Even Stevens received a total of 7 Emmy nominations from 2001-2003. Shia LaBeouf won an Emmy for playing Louis Stevens in 2003. Donna Pescow was nominated three times for playing Eileen Stevens in 2001, 2002, and 2003. The show was nominated for Outstanding Children’s Series from 2001 to 2003. Did the show, Donna Pescow and Shia LaBeouf deserve Emmy recognition?
I can’t say since I’ve never seen it before, but I will say, that I recall the series was extremely popular and did fantastic in the ratings. I think that coupled with Shia’s rising star at the time were a big factor in it’s success. It also had Disney money behind it and that helps a lot.
I was at Disney Channel when the show was being developed. Originally, it was called something like “Spivey” and was much more focused on the Shia character, who as I recall was trying to become a kid stand-up comic. I remember one day in a conference room, they brought Shia in to meet several of us, and he began to do his thing. From the get-go, we all realized that this kid was really talented-bordering-on-obnoxious — not in a bad way, but in the way that Robin Williams can sometimes be. They eventually developed it into a more family-centric comedy that became “Even Stevens.” Donna Pescow gave a lovely performance, but it was nothing out of the ordinary, Shia’s performance, however, was.
Even Stevens was an excellent show much better that the drivel they tend to produce now with the sole purpose being the main character being or trying to get famous. These were shows that even my parents enjoyed watching.
