Alison Sweeney.

Do we know that they won’t try to recast?  It might be worth trying, but I don’t know how well they would do.  What soap guys are out there and available in the 30 – 40 age range?

And of course, I won’t miss another opportunity to mention that bringing back Carrie and Christie Clark can only help.  They could bring her and Austin back in, and feel free to recast Austin if they need to to get a certain vibe.  There are bunches of guys still out there who they could bring back or bring in in some form or another: Phillip, Nathan, Chad (rumored to be returning), Sonny’s three brothers, Theresa’s brother, Brandon, some Horton men.  Lots of options.

The only problem is none of the above-mentioned characters are as rich and multidimensional as EJ and I can’t think of an actor that brings more to the table than Scott.

I knew this would come up!  And, as always, I agree.

They need to bring back characters from the past – either played by the original actors (if possible) or with strong recasts. This is going to be a challenge. The show hasn’t been as good as it was last year – the absence of Kristen has been a problem – we’ll see how her return goes and how long it lasts too.

I really like Brandon Beemer and hope he returns to the show. Jason Cook as well… Is Scott De Freitas (Mr. Maura West) still an actor? I would love to see him return to daytime! Matt Crane (Matthew Cory, Another World) would be in his mid-40’s and is a fantastic actor; his wife, Robin Christopher (Another World and General H ospital veteran) is a terrific actress. Jensen Buchanan is someone I would like to see on daytime again… Ricky Paull Goldin – in other words, experienced soap actors with charisma and acting abilities, please!

FIRST, why can’t this news be that Shawn Christian is leaving instead?  Just asking.

While I’ve always applauded what James Scott brings to the role, I’m not sad to see E.J. go.  I think it’s time Days moved on from the DiMera family.  They become one-note villains after awhile.  Certainly, I can see that this is a huge loss and I was surprised by the announcement, but I think Days has a wealth of history they can build around with new leading men.  I doubt they will bring Shawn and Belle back, at least not Shawn, because then they have to remind viewers that Hope is a grandmother.  They have a strong foundation with Jennifer and her little family.  Perhaps it’s time to resurrect Peter Blake.  He is, after all, Kristen’s biological brother and former alley.  I know I said the DiMera clan should be written off, but Peter’s not really a DiMera and I can buy due to his connection to Kristen, whom the show desperately needs on a full time basis.

There’s also a tremendous amount they can do with Greg Vaughn and Eric Martsolf.  Casey Moss has the potential to be a real teen heartthrob as J.J.  Nick has grown into a formidable baddie.  Daniel Cosgrove is being sorely wasted.  Galen Gering is agre at lead.  I think it’s the loss of Sweeney that will have more of an impact.  They’re really going to have to propel Nicole, use Marlena more, up the ante for Hope and bring back Bo or kill him off.  Jennifer’s a Horton and legend character, and while I hate her romance with Dr. Disgusting, they could always put her with someone else effectively (Justin, anyone?).  It will be interesting to see how much they use Kassi DePaiva as Eve.  Hopefully, they’ve planned this out and she can fill the Jennifer void.  It would be perfect to re-establish Eve’s rivalry with Jennifer and then have them fight over a man who isn’t Dr. Disgusting.  And isn’t it time they gave Anne Milbauer more to do?  I could take less of Will and Sonny and more of Anne any day.

I disagree on DiMera comment.  The actor who plays Stephano is 85 years old he is clearly not working as much and without James the only DiMera person will be Kristen.  i cant imagine Days without that vital family

Loosing James is huge blow but of course the Ejami heart I have is hopeful him and Sami get a very happy ending.

Loosing James and Ali is huge blow I dont envision myself wathching after they leave ( I only care about Kristen)

I agree with that, but characters can certainly become more multidimensional, and that’s a great thing to watch, especially when it’s deliberate.  A lot of EJ being as complex as he is came from the character being a mess from the changing writing regimes of the first few years he was on the show.  That gave him really heart and passion while also giving him ruthlessless and bite.  Scott was able to make those shifts work, and the last couple of writing teams have pulled it together beautifully for the character.

I don’t at all agree that the DiMeras need to go.  The family is far from one-note, and I still haven’t gotten tired of the watching the cycle with them and seeing with transgressions are things they’ve done of their own selfish or vicious motives versus things they’ve done because of the bullying and accusations of the people in town.  Sure, Stefano has become a little tired because he’ll do anything and you can’t put anything past him.  The character has no limits, so he’s an easy scapegoat for the writers and the characters.  But Stefano is rarely around, and the other characters in the family are so different, with their own set of skewed morals, soft spots and triggers.  Look at the variations in Kristen, EJ and Chad.  I’d hate to see the family go away, but if EJ is gone and Kristen doesn’t stick around, they may end up doing just that.

The DiMeras are used as the scapegoat for nearly everything and it gets old.  As someone who doesn’t watch Days religiously, I would probably tune in more if they stopped with the Brady/DiMera feuding and breathed some new life into the show by establishing non-DiMera villains like Nick and potentially Eve.
