I just watched all five and Nancy kills it! Maura and Eileen are superb too but nancy’s is the best and now I am rooting for her (as I was last year too).

    1. Nancy lee Grahn – perfection. Great story arc, lots of emotions, a great monologue, a terrific poignant ending. Stunning!

    2. Maura West – perfection. Great story Arc, lots of emotions, a great monologue, beautiful ending – I think she will win but I am rooting for Nancy.

    3. Eileen Davidson – poignant, intelligent, fiery, love her work with Marla in particular! She would be a great choice!

    4. Marci Miller – excellent, nice story arc, she is a terrific young actress, just not up to par with the others.

    5. Laura Wright – I found her reel annoying but I did not like her story. Why does she always shout all of her lines? She never speaks in a regular monotone. Shrill. I like her very much, especially in real life, but not so much Carly, who I don’t really care for. She was much better last year in her mourning scenes.

Nancy lee Grhan for the win!

The stellar talent in the Best Actress category is the strongest example of the randomness and subjectiveness of who wins an Emmy.
Four of the nominees make it almost impossible to pick a winner. It just boils down to personal taste.

5.) Laura Wright – GH. Good reel but not a great reel. She cobbled together four scenes where the math doesn’t completely add up. First scene is a kickass scene where she lays into Sonny about Nell. It’s a great build up to a confrontation with Nell and Nell does show up. Rather than give us the payoff where she rips into Nell from Hell, the scene switches to her laying into Joslyn for having an unsupervised house party, what the wha..wha? The remainder of her submission is her bawling w/ Steve Burton over his return as Jason. Laura Wright is one of the best actresses on the planet. Her greatest strength as an actor is that she can go full on KILL BILL, yet she always submits material where she’s soft, vulnerable or conflicted.

4.) Marci Miller – DOOL. Did Ellen Wheeler and Sharon Case have a love child and name her Marci Miller? She looks like a cross pollination of the two and with their combined talent. This girl has serious game. I’d never seen her work before but it was nothing short of spellbinding. She brought the house down in her reel as the woman on the verge of a nervous breakdown. I did not want to blink for fear of missing a second of her work. Miller’s performance is flawless from start to finish. Because the competition is so tight, I went nick picky to find something wrong and the only thing I could fault her for was not giving us an even longer tape to enjoy her work.

3.) Maura West – GH. Maura’s performance is a supernova and she serves up everything from soup to nuts. She delivers her standard Jack in the Box, screaming like a lunatic from out of nowhere trade mark style of acting and it friggin’ works in the context of her submission. Three scenes that tell a complete story where she becomes the victim of her own villainy and vanity. Part Bette Davis and part James Cagney, I can easily see West winning. She literally grabs the viewer by the collar and drags you into her self inflicted nightmare.

2.) Eileen Davidson – Y & R. Out of all the tapes, Davidson’s is the best and has the most impact. For decades I’ve loved Davidson’s work on Y & R but just not the character of Ashley. Ashley was your standard cookie cutter soap heroine, gorgeous and always in romantic turmoil. This time around I fell in love with the character. Viewers have known forever that Ashley isn’t a biological Abbott and when that SOB ” smiling Jack ” barks at Ashley ” He’s my father, not yours ” a knife went through my heart. Davidson rips Jack a new one the way Angela Bassett did to Laurence Fishbone in the back of the limo in ” What’s Love Got To Do With It “. The power and integrity, and of course wounded hurt she brought to that scene was Emmy Gold. Davidson starts her reel strong and finishes strong. Watching her play that last scene as a woman with her back against the wall with Beth Maitland is heart wrenching. Davidson doesn’t fall victim to showboating or
grandstanding in her work, she plays the truth and it’s perfection.

1.) Nancy Lee Grahn – GH.In a close race where it could be anyone’s game, I have to hand it to Nancy Lee Grahn. She’s superb in her reel as a woman fighting her addiction to alcohol only to learn that her true addiction is her destructive love for her husband Julian. Grahn is so raw and vulnerable in her first scene at AA that I thought I was watching a documentary, she’s just that vividly real. Her second scene where she’s going through withdrawl should be required viewing for every up and coming actor. Her last scene, break up sex with her husband was beautifully played. What works best about her reel for those of us familiar Nancy Lee Grahn’s long history of work, is that we get to see her play scenes with her heart instead of her head. Both Julia Wainwright of ” Santa Barbara ” and Alexis Davis of ” General Hospital ” tend to intellectualize their emotions ( through no fault of Lee Grahn’s ) rather than live them, yet in her final scene, Grahn play’s the scene with her heart and does not miss a beat. She’s nothing short of brilliant, the alpha and the omega.

