According to DC, Rebecca Budig is back at GH as Hayden.
I have three wishes for this:
1. They give her a better wardrobe than the drab she had last time.
2. She becomes a viable character rival rather than plot rival for a major player in Port Charles.
3. This return is short, if they cannot fulfill wishes #1 and #2.

Honestly I know she is well liked, but I was never a fan of her on AMC.July 31, 2015 at 5:51 pm #429619
I like Rebecca Budig. I think she’s a very good actress, and it’s logical to bring her back given the status of the Jason storyline. She is reportedly on contract, so it will be interesting to see where they go with her character. Hayden had great chemistry with Nikolas, but he tried to murder her; there is really no coming back from that. Love your summary of thoughts on her return, gdfl!August 1, 2015 at 10:05 pm #429620
I am also intrigued that she is on contract. Her last run limited the character’s prospects somewhat, but there still is a lot of potential.
As an aside, I think Budig would have made a great Sam recast. I personally have no use for the character at all, but Budig has a badass quality that would suit the character plus a strength and charisma that KMo has never found.

Love that wish list, gdfl. I’m of course glad about Becky Buds being back on GH, and on contract no less. You may recall that I had sort of high hopes for Hayden before Nikolas had her shot in the head, so maybe I’ll actually get something I want where this show is concerned. Hayden and Tyler Christopher’s Nikolas to have great chemistry, and while the fact that he tried to have her killed isn’t ideal, but hey, Sami shot EJ in the head at point blank range on DAYS, and not only did they continue to be a supercouple but she went on playing the victim in that relationship after that. If the fans like a couple, the bar of things they won’t get past is almost unreachable.August 13, 2015 at 6:28 am #429622
It was rumored that she signed a four year contract, which initially sounded excessive to me, but apparently it’s true. I think this is a good thing for a couple of reasons. The character is not (necessarily) mob related and has a lot of potential for growth with not a lot of restrictive back story, and Budig is more than capable of being a Lead and has a good history with Jean.
I imagine one criticism might be that this will focus in on a new character rather than an established vet. My responses to that are (1) it worked with Maura West, (2) Budig (as was the case with West) is an established soap star and therefore not completely unfamiliar, and (3) Hayden is being integrated with long standing existing characters and not initiating an entirely new crowd (a la Dylan/Avery/Joe/etc or Chelsea and her insta-family in Genoa City).
I also like this because I’m hoping it’ll distance the focus from Liz and Sam. Yes those characters and associated actresses are fan favourites, but Liz could very well be beyond repair, Sam has always been a snore, and Budig is a far better and more consistent actress than both RH and KMo.

So since Hayden has amnesia and Jake has amnesia, can someone please just give the audience amnesia that the last year and a half ever happened?August 13, 2015 at 10:37 am #429624
Wow, I didn’t think shows gave out four-year contracts anymore. It’s great news as far as I’m concerned.August 16, 2015 at 1:17 am #429625
This is really wonderful news for GH as well. If Rebecca Budig got a four-year contract, that means the show must’ve also been renewed for four more years, right, or am I interpreting this wrong?
I’m so glad GH made the (what I believe is right) decision to invest more into the character of Hayden and have Budig signed on as long-term contract player, as I’d been disappointed that her starting stint was rather short-lived and ended up with Hayden in a coma (but at least this was a much better outcome than meeting an untimely death as is often the fate of new such characters). She does share great chemistry with Tyler Christopher, which is definitely a big plus if the show is planning to move in the direction of a Hayden/Nikolas romantic pairing. And as gdfl said, coming in as a new character with not a lot of restrictive backstory provides for a lot of storyline potential for Hayden in building new alliances/rivalries with other established characters and in perhaps also becoming a Lead player, which Budig has shown from her time on AMC she is more than capable of handling.
I still have warm memories of the days I used to watch her when she was still on Guiding Light (looking back over the recasts, she was probably my favorite Michelle Bauer). My mom was particularly excited when I shared with her the news that Budig is making a full return to GH (she’s a big fan of hers and still misses seeing her daily on The Better Show)!August 16, 2015 at 4:46 pm #429626
I don’t know when GH’s current contract is up, but I wouldn’t assume that GH is guaranteed to be on the air for the length of the actor contracts they give out. DAYS is currently only renewed through, I believe, fall of 2016 but I think they can and like are still handing out actor contracts they go beyond that.August 19, 2015 at 6:08 pm #429627
Thnx for clarifying this, EmmyLoser. Your explanation certainly sounds very plausible, even though it would’ve been so great if the show had been renewed for that length of time as well. Keeping my fingers crossed…
