I’ve been away from soaps for a while — I watched the AMC finale, the last few OLTLs, and an episode or two of GH — so I just thought I’d start a thread to get a general assessment from those who are still watching the soaps. What’s good? What’s bad? What’s controversial? What characters have been newly assassinated?
I heard B&B has just discovered gay people. Is DAYS’s Will having sex with anyone? I should rephrase that last question: Any guy-on-guy love scenes featuring Chandler Massey?
Also, I wanted to mention that I will be conducting the Goldie Awards this year. I’ll try to get that started by the end of the month, but I haven’t forgotten about them.
But until then, how are things in daytime going?April 15, 2012 at 8:56 am #422241
GH: … Sonny is on trial again, and is probably actually innocent this time around.
That’s always been one of the problems with the Sonny storylines. He’s a violent criminal, but they only ever seem to put him on trial for the crimes he didn’t actually commit, so they can keep making him out to be a persecuted martyr.April 16, 2012 at 8:10 am #422242
I’ve really only been watching DAYS, and gdfl summed it up quite well. I think recent years had kind of softened Stefano, but now it seems he’s been revilified into the total nightmare the Bradys and Hortons have always pained him to be. I’m interested to see where that goes. As far as Will is concerned, he hasn’t been having any sex at all since that first and only time with Gabby like a year ago. Chandler Massey said in an interview recently that Will didn’t have any romantic scene in the near future (the next couple of months I guess), and the character has really just been dealing with coming out. There have been some longing looks and lingering hugs with him and Sonny, but right now Sonny’s just playing a mentor role.
As I said, I haven’t been watching any other soaps, but my dad is reinvested in GH with the regime change. He dropped the show when news of OLTL’s impending cancellation broke, and then just tuned in basically to see the crossover characters, but he’s totally sucked back in now. He’s loving Kate’s DID story.April 16, 2012 at 12:25 pm #422243
He’s loving Kate’s DID story.
It’s pretty much the best storyline airing right now.April 16, 2012 at 2:08 pm #422244
B&B: The candy of daytime. Living for Steffy Forrester “cha cha cha” and all.
DAYS: Appreciate the effeort MarDar did w/the slow pace storytelling, but from what have been spoiled they fell into that trap that every writer on this show does and that is retconing previous stories. There’s no need to mess w/EJ paternity, but alas.
GH: FINOLA HUGHES & ROBIN MATTSON! That is all.
Y&R: . . .May 2, 2012 at 1:50 pm #422246
With Goldie Awards ballots starting to come in, I found myself wanted to jump back into soaps, at least for a day, so I watched at least part of all four remaining soaps today. My thoughts:
Y&R – Watchable. A scene with Genie Francis and Stephen Nichols, which was fine I guess. People talking about Laura and Stefan (or whatever they’re called now, LOL) illegally purchasing Beauty of Nature. Jack and Victor still don’t like each other. Jack is in a wheelchair — that sort of thing is funny to see out of context. Victor hired some tweenage lawyer; was that Heather, or a different tweenage lawyer?
Most important, I think, there was a really hot guy serving drinks in the background of a coffee shop scene. I think Diane Jenkins’s son was supposed to be in the foreground? Maybe I have that wrong. Either way, I kinda wanted them to cut away to the hot guy serving drinks.
DAYS – Ugh. I can’t fairly judge the show as a whole because I only made it through about ten minutes. I gave up after Bo and John found a bomb wired to their home security system, so they couldn’t open doors or windows, and their phones were jammed so they couldn’t call anyone. It was so silly I switched back immediately to Y&R. Is this kind of idiocy common since the return of John Black? John was always the worst part of DAYS when he was on before. Elsewhere, I saw that EJ is apparently not Stefano’s son, and Sami and Lucas are hooking up again.
B&B – Not bad, but a rather uneventful episode. On first glance, I liked the girl playing Hope in her scene telling Liam that she was through with drugs; her performance seemed more natural and had more confidence and conviction than the other young women in today’s episode. Steffi talking about her deep connection with Liam after she was injured skiing was pretty cringe-worthy. Nothing much else going on except the adult characters standing around talking about the young’uns.
