The DAYS casting news just continues to keep rolling.

Soap Opera Digest is breaking news this morning that John-Paul Lavoisier (Ex-Rex, OLTL) has been hired by DAYS to take over the role of Philip Kiriakis (son of Victor Kiriakis and Kate Roberts) last portrayed by Jay Kenneth Johnson.  Lavoisier is already filming on DAYS and will first air in December.

In other news, Sal Stowers (Ex-Cassandra, AMC) has also been cast in the contract role of Lani.  Outside of the character name, little has been released about exactly who Lani is and how she will fit into the fabric of Salem.  Stowers has been taping for awhile now and will first air in September.

Lavoisier & Stowers are the 13th and 14th contract casting announcements since the hiring of new Headwriters Josh Griffith & Dena Higley.  Previously announced contract casting: Mary Beth Evans (Kayla), Judy Evans (Adrienne), Wally Kurth (Justin), James Lastovic (Joey), Peter Reckell (Bo), Stephen Nichols (Steve), Camila Banus (Gabi), A Martinez (Eduardo), Martha Madison (Belle), Jason Cook (Shawn), Thaao Penghils (Tony/Andre) and Tamara Braun (Ava).  In addition, Alison Sweeney (Sami) will be returning on recurring status.

Insiders are hinting there are still some major casting announcements coming.

I’m really pleased by this news.  I like JPL most of the time, but more than that I’m really excited that Philip will be back.  This is an impressive list of players getting contracts, which makes me feel like there must be a few surprise exits on the horizon.

We already some contract players ending soon…Melissa Archer (Serena), True O’Brien (Paige), Paul Telfer (Xander), Freddie Smith (Sonny) & Daniel Cosgrove (Aiden) are confirmed OUT.

There is speculation James Read (Clyde) is out and that Shawn Christian (Daniel) is about to leave the show.  Guy Wilson (Will) and Christopher Sean (Paul) are also rumored to be out as well.  A few of the recurring/guest cast have also been let go.

I am hoping any praying Arianne Zucker does not leave with Shawn Christian (they are together IRL), but you never know.

I’m very happy to hear that John-Paul Lavoisier is joining Days. He was one of my favorites on OLTL. I imagine some fans will be disappointed that Jay Kenneth Johnson is not returning; he was a very good actor. But I am looking forward to JPL.

I am, however, disappointed to hear that True O’Brien and Christopher Sean may be leaving.

True O’Brien is confirmed gone.  Haven’t heard anything about Christopher Sean or Guy Wilson, though Wilson’s contract I believe was for 2 years and that would be up this August.  My guess is if Sean is out then they will probably retcon or totally forget about Paul being John’s son.

They have also cast Olivia Rose Keegan as the newly aged Claire.  This role is currently recurring.  Jason47 had a teaser that featured pictures of 4 upcoming new generation cast members.  Keegan was one of those, I do believe the other three will be aged Theo, Ciara and Chase.

That sucks True O’Brien is out, but I guess it’s not that surprising.  The others that are confirmed I had already heard about, but I’ve been hopefully assuming James Read’s Clyde won’t be on much longer.  I’m not that attached to Guy Wilson, so I wouldn’t mind seeing the actor go, but I’d much rather see Will recast than having him off canvas.  I also really like Christopher Sean as Paul, so I’ll be sad to see him go if that’s the case.  I also didn’t know that Shawn Christian and Ari Zucker were together in real life.  That makes me dislike their on-screen pairing even more (which I guess is unfair, but it’s true).  I guess if I had to pick, I’d rather have both of them than neither, but hopefully Shawn Christian and Daniel will move on while Nicole sticks around and gets better storylines.

I also hate the idea of aging Ciara, so I hope that’s not true.  Lauren Boles is great in the role, and I have been looking forward to seeing her dealing with Bo’s return.  That’ll lose so much impact if they bring in another actress to play the part.  I also wouldn’t expect Chase to still be around if Aiden is going.

