Y&R is starting to pick up. Although I did not initially enjoy the Cane story, it is getting more interesting. I like it because, although Cane is innocent as charged, kharma is biting him in the butt as his own (terrible) actions set all this in place. Kudos to the writers for providing a payoff to this carefully mapped story.
The story with Dina is somewhat interesting, but I’m not sure where (if anywhere) the story is headed.
Scott is growing on me. I liked when he said something to the effect that Abby and the semi-colon are not on the best of terms. I love that kind of witty writing.
Hilary is really going over the top with her scheming. I love her scenes with Lily and Mariah.
I too was surprised by Greg Rikaart’s departure, given the fact that he is an excellent actor (with an Emmy Award and numerous nominations). I suppose they needed to make some cuts and were faced with tough decisions, since almost everyone under contract to the show has won or been nominated for an Emmy.
I still feel like the show lacks that must-see quality, probably because I have come to dislike the hour-long format. The show just seems to lumber along. I have watched Y&R since its inception, so I am predisposed to investment, but I would describe my investment as moderate at this point.
Freeman, you know I agree about the East Coast soaps. What I wouldn’t give for reboots of As the World Turns, Guiding Light, Ryan’s Hope, The Edge of Night, The Doctors, etc.June 19, 2017 at 4:31 pm #1202126492
I think Dina’s story is that she has another child – who we saw briefly – who will be a half-brother to Ashley, Jack and Traci. at least that is how I interpreted those scenes (I may have missed an episode or two that explained it better?).
Some episodes of Y&R are more compelling than others. Depends on which characters/actors they use on any given day as far as I am concerned.June 21, 2017 at 10:43 am #1202128717
I’ve been enjoying the Cane story the most. I’m glad they brought Leslie back. I always liked her. I’m glad the writers didn’t forget about Nikki’s ms. I’m hoping her story will be good. The whole Dina/Graham story is weird to me. I’m assuming Graham is her son. I’m just glad it’s giving the Abbotts a family storyline. I’m hoping Gloria will go after Graham. That could make for some fun scenes.
While the quality of the show has gone up (I’m glad the stories are more character driven/family based), there’s still something missing. I wish there was more romance and date scenes. I wish Paul and Christine were involved more and whatever happened to Jill? I know Jill had some heart problem and I was hoping it was going to turn into a story for her. Instead, she disappears (in fairness, I don’t watch every show, so they probably explained where she went).June 22, 2017 at 3:54 am #1202129644
I think the father and son we saw briefly are Dina’s other family and that is one of her secrets; I also think she must be dying too, with all this will talk going on. I don’t think Graham is her son, no.
They have been giving short stories to long-term characters and then ending the stories quickly. Lauren had a storyline, Jill had a storyline, but both were dropped fairly quickly. All the soaps do this to some extent or another as a way to solve a “problem” of vets vs. newbies – they care more about the younger newbies but audiences by and large prefer the vets.
I have been enjoying the show immensely and it is currently my favorite, which I did not think would ever be possible.June 26, 2017 at 2:13 pm #1202133923
I loved the Gloria and Graham scenes in the sauna. I’m glad Gloria talked about not being a good mother and being absent. Graham talked about being from the Midwest and coming from a good family until it became broken. I hope we get to see more of them together.
It seems like we’re seeing more characters per episodes and the characters are interacting with different ones throughout the episode, which is nice.June 29, 2017 at 9:54 am #1202136695
I wonder if Billy Miller will return to Y&R or will JT stay in the role? Or, will they keep Billy on GH? The drama of it all! (;
I have been so enjoying Y&R lately. There is no particular story that is keeping me interested, more just good writing and wonderful actors getting opportunities to do some of their best work.
Who else thinks Nikki will have a breakdown during the concert? (my best female friend has MS and I wish they would do a more realistic story with Nikki’s MS).July 5, 2017 at 1:16 pm #1202142652
Dopey Kevin leaves the gun where the villain can get to it );
Cane finally gets fired! (it’s about time!)
I don’t usually like Lily/Christel but she has been rocking her scenes the past several weeks…
Do we know if Juliet was with anyone besides Cane?July 5, 2017 at 2:49 pm #1202142724
Y&R has been really good lately! I have fallen behind on the other shows, but I stay up-to-date on Y&R. They are doing a very good job of telling character-driven stories that are based in reality and have a payoff for the viewer.
I find the lawsuit story especially interesting in that neither Cane nor Juliet have been totally honest. My impression from the beginning was that Cane did not have sex with Juliet; she was an opportunist and used the incident to manipulate him. I think eventually it will come to light that they did not have sex and that Cane is not the baby’s father.July 26, 2017 at 1:37 pm #1202165865
For years, it seems, I have been reading viewer complaints about Cane and Lily. The usual criticism is that they are boring. Well, at last, we have found a writing team that solved the problem. Cane and Lily have been front and center, and the storyline has been compelling.
In fact, I am enjoying pretty much the entire show now. The writing is more realistic and down-to-earth than any of the other soaps.
The only character that does not fit for me is Phyllis. Her presence just seems very forced.
In order for the show to survive, I think the writers need to ramp up the storytelling in the 20-to 30-something age group.July 27, 2017 at 5:15 am #1202166419
Is Hunter King (Summer) completely gone from the show? haven’t seen her in ages (and am glad of it, since I don’t like her).
I am especially enjoying Marla Adams as Dina. I am so glad they brought her back.
I missed what happened between Victor, Kevin and Chloe. How did those scenes end the other day? Did the storyline die with a whimper?July 31, 2017 at 6:15 pm #1202170923
Wow, the walls are really closing in on Cane! The story just gets better all the time! Loved it when he called Victoria a “stone cold bitch.”
Hunter King is recurring, so perhaps she will turn up in the future. But I think the priority of the writing team is driving story for the vets and current contract players.
I really hope they don’t bring back Adam. It’s time to move on. And Cane’s storyline is a perfect example of the good that can come from focusing on other characters instead of dredging up played-out characters like Adam and Phyllis.
I think there may be more story for Kevin. It ended with Victor leaving them in the hotel. It didn’t seem like a final episode for Kevin and Chloe.August 3, 2017 at 7:19 pm #1202174047
Wow at the ending of Y&R today! Between the growing storyline for Mariah and the ongoing saga of Cane, this show has my full attention right now! I am excited that Camryn Grimes is getting an important story. She is my favorite!
I was thinking, it’s too bad that the writers did not keep Cane as the real Phillip Chancellor. It would have tied him and his family to the show’s history in a more meaningful way. Bringing on the original Phillip was a good stunt, but did not drive much story in the long run.
Enjoyed the scenes with Peter Bergman and Melody Thomas Scott. They are so natural together, as they have fully inhabited their respective characters. And I love when soaps take a break from the OTT drama to focus on character development. It’s fun to watch the vets make magic out of quaint,down-to-earth scenes.August 4, 2017 at 11:49 am #1202174734
Soaps hardly ever surprise me but the smooch between Mariah and Tessa did surprise me. This could be really interesting – I do wish Tessa was more compelling but I choose to see this as an opportunity for Camryn to shine!August 4, 2017 at 5:54 pm #1202175068
Today’s episode and another surprise ending! What is up with Victoria?!?August 7, 2017 at 6:27 pm #1202177876
Loved the show today, but one small issue: Victoria would never have stopped at the bar for coffee. She would have left as quickly as possible so that she could take a shower and change her clothes. In the long run, it’s not a big deal, but details make a difference in terms of credibility and integrity.
