I thought it might be fun to create another thread to distract me from complaining about DAYS, and earlier I was thinking of the time on DAYS a few years ago when Sami caught then-husband Rafe in a passionate liplock with her sister Carrie (also married, to Austin), and they repeatedly tried to calm Sami by explaining that they had just been celebrating helping a client and got carried away.  I always thought that was hilarious, but with all the plot twists, paternity reveals, torrid affairs, grief sex and surprise pregnancies that happen in soaps, some of the excuses the characters come up with have been truly terrible.

The excuse above is pretty thin, but one of the worst I remember being used was Drucilla sleeping with Malcolm while high on cold medicine on Y&R.  What other excuses that have been used were really funny or just plain outlandish?

The excuses that get me the most are the ones that ostensibly justify public shaming. For example, on GH, Carly hijacked the Nurse’s Ball last year to denounce Ric. I cannot imagine anyone behaving in this manner.

I always found it funny when Brooke and Bill became a couple on B&B that they acted like they had to because Katie encouraged it, as if they didn’t have any choice in the matter.  I loved when Katie mocked them about that later by removing her wedding ring in front of them to see if they would spontaneously sexually combust.  I think those scenes were part of Heather Tom’s 2014 Emmy reel.

As a throwback to AMC, in 2009 when Liza came back to town as a lawyer and was defending Annie, the two of them were discussing strategy.  They came to the conclusion that they could not use “temporary insantity” as a defense again, because using it repeatedly would imply the insanity was not actually temporary.  The way MCE delivered that line was hilarious and the memory has stayed with me to date.

Oh wow, so many of them…

I’ll do B&B since I don’t have access to the others.

Nick comforting Brooke when they thought that Ridge was dead and then having sex… I mean, come on, you have this nicely acted scene from KKL and Wagner playing devastated – end of the episode – and then we learn that they apparently had sex afterwards. It didn’t make sense and it only happened since writers wanted a triangle and paternity test question between them and couldn’t handle it any other way.

I think Brooke and Stephanie endlessly sabotaging each other at press conferences is hilarious. I wish real life press conferences were always this way in real world that something trashy happens. Alas, it isn’t.

Eric dumping Jackie for Stephanie because that was the wish of dying Felicia… Grown up woman, I mean.

Haha, these are great.  I would guess that B&B’s Brooke would be the queen of ridiculous excuses considering how many ridiculous trysts she’s had over the years.  The Liza/Annie one on AMC made me laugh out loud.  I also hadn’t thought about how ridiculous many of the instances of public shaming are.

Another great/ridiculous one was how DAYS fostered the Hope/Bo/Billie love triangle in the 90s.  Hope kept saying she needed to know that she was the only woman in Bo’s heart, so she basically made Bo date Billie while she distanced herself so he could prove his feelings.

For me it’s the more general problem of Victor on Y&R and Sonny on GH always being the winners (at least eventually). It’s irritating and makes me want to tune out from soaps (but I am such a  hopeless addict!)

For me it’s when for the sake of narrative expedience on GH people who are clearly NOT family are receiving medical information about patients who are again NOT family and no one ever gets reprimanded or fired!

Nora on OLTL used to blame Lindsay for pretty much every crime in town, even when Lindsay had zero connection to the case.    I used to find it funny how anytime a crime happened, Nora instantly blamed Lindsay.   One example, Lindsay is on trial for Colin McIver’s murder, and Nora is cross-examining her and suddenly remembers that SHE commited the crime, not Lindsay.

On GH, Sonny’s excuse that AJ being a Quartermaine and alchoholic made him a bad father, while Sonny, a mobster was a good role model because he was in love with Carly.   Basically anybody that was against Sonny or Carly suddenly was a villain.

LOL at Nora remembering that she killed Colin while cross-examining Lindsey!  I miss Catherine Hickland.
