Daytime Confidential is revealing today that negotiations between Rebecca Herbst and GENERAL HOSPITAL/ABC have reached an impasse and that the show could likely be losing another major star in its arsenal.

Also clouding the negotiation process is word that Sony has got itself in the mix and is very interested in bring the actress over to DAYS OF OUR LIVES.

Where will RH land…we will find out soon.

As good as I’m sure that would be for her (She’s been poorly served on GH for years.), I would HATE to lose a legacy character with real ties to the first characters. Oh well it’s out of my hands anyway.

Surprisingly, as annoyed as I’ve been by Elizabeth, I think I’d rather she stay on GH.  I certainly don’t think a recast situation would be better over there — it’s not RH’s fault the character’s been written the way she has — and the character is mid-story, not to mention a longstanding legacy character and the show’s strongest connection to the hospital currently.

While I bet she’d be great on DAYS, they need to get their priorities in order.  I’m going to be very hesitant to support them hiring any female in this age range as long as Carrie’s not back on the show.

Oh a recast is just out of the question.

A recast is perfectly acceptable to me.   I’ve rarely liked the character of Elizabeth, through no fault of Rebecca. It is the writing they’ve saddled her with.   Basically post-2001 she was never really developed any further.  I’m really not sure why but they basically just stopped giving her frontburner stories.   She kind of just stayed a supporting character.

There is a group of actresses who seem to have large fanbases, but whose appeal I have never understood.  Rebecca Herbst is one of those actresses; others would be Sharon Case, Kelly Monaco, and Christel Khalil.  And that feeling re RH was compounded when, not so long ago, Martha Madison stepped in to temporarily play Elizabeth and did it so well.  But even though RH is not a personal favourite of mine, I like having Elizabeth around and I would prefer that RH keep that role if it means keeping that fanbase.

I’m not sure what Days would want with Herbst, but they sure as the hell better not be thinking of recasting Carrie.

Yeah this. The JFP regime of the mob stories really hurt her the most because the storyline of her rape and Lucky’s “death” is probably what inspires the loyalty among fans gdfl doesn’t understand.

If they want her as a Carrie recast, I might just stop watching the show altogether.

But I agree with the rest of this as well.  I was shocked when fans mounted a campaign to save RH’s job out of love for her.  I’ve seen her a couple of times outside the show where I thought she’s a talented actress that I could like in a different role, even though I’ve never liked her as Elizabeth.  Though I did not see the rape story, Lucky’s death or any other stories from 15 years ago that would have made fans love her, I did see her during the story of Jake’s death, where I was somewhat underwhelmed by her.   And yes, the only time I actually liked the character was during the brief time when Martha Madison was playing her.  I also don’t really get why people love Sharon Case.  When Sharon was a more likeabke character, I got that people loved her character and probably the portrayer as a result.  But it’s been a long time since that’s really been the case.  I guess soap fans really are loyal and will stick with an actor sometimes just because they used to love the character 10 years ago.  I’ve come to think of both Kelly Monaco and Christel Khalil as fine, but I don’t at all get the level of fandom they inspire.

The last time I even remotely liked the character of Elizabeth was during Lucky’s death. After that they stopped developing the character and more often than not she was written as a selfish, lying shrew.   In fact it was so bad that there was a period of time we didn’t even see Elizabeth and then suddenly after having not had a major storyline for years she’s suddenly a nurse, when she had never once mentioned going to nursing school. Last we had heard she had dropped out of art school.

Personally, I would like Rebecca Herbst to stay. Elizabeth is the only major character left on the show who is still working at GH.

But the question is, what does Herbst want? Given the poor writing at GH, it would be understandable if she wanted a change.

The writers have not been kind to the character of Elizabeth. She was really fun to watch during her first few years on the show. I’ve never understood why they cannot write for her. She should be written as a character with a lot of rooting value.

If she leaves, I do not see any point in recasting. But they probably will.

That’s a great point.  I do wonder what Herbst wants.  The writing for Elizabeth is surely an issue, but it’s a little hard to believe she’d be better off at DAYS overall.  For a while, the show was changing writing regimes on an annual basis, and almost never has been kind to the newer actors as they transition from one regime to the next.

Yes, it is hard to believe she would be better off at Days. One, because they do not have a great track record for making use of big-name stars from other shows. And two, because even if the role catches on, it would probably be a smaller role than the one she plays on GH.

That said, I think sometimes actors just need a change. For example: from the perspective of many audience members, Billy Miller and Michelle Stafford were better off at Y&R. Yet both seem happier at GH. Who knows what goes on behind the scenes.

I think career wise Herbst would be wise to stay at GH, but if she does leave I guess DOOL is an ok choice for her.   I think that B&B doesn’t do well with new characters, and Y&R is already too crowded cast-wise.   She’ll never get a role as big as Elizabeth anywhere else; even if she has been on the side lines for too long.

Now if they do recast Elizabeth, who would you like to see take on the role?

A known actress or an unknown?    I honestly can’t think of anybody else who has the same blend of bitchy and innocent that Herbst brings to Elizabeth.    Because while Elizabeth is technically supposed be a heroine she is oftentimes the most annoying and self-obsessed character on the show.
