I’m sure many online will be happy about this. I for one think it’s a real shame. I admit his writing can be inconsistent but I’ll always give him credit for writing for more than 4 characters and for giving such strong material to women over 40. There’s no way we’d be seeing so much of Jane Elliot, NLG, Finola Hughes, Jackie Zeman or Genie Francis with Guza in charge. Plus all the strong material he gave to Robin Strasser & Erika Slezak at OLTL.

    I’m surprised by this news.

I have generally been critical of Carlivati’s work on GH, but want to acknowledge that when he was good, he was great.  The problem IMO was that his corresponding lows were really low.  The new team has a history of generally running a more even course, and I think GH will really benefit from that.

But Jean Passanante is responsible for the mess that was ATWT(and PG letting her ruin it so they can get out of soap business). I wonder what her writing will be like. We know she liked to break up power couples and have them shove their relationships with other in each others faces(just like she did Carjack) and make love triangles involving her favorite pets(Meg).

Expect Karen to come back from the dead and Sonny and Franco to be chasing after her, while Carly and Sonny are broken apart just like Carjack.

This is good for Carly and Ava though.

I just saw this on SOD and was very surprised.  Sure, a lot of people here and elsewhere have been complaining a lot about the writing of the show for a while now, but I just always thought of it more as a plea for RC to pull it together rather than a call for him to be ousted.  I remember not thinking much of Passanante’s work on ATWT, but I’m not going to let that impact my opinion of what happens here.  Both women are familiar with soaps and with GH, so it could be good.

As much as I criticized Carlivati, both on this show and on OLTL, I did like a lot of the things he did, which made the things I didn’t like about his work especially frustrating.

I’ll also say, while it may be true that Elliot, Grahn, Hughes, Zeman and Francis are getting more screentime than they would be under Guza (I’m not saying I agree or disagree with that), the case could be made than any or all of them, along with Laura Wright and Michelle Stafford, have been underutilized or misued for quite a while now.

SOD says Altman and Passanante will take over on August 10, but I’m not sure if that’s an airdate or a start-work date.  It would be pretty funny if their material started airing before the new writers at DAYS, which has been talking about their new headwriters since February.

Not the best decision, by any means… Jean & Shelly are both solid, with much awards hardware under their belt but NEITHER of them have proven they can successfully lead a show (see: Another World, ATWT, Y&R)

Mad respect for Ron. He had many falters as of late, but when he was good, he was awesome. He & Frank together saved this show from cancellation and quickly resurrected it across the board. Wish him all the best.

Well, I am sorry to hear this news. While I have been frustrated by some of Ron’s storytelling choices, his writing did get me watching again after a lapse of more than a decade. He did some good work on GH and I would have preferred to see him turn it around himself rather than being replaced. I wish him all the best, and extend the same good wishes to Jean and Shelly (I just pray that they do not make Sonny the main character of the show).

Also, I’d like to give a shout-out to the wonderful posters here on Gold Derby Daytime TV for their thoughtfulness and insight, as well as for keeping their comments in good taste rather than resorting to the harsh personal attacks I have seen on other message boards. Thanks for staying classy. Smile

Carlavati showed new blood could be really succesful and good for a Sustained period of time! You don’t have to keep recycling all the old writers.

With the show at record low ratings in the key demo all quarter (It’s been up slightly the last two weeks but is still under even the level AMC was at pre -cancellation.) something had to eventually give. A lot of the promising storylines they have tend to falter completely given time and there are so many characters played by talented actors that are either totally irredeemable in any logical way or close to irredeemable. It’s time to start fresh and maybe clean house a little.

What I really don’t understand about Jean & Shelly’s appointment is WHY we this industry insists on recycling the same writers and passing them for show to show year after year. JFP is fired from GH, moves to Y&R. Josh Grifftith fired from Y&R, hired at DAYS. Jean moves from GH to Y&R, then fired, and back to GH with Shelly. One of the most polarizing ever, Dena Higleh resurfaces and is back, again, at DAYS. It’s truly mind boggling. Why not seek out the acclaimed old schoolers; Sally Sussman Morina or Claire Labine or Hogan Sheffer? Jean & Shelly just seem safe bets for GH and it could really go either way… At least Frank is staying at EP.

^^  Great points.  Hiring one of those old schoolers should be an obvious course of action, and any of those three would have been a huge step in the right direction for GH.
I also agree that Jean & Shelly was the safe choice, and I can see why they chose the safe route considering that soaps are on shaky ground.  I would consider Carlivati to be polarizing, like Higley and/or Pratt, so replacing him with another polarizing figure would not have given GH the stability that (I assume the network thinks) it needs.  And considering that Days and Y&R are in the turbulent hands of Higley and Pratt, respectively, Jean & Shelly as a contrasting low-risk option was probably and easy proposal to sell.

I honestly thought he would be there until the end of the series.