So many changes.  Some of them are really exciting, but others I’m pretty bummed about.  Especially when I consider that some of the people coming in are characters who are new or essentially new because they’ve been aged, it bugs me that some of my favorite things about the show will just be swept up and discarded like trash.  I feel like I’m being punished for investing in the show, to try to draw in the elusive lapsed viewers.

EmmyLoser, I understand and share your frustration. In my entire daytime viewing history, this is the longest I have ever sustained viewership of Days and also the first time I considered it my favorite. The JJ/Paige and Will/Sonny/Paul stories have been the biggest and best this year, so I find myself wondering how the show’s vibe will change.

On the other hand, I have to give Days credit. The show has been struggling in the ratings and TPTB are taking very bold and definitive steps to save it. Although I personally may not like all the changes, I admire the effort to listen to viewers and cast members as well as the attempt to boost the ratings. I do not see any such effort from GH (yet).

I am keeping an open mind and will welcome all the returning/new actors, but ultimately the storytelling will be key.

In any case, I am looking forward to seeing JPL. I hope they give him a good story.

Paige was a bore until recently, there was a reason many referred to ther as Biege.

It has already been confirmed that Lauren Boles taped her final scenes and the show sent out casting calls for Ciara AND Chase.  The rumor is Aiden is killed and Hope takes Chase in.  I’m betting on a Ciara/Chase/Claire triangle.

Terrell Ransom’s last air date as Theo was July 9th.

Somehow I missed the news (or knew but forgot) that True O’Brien and Lauren Boles were exiting.  LB was a fantastic little actress and I’m going to miss her.  As for TO’B, Paige basically has run her course, but it makes me wonder what will happen to Kassie Depaiva.  She has been a great addition to the cast, and whie Eve has potential beyond Paige, her issues with Paige have been central to her presence in Salem.

As for Arianne Zucker, I wouldn’t assume that her and Shawn Christian are a package deal based on their real life romance.  Lots of real life couples who act together are fine despite one of them leaving/losing their job on the show.  In fact, one example is when Kyle Lowder exited Days whereas Ari stayed til date.

I am not looking forward to a recast Ciara. One of the worst moves thus far from the new regime.

I’ll certainly try going into all of this with an open mind.  Like I said, I’m excited about some of the changes, really excited to see some of the veterans coming back and getting prominent storylines.  And you’re right, robbalto, that Ken Corday and co. are really doing this in an effort to respond to viewer criticism and boost the ratings.  I know that I, and quite a few of us, have been in the minority about some of the things we’re enjoying about the show.  As much as I don’t like some of these moves, the only thing that I’d really categorize as a mistake is getting rid of Lauren Boles to age Ciara.  She’s been playing that character since 2008, and she’s great at it.  Unfortunately, I think the show undervalued her because she’s a child.  If the show wanted other teens, instead of using Ciara and Chase, they could have brought JT back and/or had any of these returning characters show up with a teenage girl.  I guess what’s done is done, but whoever comes into that role will probably have a hard way to go in winning over fans.  Consider this my temper tantrum on the matter.

So all of the gay characters will be gone soon, hmmmm…. I’m going to be a naysayer and say that I am not very happy with most of these news items. I thought JPL was only adequate on OLTL. Sal Stowers was terrific on AMC but I’m not sure where she would fit on the canvas. If Paige is gone, then why would they keep Eve on the show? Getting worrried… when they bring lots of new characters/actors on it usually means some vets get the ax ):

nooooooooooo, not my lauren boles, she’s such an amazingly talented younger actress, jj and paige are teens, why do they have to get rid of paige and age the kids, i too was looking forward to the rebellious ciara when bo returns, played by lauren boles, i still love you days, but you just made a huuuuuuuge mistake.

Even with Paige gone, the animosity between Eve and Jennifer is still alive and well, as well as Eve and JJ.  It seems like they may need Eve as Jennifer’s rival, since I don’t see much storyline on the horizon for her currently.

I highly doubt Ari is going anywhere with her biggest fan back writing for her. Dena loves Nicole.
