Thaao Penghlis (Ex-Tony/Andre DiMera) is returning to the show.  He is on contract and has already begun filming.  No word yet on which character he will play, Tony or Andre DiMera (or both).

In addition, A Martinez (Ex-Cruz, SB) has also joined the show on contract in a new role.  He has begun filming.  No other details have been released yet.

Paul Tefler (Xander Kiriakis) has been let go and will be exiting the show.  The actor has already finished taping.  Look for Xander to leave Salem around the same time as Melissa Archer’s character Serena.

This is horrible news – I simply can’t stand Thaao Penghlis in either of these roles. I think he’s a terrible actor. This is really disappointing news ): One of my least favorites ever ever ever…

As for A Martinez – that could be interesting, depending on who he will play and who he is paired with…

Aw, I really liked Zander – ): I wanted him to find his way into Victor’s heart… I hope one of the other soaps scoops up Paul Tefler!!! (:

No surprise about Paul Tefler, as I didn’t expect Xander to stick around long term.  I was really surprised that Thaao Penghlis is back and on contract, and not pleasantly so.  I think he’s fine as an actor, and he’s actually the one who got DAYS back in the lead acting categories at the Emmys back in 2007ish, but I have no desire to see either character back on screen.  Unless I’m forgetting a detail, both Andre and Tony were rather definitively dead, and neither is worth the level of suspended disbelief required to bring them back.  The story with the two of them became so convoluted and ridiculous that I’d hoped they’d just stop talking about Andre altogether.  Maybe he’ll be neither Andre nor Tony but a third lookalike character, or maybe the Tony that was supposedly impaled on the docs in that skirmish with Phillip was really some other person entirely.

So, I’m not thrilled, but I’m even less thrilled that the SOD headline for this on Twitter was vague enough to make me think it might be Christie Clark who was back.  So disappointing.  On the bright side, maybe with Penghlis back we’ll get to see a little Leann Hunley???

While I’ve never minded Tony, I agree that it’s a bit of a stretch at this point to bring him back.  I blame this on Ken Corday’s hard-on for the DiMera clan.  I’ve long advocated for the DiMeras to leave Salem for good…at least for a while.  They are entirely too cartoony at this point for me and bringing back either Tony or Andre just proves that point.

I like the idea of A Martinez being Rafe and Gabi’s long-lost father.  This will certainly give Galen Gering something to do, but I hope it involves Hope because the show is missing the boat on a Rafe/Hope romance in fave of Hope and Aidan who are age inappropriate (especially if they are aging Claire to make Hope the grandmother of a teen).  But I digress.

The casting news I want to hear from Days of Our Lives is rather simple – Billy Warlock or even someone else being brought back as Frankie Brady who has a built-in story with Eve and Jennifer.  I don’t know why the show is not capitalizing on the Jennifer/Eve feud by bringing back their original point of contention.  (Of course, I’d also like to read that Shawn Christian is leaving because, as I’ve said countless times, Daniel Jonas has no purpose on this show.)

If TPTB are truly interested in saving this show, they need to do a better job than bringing in a bunch of newbies as teens (Joey, Claire, etc.) who are mostly related and invest in something more meaty and substantial.

Pretty ambivalent about the Thaao Penglish news.  I like him as an actor, and I really liked Tony back in the day.  However, with the Melaswen stuff I never understood at what point Andre started being Tony, so the whole thing is one big mess in my head.  (If someone could enlighten me, I would really appreciate it, especially if Tony was actually Tony during the Aremid storyline)

If they wanted to bring in more DiMeras, I would have gone with Peter over Tony.

And there are at least 10 other characters I would have brought back before Tony/Andre, chief among them as Pujolsfan said, is Frankie Brady.  Makes NO SENSE WHATSOVER that they haven’t brought him back yet, given how juicy the Eve/Jennifer rivalry is.

Also, I hate that they are aging Claire to a teen.  That means that if and when Shawn and Belle come back they will be in another age group than where they should be.  But anyway, we’ll see.

Is that confirmed that she show is bringing in a teenage Claire?  Kind of crazy, although Claire would actually have to be almost a teenager anyway since she’s a year or two older than Ciara.  The idea of bringing in Claire without Belle and Shawn seems ridiculous, but what do I know.  A. Martinez as Rafe and Gabi’s father is an idea with a lot of potential.  Would that mean the show will finally cast their frail, ever-ailing mother?

I have mixed feelings about a lot of the moves the show seems to be making.  I like that a lot of the veterans are returning and/or getting contracts and stronger storylines, but I also worry that the backward-looking trend will be bad for the writing of the show.  Also, some of these moves, like Thaao Penghlis’s return, are puzzling, and yeah, I would MUCH rather see a good list of other characters back on the show before Tony/Andre/a potental third character.  Frankie Brady is an obvious choice indeed, and I’d love to see Billy Warlock back (though it might look a little awkward because Kassie DePaiva seems about a foot taller than him), and of course, as I’ve been saying since they got rid of her, Carrie should be in Salem.  CARRIE CARRIE CARRIE.

When I read this casting news, it brought to mind a sketch from “In Living Color” called “Old Train.”

Given my dislike for Stefano, you could probably guess that my reaction to Tony returning is not positive. Hopefully, it will be better than I anticipate.

I would’ve preferred them bringing Peter back in the form of Jon Hensley. Thaao always looks like he has a permanent tan.

The show keeps getting rid of characters that I wouldn’t have minded them sticking around…Melinda Trask, Xander, Sheryl, Vargas.

I agree with all of that, syrus.  I appreciate that the show sometimes just wants a short term character, but I definitely feel like they could have done more with Vargas, and could have showed us more of Melinda Trask.  Sheryl was a better character than Jordan, Clyde or Ben, and I’m enjoying Xander just fine.

Jon Hensley as Peter would have been great.

After catching up on internet news from the past week or so, it seems like Thaao Penghlis is coming back to play Andre, which is the worse option.  Andre’s entire personality is basically being an evil maniac.

Great points on all counts here.
The only thing I would disagree about is Jon Hensley as Peter.  It makes sense visually, but I don’t think he has the stage presence to play a DiMera.  I’m not sure who exactly I’d cast instead.  Former East Coast soapers does seem like a good group to search though.

I like this game of trying to recast Peter.  I think William deVry could have made a great Peter, but he’s too busy being a dick on GH.  I’m imagining Vincent Irizarry possibly?  He already seems like a DiMera.

^^  Great suggestions!  I was going to suggest Michael Lowry or Matt Walton (both ex OLTL), but I like these suggestions even better!  Imagine WdV and/or VI sharing the screen with Eileen Davidson…
