Eileen Davidson as Kristen DiMera (DAYS)

I didn’t like this reel very much the first time I saw it. But watching it again, I see there is some really good stuff here. The reel definitely has range: desperation at the beginning, hateful and vengeful with Marlena, vulnerable in the middle and then defiant again at the end. It’s a great performance. If anyone’s gonna stop Emmy-magnet Tom, it’ll be Davidson. She cut out the Hope scene at the end; that was very smart. That short scene added nothing and left me confused. The only drawback is that there is still a lot of exposition.

Katherine Kelly Lang as Brooke Logan (B&B)

I’m happy for her and her fans that she got her 2nd consecutive Emmy nomination and 1st in lead. And she has some good moments after Bill tells her he’s going back to her sister that justify her being included in this group.  But this performance just doesn’t compare with the other 3 nominees. She’s clearly in last place.

Heather Tom as Katie Logan (B&B)

I think Heather Tom submitted only 7/3. That was a good choice. All of her strongest scenes were in that ep. Really fiery, baity performance. Phenomenal reel. The only drawback I see is that if Tom wins, she’ll break the record of most consecutive lead actress
wins and tie Erika Slezak’s record of most Emmy wins for an actress
(although Tom’s aren’t all in lead like Slezak’s). If Emmy voters are
aware of that, then I could see
them deciding to give Tom a break this year and looking elsewhere.

Arianne Zucker as Nicole Walker (DAYS)

Really good job at playing Nicole’s vulnerability. She really made me feel for and sympathize with her character. A very sincere, emotional performance.

    Ranking:
    1. Tom
    2. Davidson
    3. Zucker
    4. Lang

Good category. All 4 reels are strong. I wouldn’t be upset with any of these 4 ladies winning. As much as I’d love to see a first time winner, I think Tom’s undeniable. She clearly has the best reel by a mile. But the DAYS ladies are giving her much stronger competition than she’s had in the last few years.

I disagree completely – Eileen and Ari’s reels are much better than HT’s. I would be VERY upset if a Days actress doesn’t win.

    1. EILEEN DAVIDSON, Days Of Our Lives – her Kristen DiMera was magical – she had chemistry with everyone, which was pretty much everyone on the show, and she delivered. Her Emmy reel has everything – I remember when I watched those scenes last May thinking she will win her first Emmy (:

    2. ARIANNE ZUCKER, Days Of Our Lives – I love her reel; yes, she had better potential reels but was is there is cherce! (; Again, she has terrific range and really delivered in 2013.

    3. HEATHER TOM, The Bold and the Beautiful – disappointed she’s nominated, and her reel is marred by how much I dislike her character and this actress. She rubs me the wrong way, there’s no denying it. Yes, she delivers good Emmy reel performances, but the panel will hopefully reward a Days actress with the statuette.

    4. KATHERINE KELLY LANG, The Bold and the Beautiful – if they are going to break my heart and give it to a B&B actress, I would prefer KKL, as a career award ): But I really must insist: Days actress, please! (; Her reel is solid, but quite a few of the other pre-nominees were more deserving of recognition.

I honestly believe that Eileen Davidson will win the Emmy next month (:

Without a doubt, Davidson wins the reel race for me.  The range displayed in her reel was phenominal and IMO firmly outshines the other 3 actresses in their reels.

Heather Tom’s reel is by FAR the most baity reel (due to all the screaming) but this is essentially the same damn reel I have seen from her now 3-4 years running.  I feel no emotional connection to it and I don’t find myself feeling sorry for Katie at all. Her reel lacks serious range, its just yelling and crying and throwing stuff and IMO if they are going to give Heather Tom a 3rd CONSECUTIVE Lead Actress Emmy, she needs to show a hell of a lot more range than this reel.  Zucker’s reel is very strong and effective, but it is not enough to win.

    My rankings based on that:

    1.) Davidson
    2.) Zucker
    3.) Tom
    4.) Lang

Bill Spencer’s kind of a dick, isn’t he? Blaming Katie for his affair with her sister in one reel, then breaking up with the sister in the next (on a plane, no less, where they’re then stuck with each other for a while).

Anyway, I think Heather Tom has this again. Arianne Zucker is good, but I don’t think her reel is enough. Katherine Kelly Lang has a lot of screentime (including some goodd stuff on Tom’s reel), but she doesn’t have the impact. I loved Eileen Davidson‘s reel; it was a breath of fresh air to see a villainess performance after so many wronged, weeping women, but it’s kinda short, while Tom throws down yet again with epic fury for 11 minutes. Towards the end the focus shifts to Lang, but Tom doesn’t fade into the background. She gets to show off some range (the part of her that still wants to forgive her big sister). After winning three years in a row, I think somebody’s gonna have to pry that Emmy out of Tom’s hands. You’ve got to beat her, because she doesn’t slip up with her submissions, and it seems like she’s always able to supply a whopper of an episode.

