I’ve mostly expatriated from the world of soaps, but I’m curious if soaps have improved at all in this regard. Is DAYS’s Will the only major gay character? Is he or anyone else getting any, or still only allowed to be the chaste, virtuous gay?February 8, 2013 at 8:13 pm #423634
There has been some improvement, even to the point of showing love scenes between two men (ATWT and OLTL) but I will admit more can be done.February 8, 2013 at 9:37 pm #423635
The only soap I’ve watched much of for the past year is DAYS, where I’d say the gay characters are getting equal treatment. There are Will and Sonny, who have mostly been a couple but both of whom have had other love interests in the past year. There have been a few Will and Sonny love scenes, mostly highlighting their first few times together, and they got the typical soap treatment with spending most of the episode kissing and undressing each other and then talking afterwards about how fantastic it was. The show hasn’t shied away from showing them in bed together. Since they broke up last month, Sonny has another love interest, a recurring character who was trying to get with Sonny before he and Will got together, and the two of them were in bed making out before Sonny decided he wasn’t ready to move on yet.
I can only speak to DAYS, but I’ve been pleasantly surprised at how equal opportunity they’ve been with everything, and I have no complaints.February 10, 2013 at 8:30 pm #423636
Everytime I turn on Days Sonny and Will are having sex so some things are improving 🙂
B&B has flirted with a lesbian story with Crystal Chappell and Joanna Johnson, but it hasn’t been a major focus.February 17, 2013 at 9:45 am #423638

I guess that means I’ll have to start watching “DAYS” again. [/quote]
Yeah, but Will slept with a girl and got her pregnant. So, things really aren’t improving if they’re still doing that same old story.February 17, 2013 at 7:42 pm #423639
Will spent a lot of time struggling to come to terms with being gay, like a lot of people do, and having him sleep with his ex-girlfriend after a particularly tough day may not have been all that original from a soap opera perspective, considering the outcome, but it was realistic and on top of that, it has now thrown Will and Sonny into a classic soap scenario. I HATED the idea of Will sleeping with Gabi when I read that it would happen, but the story made so much sense and felt so relatable that I changed my mind entirely. I would also be more critical of the story if Will were the only gay character on the show and he were just sleeping with girls left and right, but neither of those is the case.March 2, 2013 at 1:21 am #423640
The storyline that has resulted from a gay Will sleeping with Gabi and getting her pregnant, has blossomed into one of the best umbrella storylines that DAYS has had in sometime.
Many fans were PISSED with the idea of Will sleeping with Gabi, but the writers really put forward a great storyline that has pretty much encompassed the entire cast of characters and has far reaching consequences for all of them…not to mention the side stories it has created.
Who would have thought that the one soap that resisted showing anything having to do with gays/lesbians ect for years while every other soaps bumped that trend, would end up doing the best storytelling in that same regard. And for a soap that has a HUGE percentage of conservative viewers, that was very risky…but its paying off big time right now for the show.
