Simialar to robbalto’s GH post, I thought it would be fun to do a soaps wish list for 2015, including

Three Characters We’d Like to See More Of
Three Characters We’d Like to See Less Of
A Trend from 2014 That Should Continue
A Trend from 2014 That Should End
    A Story We’re Excited For
A Story That Needs to End Forever
and One “In A Perfect World” Scenario

I’m thinking about what mine would be for DAYS and GH.

3 characters/more of: Molly, Tracy, Heather, Brad & Lucas, GH (o.k., that’s five!)

3 characters/less of: Sonny Corinthos, GH; Liam, B&B; Shawn, GH

Trend to continue: great guest stars such as Meredith Baxter and Donna Mills (but keep them on permanently!)

Trend to discontinue: storylines that never end (“Fluke”, for example)

Story I’m excited for: Sonny/Paul/Will triangle – where is it going? What will happen?

Story that needs to end: King Sonny and the endless mob wars on GH

“In a Perfect World” scenario: Alison Sweeney wins her long overdue first Best Actress in a Daytime Drama Series award for her stellar work as Samantha Brady on Days Of Our Lives! (:

I did one each for DAYS and GH:

    For DAYS

Characters I’d Like to See More: Kayla, Marlena, Hope

Characters I’d Like to See Less: Abigail, Ben, Daniel

Trend That Should Continue: Recurring characters and guest returns, which I think the show uses very effectively.

Trend That Should End: Blaming the DiMeras for everything.  As exciting as the EJ/Abigail affair was, it really bugged me that everyone in town basically assumed EJ had taken advantage of a vulnerable Abigail, when in fact the opposite was true.  This happens constantly.

Story I’m Excited For: Quite a few, actually, but I can’t deny I’m most looking forward to seeing what Kristen does during her next return.  It may be this show’s biggest weakness that Kristen’s presence and storylines are such an obvious strength.  It’s hard to think of anything else as being on that level.

Story That Needs to End: I don’t hate it, but the Jordan/Clyde stuff is the worst they’ve got right now.

In A Perfect World: Carrie comes back!  Of course.

    For GH

Characters I’d Like to See More: Lucas, Rosalie, Brad

Characters I’d Like to See Less: Sonny, Fluke, Ava (I know she’s popular but I generally can’t stand her)

Trend That Should Continue: Exciting surprises.  No show is better at thrilling the audience with a twist ending, surprise reveal or cliffhanger.

Trend That Should End: Solving every storyline with a psychopath or maniac.  There just seem like much more satisfying ways to climax these stories, but we usually get a very extreme person like Jerry Jacks or Faison getting involved to remind us that there are worse people than the PC residents who keep committing crimes and not going to jail (this happens to some degree on all shows and doesn’t bother me as much).  And the bounds of credibility are stretched beyond belief to involve them, from the returns from the dead to captive Heather somehow disarming and tying up Jordan.  This happens constantly.

Story I’m Excited For: I would have said Maxie/Nathan, but after that asinine New Year’s Eve debacle, I’ll switch it up and go with seeing what happens to Nina.  I still feel like there’s so much good stuff they could do with her character if they tone down the crazy.

Story That Needs to End: It hasn’t been getting much airtime lately, but still: Fluke.  At this point I’d be glad for it just to be over even without finding out who Fluke is.

In A Perfect World: Tracy wises up, kicks Fluke to the curb, worries about the real Luke but then says YOLO and regains control of ELQ (sorry, Michael, you’ll have to spend a few years learning from someone who actually knows how to do this).

Freeman and EmmyLoser, I loved your selections! I tried not to focus on the same ones, so as to avoid repetition.

Characters I’d Like to See More Of
GH: Lucas. Ryan Carnes has a natural, engaging screen presence. His character is connected to almost everyone in Port Charles.
Days: Kayla & Lucas. These two historical characters add a lot to the canvas. As played by Bryan Datillo and Mary Beth Evans, these two merit front-burner status.
Y&R: Jill. She is the only character that extends all the way back to the show’s inception. This is one of the few remaining  characters who might inspire my loyal viewership.

Characters I’d Like to See Less Of
Unfortunately, all my selections are from GH. I recently estimated that I would like to see the departures of 8 of the current 28 contract players. But for the sake of brevity, I will narrow it down to the three who I think are most hurting the show: Sonny, Franco, and Nina. Note that I do not wish for any actor to lose a job, and I am all for writing out characters and bringing back actors as new characters.

A Trend from 2014 That Should Continue
Character-based stories and conflicts. I think Days is the show that does this best. The writers really allow viewers to invest in characters, which raises the storytelling stakes more than surprises and gimmicks.

A Trend from 2014 That Should End
Recasting. When a high-profile character leaves, it’s time to begin telling new stories. Billy Miller, Burgess Jenkins, and Gina Tognoni would probably have been better-received as new characters.

    A Story I’m Excited For
GH: Rosalie’s Secret. TPTB have been teasing us for a long time with this one, which has raised my expectations exponentially. I have no idea as to the nature of her secret, but I am hoping that it will segue into some good, original storytelling in 2015. I am up for just about anything, as long as it is reality-based and isn’t tied to Helena Cassadine or Jerry Jacks.

A Story That Needs to End Forever
I would like to see GH and Y&R get out of their storytelling ruts. I am all for honoring history, but only if it is done in fresh and entertaining ways. GH needs to stop relying on silly super-villains from the 80s to drive story. Y&R needs to move forward as well. I feel like they are in a rut with characters such as Victor, Phyllis, and Sharon. The characters need to grow and move forward. I still find the show pretty boring in comparison to Days and GH. Bill Bell was constantly reinventing and refining Y&R when he was in charge; compare for example the show in 1973 to just ten years later in 1983.

Two “In A Perfect World” Scenarios
    1. All four soaps would strive to improve diversity, especially in terms of front-burner characters.
    2. One of the three big networks would be gutsy enough to introduce a reboot, spinoff, or all-new 30-minute east-coast soap.

Great ideas from everyone!  Here are mine:

Three characters I’d like to see more of:
Y&R’s Sage Warner. I’ve been in love with Kelly Sullivan since day 1 on GH.
Y&R’s Kelly Andrews.  I’d love to see Cady McClain try her hand at playing cray cray, and it looks like they’re going there.
GH’s Nina Clay.  Michelle Stafford is always a pleasure to see in action, and if done well, the silliness of what has already come for her character could be forgotten.
If I can be allowed to pick three who are currently not on the scene to return they’d be: Carrie Brady, Billie Reed, and Skye Quartermaine.  I would have picked Brenda Barrett, but I think the current regime would do a better job of writing Skye than Brenda.

Three characters I’d like to see less of:
Y&R’s Nick Newman.  I’m just tired of him, and sometimes I think Josh Morrow looks like he could use a (well deserved) break.
Y&R’s Chelsea Newman. She has no real identity or meaningful connections to town.
    GH’s Franco.

A trend from 2014 that should continue:
Big name guest stars in well written arcs (great idea Freeman!)

A trend from 2014 that should end:
Plastic surgery that makes a character completely unrecognizable.  Yes this has been going on for a while, but in this day and age it’s too far-fetched.  Even for soaps.

    A story I’m excited for:
B&B’s return of Brooke Logan.  KKL’s presence has been missed.

A story that needs to end:
All things Sharon Newman.  I categorize this as a story rather than character issue because it’s not the character herself but rather the plot twists at the expense of her integrity.  IMO she should be backburned for a while, and then reintroduced as the flawed heroine we (used to) love.

    In a perfect world:
Lorraine Broderick is cloned and writes all four remaining soaps.
