Daytime has had many characters over the years that shared the name Carly, but my question is, in your opinion which of them is going to stand in history as Daytime’s all-time Ultimate Carly? The most memorable, most legendary, most whatever…

SJB Carly FTW! Utter brilliance. Then it would be Laura’s Carly for carrying the torch beautifully in spite of the dreck she’s been giving by both regimes. Then Maura’s Carly as a nice third. Loved her on her own, but the CarJack pairing drove me insane! The final two is tortue. I find Crystal Chappell to be overrated and Tamara Braun was more of a “star” as opposed to an “actress” as Carly. I agree that her post GH work was when I became a fan and found her captivating to watch.

    1. Brown
    2. Wright
    3. West
    4. Braun
    5. Chappell

    Jennifer Bransford!

    Kidding, of course.

This is tough, because each Carly is so unique and special in her own way, and the actresses are all legendary.
Though I did not vote for her, I think the most memorable is Sarah Brown’s.  Brown came out of nowhere with legendary performances in very well written stories.  But because so much of that was circumstantial, she is not my personal favourite.
Maura West’s was certainly the most versatile; her character went through a lot of growth over the years yet always remained true to her essence, and West was incredibley entertaining every step of the way.  I voted for her.
Carly Manning is Crystal Chappell at her best.  A beautifully complex leading lady, but I would not say that she is the most memorably/legendary because she always seemed to be sacrificed unnecessarily for another character.
Carly Corinthos Jacks has her flaws and IMO they have all been in the writing.  She is unrecognizable at present, and during Guza’s term she was either written very well or very badly.  I think Laura Wright is one of Daytime’s finest and fans for the most part do respond well to her, which cements her place in Daytime history as this character.
Tamara Braun, IMO did her best work after she was no longer playing Carly.  I never could relate to her portrayal, but that’s not to say that it was bad, just that it did not connect with me personally.

    My rankings:
    1.  Maura West (Carly  Tenney)
    2.  Laura Wright (Carly Corinthos Jacks)
    3.  Sarah Brown (Carly Benson)
    4.  Crystal Chappell (Carly Manning)
    5.  Tamara Braun (Carly Corinthos)

You stated your viewpoint very well, and very succiently.   For the most part, I’d have to agree with you on all of this.    I think Braun is a talented actress, but yes, her version of Carly has almost never connected with me either.  If for no other reason than it seemed more like a different character to me.    It was such a stark transition from how the character had been written under Brown that it felt unnatural to Carly and felt more like a new character.

I also voted for Maura West/Carly Tenney.  I think of those three Carlys and the five actresses who played them, and there seemed like a unifying vibe to them, even though they’re all unique, and I think Carly Tenney captures that best.  She’s also, in my mind, the one who leaves the strongest impression, even though West isn’t my favorite actress of the group and Carly Tenney wouldn’t be my favorite Carly.

I’m going with the Carly who should still be on the air, and not that ridiculous Talk Show that replaced it.  ATWT’s Carly Tenney.

Didn’t see any of Crystal Chappell on DAYS, so I’ll rank the other four:

    1. Sarah Brown, GH
A couple of good recasts, but she’s still the gold standard for me.

    2. Maura West, ATWT
    3. Laura Wright, GH
    4. Tamara Braun, GH

All of the women in this poll were nominated for an Emmy for playing Carly (3 won). Has anyone else ever been nominated for playing a character named Carly?

Peggy McKay has been nominated for lead and supproting for playing Caroline Brady. And Christie Clark was nominated twice for younger actress for playing Caroline “Carrie” Brady.

But to answer your, no since we are going off of “Carly”.

Are there any other Carlys?  I thought we rounded them up pretty well.

I’ll go with Maura West. Her Carly got a little old at times, but she’s a fabulous actress and she played that character for all she’s worth. Its too bad Y&R threw her out like a sack a potatoes.

Laura Wright destroyed Carly. Her version has tainted all the others.

    Thanks!

It’s funny how popular that name is with soap writers. Actually, on the soap opera I’ve been writing on and off for years, I created a “Carly” character as a tribute to all the Carlys in daytime TV.

Daniel, great article, I’m glad my poll topic could inspire you to write an article.

As for Carly (on GH), I believe WRITING has been what has ruined this character.   Because they changed the character each time it was recast she has not had the chance to be a consistant character.    Sarah Brown and Tamara Braun may as well have been playing different characters, because they had little to no resemblance writing wise.     over the years much of what made Brown’s Carly work has been stripped away and reduced to a bite-sized piece.   There is no longer that mix of arrogance, vulnerbility and desperate need to prove herself as important.     She has been reduced to a whining, selfish shrew.
