Did anybody else notice the big surprise on GH? Michelle Stafford has joined the cast as Silas’s in-a-coma ex-wife, Nina.
Thoughts and impressions?
I haven’t seen it yet, but I heard about it. Great get for GH! This could be awesome!
I had read rumors, but was truly surprised (: It took me a few minutes after the show ended to figure out it was MS! (: They did agreat job of keeping this one a secret!
Biggest casting secret in ages! I knew there were rumors, but I truly believed Stafford wanted to move on to other mediums. I loved The Stafford Project and thought that would surely propel her into some primetime gigs. While I want to be mad at her for abandoning Phyllis in the middle of a meaty storyline, I cannot be upset with her as an artist who would want to try other characters. On the other hand, what does this have to say about TPTB at Y&R? They obviously were not good enough to Michelle to a) keep her on the show; or b) lure her back to the show.
Just because Stafford said that there was no problem with JFP and the writers at Y&R, that doesn’t necessarily mean it to be true. She may have wanted out because she was unhappy.
Nonetheless, I can’t wait to see Stafford go head-to-head with Maura West again.
Does anyone know if this is a long-term contract gig for Michelle or something short-term to help pay the bills?
My first thought when I read this yesterday was: HOW ARE THEY DOING THIS? GH has been incredible at these big casting coups, and I’m unabashedly jealous that Stafford is at GH and not at DAYS. It’s obviously great news for GH, and I love that they take advantage of their ability to surprise the audience with an end-of-episode reveal like this. Based on the interview Daytime Confidential did with Ron Carlivati, it sounds like it’ll be a little while before she starts airing in earnest, and this scene was just secretly taped and snuck into the episode last minute.
I also wondered if it’s long-term or not. Part of me thinks GH can’t possibly afford to pay her long-term, but I don’t know if that’s true. I would also think she’d want to be in this for six months or so and then look to try something else. She doesn’t really have to be concerned about turning through soaps too quickly because, at the very least, she could always go back to Y&R. And how funny that both Phyllis and Nina are in a coma. Stafford mixing it up with West will be great, of course, but reading the DC interview, it’s kind of ridiculous how many newer characters GH has all thrown together in storylines. Nina will be involved with Silas, Madeline, Obrecht, Britt, Nathan, Ava eventually. And that’s only like half of the relatively new characters that have been thrown onto the canvas in the last couple of years.
Anyway, getting Stafford in board might be the thing that convinces me to try GH again on a more regular basis, though that’s kind of tough when the people I know who watcht the show are abandoning ship.