GH – My favorite show of the day. Connie and Carly’s fight was ridiculous, but the right kind of ridiculous. Olivia and Elizabeth gossiping through the hospital was equally silly and fun. Most people seem to dislike Starr since she moved over to GH, but I thought she was just fine in her scene today with Johnny; going back to OLTL, I think Valentini and Carlivati’s biggest mistake was forcing Starr to grow up too fast. Teen motherhood, tons of tragedy — they sapped her of the mischevious fun that made her so compelling as a child on the show and turned her into a tragic heroine. Sonny’s scene with Michael (while John McBain listens) was a nonstarter. Kelly Monaco was excellent in her scene with Jason, explaining that her baby is Franco’s and not his.
That last scene highlights something unintended. The conservatism of daytime soaps is shocking sometimes. Apparently, Sam was unwillingly impregnated by a psychopath, yet the conversation is all about whether Jason can love the child, and abortion is never raised as a possible option. I don’t know how the baby was conceived exactly, but clearly Sam didn’t want or intend to conceive a child with Franco, so this seems to be the moral equivalent of a rape pregnancy. Recently, Rick Santorum said that women should consider a rape baby a gift from God and he was rightly pilloried for it. Would anyone be offended if Sam terminated a pregnancy after being unwillingly knocked up by a psycho?May 2, 2012 at 3:04 pm #422247
Daniel, a couple of points, just by way of explanation:
I think GH’s Sam has fertility issues? I thought a while back it was said that she couldn’t or was very unlikely to get pregnant. I know she then got pregnant, but I think that plays into the situation somewhat. But you’re right, women on soaps rarely consider abortion, not that there haven’t been a few in recent years, like GH’s Lulu and DAYS’ Mimi.
I said this is the DAYS thread, but I’ll say it again here: The story with John/Hope/Bo/Marlena and Stefano is my least favorite playing out right now. But I’d hardly call it idiotic. All those characters are trapped in what was supposed to be a safehouse that was sabotaged by Stefano, which is why communication signals are jammed and they can’t leave the house without it exploding. It’s also a shame that this is what you happened to see because it’s completely atypical of the kinds of stories the show’s been doing.
As we all know from the Emmys, watching one episode or part of one episode rarely gives a good indication of the overall quality of a show, so I hope those opinions don’t form too strongly.May 2, 2012 at 4:32 pm #422248
Not to worry, I’m not judging any of the shows by what happened today, I just thought it would be fun, as an outsider who was once an insider, to revisit soaps and make my immediate observations. That DAYS scene in the cabin, though, made my eyes roll so hard I almost sprained them. Drake Hogestyn is so self-serious when explaining their ludicrous calamity. I wish someone in that scene had had a sense of humor.
One thing I notice that I didn’t when I was a regular watcher: Too much exposition. The writers probably think it’s helpful for casual watchers or people like me who aren’t up to date on the current storylines, but I just find it annoying when characters awkwardly summarize recent events in the middle of their dialogue.May 3, 2012 at 7:43 am #422250
Drake Hogestyn, still hilarious after all these years. Yes, now that I’ve seen it, that little sum up of their situation was a bit much. I’m also frankly a little annoyed that this is the story they use to anchor the first week of May sweeps, but if it produces some movement on the Rafe/Carrie front, I guess I’ll take it. And I get the feeling (from Twitter) that a lot of fans are enjoying it.May 6, 2012 at 8:39 pm #422251
LMBO at the tweenage lawyer w/your Y&R synopsis. That is Phyllis insta sister.June 3, 2012 at 4:33 pm #422252
Just finish watching all of the acting tapes (minus Genie Francis) for the Emmys and man it was a battle and I have battle wounds. I do have to say the men had the strongest material and made the tasking task less bearable. All of the women nominated are talented, but the material they were given were either decent soap story or unbearable cliche (the younger actress category was the almost breaking point). I am not going to wishful think for better material, b/c it seems like soaps are still in their confort zone. I will hope that the ones who will be able to transition after daytime, will get the material to flex their acting muscles.
Next up will be writing and drama series (when I get the opportunity).
As for the thread, I am dissapointed that B&B is being B&B by already wrapping up the Deacon story, b/c Sean Kanan on that show seems just right and there SO MUCH STORY there (was hoping for a Steffy pairing). GH is meh. I don’t look at Y&R, but will see Jen Landon’s debut as Heather and tune in to see the new teen set. DAYS might keep me around for a bit thanks to that great Friday episode.June 7, 2012 at 11:59 pm #422253
Think I might have to do brief recaps of my predix instead of full analysis this year. This might be me smelling myself, but sorry to those who might have been looking forward to it. Life is cray right now lol.