I think Maura West is headed for the win but I’m pulling for Nancy Lee Grahn who owned her reel.

Eileen Davidson SLAYED..wow…the opening scene with Peter Bergman…where Jack throw’s Ashley paternity in her face. She NAILED her reel. So deserving! I will say though, her reel was not quite as good as the one she submitted playing Kristen on DAYS that won her the Emmy.

The GH women had wonderful reels….West and Grahn had better reels than Wright, but ultimately after re-watching, Grahn has a clear nuance that is resonating with me more than West louder reel, which almost feels a bit over-acted (especially the first half with Carly/Sonny).

Marci Miller had a surprisingly strong reel……i see many great things from her. She could benefit from a GH split…but ultimately I think Davidson will benefit the most from that type of vote split.

    1) Davidson (Y&R)
    2) Grahn (GH)
    3) Miller (DAYS)
    4) West (GH)
    5) Wright (GH)

Very strong category…anyone could win really. No one bombed out at all. Davidson should win, she will have major support from Y&R/B&B, and maybe even some from DAYS.

After watching all five, I am torn between Grahn, Davidson, and West. Davidson surprised me the most. But West is so damn good. And then Grahn went and broke my heart.

I literally have no idea where I will come down between those three.

WOW! These reels are out of this world. I’d feel comfortable ranking 4 of them as a winning reel in most years. Even the 5th reel is pretty damn good.

Davidson is a talented actress who always delivers. But something about this reel felt lacking to me. I think it’s that she underplays scenes where I wish she had gone full throttle. I wanted more from her. It’s probably a writing issue. At the end of the day, she just can’t do as much with a character like Ashley as she can with Kristen or Susan on DAYS. And the reel felt suppporting to me.

Miller pieced together 4 random, completely unrelated scenes into a fantastic, compelling reel. Every scene is a wonderful showcase for her and she acts her heart out in each one. I especially liked the Jennifer and Ben segments. I wish I could rank her #1, but as astonishing as her work is here, it can’t compete with what the ladies of GH brought to the table.

Wright is fantastic in her reel and even better in West’s. She’s excellent confronting Sonny about Nelle, even better apologizing to Jason for not recognizing that Drew wasn’t him and somehow even better going off on Ava in West’s reel. She’s played these types of scenes so many times before but she brings so much depth to them. This is dynamic, compelling work.

I’ve never seen NLG so raw and vulnerable. This is devastating, powerful work. I remember saying that Peter Bergman wouldn’t win another Emmy until he showed a different side to his acting and delivered a performance voters didn’t know he had in him. I believe that’s what Grahn has done here. This is the most emotional, heartfelt, least intellectual performance I’ve ever seen from her. And it would be more than enough to win her a long overdue 1st lead Emmy if she wasn’t up against daytime’s finest actress at the very top of her game.

I was afraid West’s reel would feel long and disjointed. But I was wrong. This is fierce, capital A acting at its finest. It’s amazing how she can go so over the top and yet still make it feel grounded. She has such control over her vocal inflections, facial expressions and body language. This is epic, legendary work. She literally set a fire with this reel.

    1. West
    2. Grahn
    3. Wright
    4. Miller
    5. Davidson

I found watching the reels after reading this thread was surprising. Some of you are better writers than the actresses are in their performances.

Davidson was oversold for me. Her hysteria failed to impress.

I liked Miller, too. She has the chops. It will be interesting to see how long until a smart prime time casting director snatches her up.

I remember watching Wright for years on Guiding Light. I think her chances are better than some have said. When tapes are used, nominees who appear on fellow player’s tapes often increase the opportunity to win. Wright is almost better on West’s tapes than her own. I could see a panel being swayed by the additional screen time.