I don’t think it’s a lock (Davidson has real spoiler potential), but this and Younger Actress (for Hunter King) are the only categories where I feel confident in picking a frontrunner.

    1. Heather Tom
    2. Eileen Davidson
    3. Katherine Kelly Lang
    4. Arianne Zucker

Have to agree with Daniel and OLTL, this is Tom’s category and the one I would bet the most points on in my predictions. I don’t care if Heather has 100 Emmys, the judging should be done on what is on the reel they submitted and IMHO, Tom’s is by far the best, tho if I had to choose a spoiler it would be Zucker, not Davidson. No disrespect to Eileen or her rooters, and Eileen’s reel was good, but not great to me and don’t you have to submit everything in the episode you choose or does that rule not apply anymore? I love Davidson, but her reel just doesn’t hold a candle to Tom’s in my book. If I were voting, this is how I would vote.

    1. Heather Tom
    2. Arianne Zucker
    3. Eileen Davidson
    4. Katherine Kelly Lang

I would disagree with this point. I don’t remember all her reels, but I remember last year’s, and I think Tom is playing much different emtoional notes. She’s crying in both, yes, but while she’s suffering the deep sorrow of depression in the previous episode, she’s defiant and furious in this episode.

But even if they’re similar, that’s not necessarily a disadvantage. Chandler Massey won both of his Emmys for variations of the same scene: struggling with his sexuality during a heart-to-heart with Marlena. I think Maura West also won both her awards for similar scenes (having it out with Michael Park).

Heather Tom is a genious at picking Emmy reels. What a performance and completely Emmy worthy. Then we have Eileen Davidson who made Days of Our Lives last year the best soap and in my opnion will win the Emmy again for best show. Eileen’s reel is fantastic and is a breath of fresh air to watch.I do love the range of emotions and the ending is perfect. Ari is great but I don’t think it compares to Davidson and Tom. Same with Lang. I agree this is Tom’s category but I’m going with Davidson takine this one.

    1. Eileen Davidson
    2. Heather Tom
    3. Ari Zucker
    4. Katherine Kelly Lang

Just watched them.  Eileen should win but Heather will.  Her reel and performance feels like the last couple reels of hers that I watched (which won her the Emmy).

Eileen’s performance was far more interesting for me.  Villaniess vs the woman who gets cheated on by a dick.  Yawn!

I do tend to think that Tom is great, but it does seem like she submits the same “type” of performance each year (i.e. Katie suffering at the hands of Bill or Brooke).    I watched the reels in this category, and I think if voters want a counter to Tom, Davidson would be it.  She really hits different angles in her reel, just like Tom, but Davidson’s was very entertaining all the way through.    Voters may still tend to reward Tom, for her spot on anger, but I’d rank them as:

    1.  Davidson.
    2.  Tom.
    3.  Lang.
    4.  Zucker.

With the support of Y&R and DOOL, Davidson will edge out Heather Tom here.

Might Heather Tom not have friends and supportive colleagues from multiple shows as well: Y&R and OLTL in addition to B&B.

Something interesting I noticed in regard to Eileen Davidson’s candidacy: She’s the only villain — not only in the Best Actress category, but among all acting nominees. Sure, there are a couple of characters who are devious or told big lies (Linsey Godfrey, Melissa Claire Egan, Bryan Craig, Eric Martsolf), but they all submitted more or less sympathetic performances. The only flat-out villain is Davidson.

Were there no other good villains in daytime over the last year? Or did voters just not like them?

Heather hasn’t been on two of those shows in years. Davidson has been back and forth between those shows within the last year.

GH had a whole legion of doom. Heather Webber, Cesar Faison, Liesl Obrecht, Helena Cassadine, Jerry Jacks, Julian and Ava Jerome. Out of that group, only William deVry (Julian Jerome), Maura West (Ava Jerome) and Kathleen Gati (Dr. Obrecht) submitted. Gati didn’t even get a pre-nom (which isn’t surprising since her character’s such a cartoon). deVry and West were prenommed but failed to make it to the final list.

I personally think Kristen’s more of a vixen than an outright villain. Sure, she does horrible things. But what character on daytime hasn’t? Plus they’ve made a point of showing her vulnerable side as well. She’s more like Phyllis Romalotti, Carly Roberts or Dorian Lord than Cesar Faison, Stefano DiMera, Helena Cassadine, Mitch Lawrence etc.