West was great. That one rolling eyeball in the hospital bandages is haunting. She was great on As The World Turns, but better here.

When all is said and done, I am supporting NLG. She is magnificent. I think she will win because her performance is so different than the other nominees. Her pain is held close to the chest. I found myself leaning in to better appreciate her work. I felt myself rooting for her character. I was engaged emotionally. She deserves that Emmy!

I just got through watching the reels and everyone did good but it was two reels that blew me away.

    5. Nancy Lee Grahn (Alexis,GH) I expected better from Grahn who’s usually at the top of her game. The scenes at the AA meeting did nothing for me. The second scene with Julian was ok and the last pair of scenes did nothing for me. If she had gave me Linda Dano or Melody Thomas Scott alcoholic storyline then maybe I would have voted her #1 or #2 but I just didn’t feel it.

    4. Laura Wright (Carly,GH) This tape was ok but I felt as if Wright was a lil over the top. I wish she had picked a scene with Nelle but she didn’t. The scenes with Burton were enduring but the rest was flat.

    3. Marci Miller (Abigail,Days) This isn’t what I expected out of Miller. This was ten times better than what I thought she would put on her reel. Her scenes with Jennifer were brilliant. Her scenes at the wedding were phenomenal. Her scenes with Chad damn near had me crying. Her scenes with Dario were very emotional and beautifully acted.

    2. Maura West (Ava,GH) West will most likely take it home but she has something that might not let her take the gold home…The tape is long but it was a thrill ride from start to finish. From her confession to Carly and Sonny to her hospital bed talks with Scott and Dante to her being vulnerable with Griffin. This reel was brilliant. But I felt as if the voters might have thought it was too long.

    1. Eileen Davidson (Ashley,Y&R) Ms. Davidson blew me away. Her range was good. She didn’t overact her scenes and she held her own with Peter Bergman and Beth Maitland and Marla Adams. My favorite scene was when Ashrley confronted Grant in front of everyone. Her other scenes with Bergman were emotional and I felt Ashley’s pain. Then the last scene with Maitland was very believable.

I want Davidson to win but the academy might go with West. It’s too close to call.

Alright well here are my rankings of the reels. First of all i want to give them all kudos for good reels:

5: Laura Wright: She was very good in this reel with the nelle and the reunion with Jason. I thought she could have edited the Joss stuff out. Laura gave Carly all the emotions discovering Jason was alive. The problem with Wright is all her competitors submitted better reels. She had a good real it just wasnt great.

4: Eileen Davidson: i thought Davidsons reel was really good but i was more underwhelmed then i thought i would be. Shes great with Peter Bergman and Beth Maitland. After watching i thought that was good but i was expecting to be wowed and i wasnt. Her reel she won from days many years ago was better.

3: Nancy Lee Grahn: thought those scenes she had with the AA stuff was fantastic. Her reel is alot better then last years which i thought was good but she edited this one alot better. The stuff with the Tom Baker stuff was great contrasting with her alcoholism. She was excellent with Devry. She could win it

2: Marci Miller: Wow her reel was so good. First of all these other actresses she was up against have like 25 to 35 years in the biz. Eileen has like 35, Nancy almost 30, Laura has 27 and Maura has 23 this girl has not even two years. Her stuff with Melissa Reeves was great, the stuff with Billy Flynn was so good and not overacted and then the wedding and stuff Dario. Marci Miller to me is someone who will see in primetime or movies. She reminds me of a young Julianne Moore or even Jennifer Ferrin from ATWT. She lits up the screen and has major charisma. Something tells me will see Marci in her own primetime show in 2 years. She has youth and buzz but congrats to her for breaking in a tough category. Shes the dark horse. The 3 GH ladies might affect their win.

1: Maura West: OMG do i need to say more. She channeled Betty Davis for a reel that left me riveted. The stuff with Sonny and Carly in the warehouse was incredible. Her range and acting is unlike any daytime actress. The stuff in the hospital was great and then those scenes with Griffin. West proves shes not only one of the best actresses in daytime but ever. Her only negative is it ran long. She gave me total goosebumps.

Wow, I’m loving the contrasts here, and so many great points! I wrote this up before reading everyone else’s comments, and now I feel a little mean, but okay.

All of these ladies did great work, so I’ll say now that my criticisms are within that context and because I was looking to be critical. I’ll discuss them in the order I saw them.

Laura Wright’s reel was a good mix of your standard Carly yelling and softer scenes with Jason. On paper, it seems like it should be competitive, but for me it just faded against the competition. Maybe it was the writing, which felt fairly soap-typical for the most part.

I really enjoyed Eileen Davidson’s reel and seeing the snippets of what Ashley was dealing with over the year, mostly her brother and mother. I was surprised by how much of this was angry or antagonistic, but it still felt in character and had a good emotional undercurrent. There are moments in the office scenes with Jack, after he’s reminded Ashley that John Abbott isn’t her biological father, that are just stellar. The writing in the scenes with Traci feels unduly bullish, and it’s basically impossible for a character to make Traci cry and not seem like a bit of a monster, but overall Davidson keeps Ashley sympathetic, and the whole reel is highly entertaining.

Marci Miller’s reel is a good bunch of scenes that fit together oddly, and even moreso considering the order of them, which is neither logical nor chronological. (Abigail is divorcing Chad, then breaking up with Chad, then marrying Chad, then carrying to Dario about breaking up with Chad.) Miller’s emotions are pitch perfect and highly believable, though I found the way she was dropping the Gs at the end of all her words in the fight scenes with Chad really distracting. The wedding scene before Abigail punches Ben, standing like a deer in headlights, are a good contrast, and the capper with Dario makes a nice closing note. Beautiful work overall.

Maura West has some really good moments in her reel, but I feel like the juiciest material was mishandled. The scenes with Sonny and Carly confronting Ava in the first segment of the reel seemed like gold on paper, but West overacts them a little. Many of her lines are shouted, for really no reason, which take oomph out of when Ava actually is wound up enough to be shouting. Maybe West felt like she had to justify Ava eventually getting so worked up that she threw that lamp and nearly burned herself to death, but it was just too much for me. The hospital scenes with Scotty were very well acted, though, and West was spot on, truly seeming grievously injured and in excruciating pain. The final segment with Griffin had its moments as well, and it must have been hard for West to fully do her thing with Ava in that Phantom of the Art Gallery mask, but the whole interaction sort of pushes Ava back into unsympathetic territory and makes West a less appealing vote. Overall, I was disappointed in this one.

I am still having the hardest time processing Nancy Lee Grahn’s reel. There are fantastic moments, most especially, for me, when Alexis breaks down with Julian because she just wants a drink. The need is palpable. Grahn also builds really nicely in the segment at the AA meeting. Most of the rest of the reel is good and effective but didn’t feel terribly exciting to me. Also, the way the reel started, at the AA meeting with a lot of sniffling and hair tossing that felt like affectation, really took me out of the moment. By the end of that I was pulled back in, but it still stuck with me. Ultimately, I think many people are bigger fans of Grahn’s acting than I tend to be (I generally think she’s good but not as good as many others do), so I should probably evaluate on a curve. So . . .

    1. Eileen Davidson, Y&R
    2. Nancy Lee Grahn, GH
    3. Marci Miller, DAYS
    4. Maura West, GH
    5. Laura Wright, GH

Davidson would definitely be my pick based on the reels, and Wright feels out of the race. I’m sure I think Miller is better in her reel than West in hers, but I just can’t decide where NLG comes in.

I hadn’t thought about it, but I also think Laura Wright was better in Maura West’s reel than her own. It could give Wright a boost I hadn’t considered, but ultimately I think it hurt West more than anything else. Wright’s balls-to-the-wall shouting felt heartfelt and genuine in those scene and made West’s look a little put on.

After reviewing West’s reel again…it feels more “over-acted” than it did before to me.

It is not holding up as well to me. It was “shoutey”.

    Personal Ranking:

    1. Marci Miller – It was electrifying. It was different. I definitely think she should win, but I’m guessing her age and “newness” is the big roadblock.
    2. Nancy Lee Grahn
    3. Eileen Davidson – Sidenote: The reel she won with a few years ago still remains my favorite overall reel since I started watching them (year before).
    4. Maura West – i don’t like long reels :\
    5. Laura Wright
