This is the first post I’ve created on the newsite.  I am an old-school Goldderby who joined in 2002 as Gracefan if anyone remembers me.  When the new site came along, I changed it to Pujolsfan (seems more relevant if you follow baseball).  Nonetheless, I felt compelled to start this discussion because everywhere I look there seems to be a lot of unwavering support for certain actors who were nominated this year.  However, I don’t think popularity will propel some of these “faves” to the podium come Emmy night.

Naturally, this is only my opinion, and I want to be clear with everyone that I love, love, love Eileen Davidson, Billy Miller, and Jane Elliot.  I’ve followed Davidson since the early 1980s when she was relatively new to Y&R as my precious Ashley Abbott.  I remember her fondly as a miscast Kelly Capwell on Santa Barbara at the end of its run, and I, like many of you, became completely captivated by her tour de force work on Days of Our Lives during the mid-to-late 1990s.  I championed her a Best Actress nod in 1997 and was excited that she finally made the cut in 1998, but we all knew Cynthia Watros was the favorite to win that year.

I first remember seeing Jane Elliot on Knots Landing.  Then she was Cynthia Courtlandt on AMC, and I’ll never forget her and Wally Kurth in bed together as Anjelica Deveraux and Justin Kiriakis on Days of Our Lives.  I loved her on The City believing she was more entertaining than Morgan Fairchild (and certainly a better actress).  I’ve always been a fan, but no more so than when Tracy became a mother for Lulu Spencer.  This is where Elliot shines for me.  She’s good at being bad.  She’s good at being mad.  But she shines when she shows Tracy’s compassion (anyone remember last year when Edward died?).  This woman is an icon in my book and should always be a fixture on daytime television (same with Davidson).

Billy Miler is my husband.  Enough said.

I’d be very happy if either Davidson, Elliot or Miller won.  But after watching the tapes and reading other thoughts on what was submitted, I really believe that the darker horses will prevail this year as opposed to those who are the popular choices.  Keep in mind that this is the Daytime Emmys and they are often very unpredictable.

With that said, I am wondering how people around here are going to take it someone other than Miller wins Best Actor.  Will people turn on Liz Hendrickson when she inevitable steals Jane Elliot’s elusive second Emmy?  Will there be a backlash toward Ari Zucker if she sneaks in and prevents veteran actress Davidson from picking up her first Emmy?

I just have a feeling that Miller wasn’t good enough in his tapes.  In real life he has no children, so it seemed like he had a difficult time acting around that.  He’s a great, gifted actor, but were these really his best tapes of 2013?  Davidson got plenty of scenery to chew on as Kristen, but will voters think she was a bit all over the place in those scenes?  Was Elliot robbed because people like me championed her to submit the “whole enchillada” episode which may have been too subdued?

I am going to remain optimistic and believe that Days will win 4 or 5 well-deserved Emmys (Series, Actress, Younger Actor, Writing and perhaps Supporting Actor). I love Ari just as much as Eileen, so that would be fine (what would be intolerable would be cry-baby Heather Tom winning yet another Emmy). As for Billy Miller, I am actually rooting for Jason Thompson, but felt that Billy Miller did better work in 2013 than he did. And yes, Jane Elliot is a must for me, but I don’t like Elizabeth Hendrickson’s reel at all (I believe she over-acted her scenes badly, but I am virtually alone in this opinion). I like most of the nominees this year. The real crime has already happened: NO Emmy for Greg Vaughan or Blake Berris for Supporting Actor ):

The thing about the Emmys for me is when my favorites do win it’s a big thrill and when they make mistakes, which they do often, there are usually some wonderful winners most years too….

Thanks for your take Freeman.  I think this year is very exciting.  Most of the nominees (some would argue all) are deserving nominees and many could easily win this year.  I would love for Davidson to win, but wouldn’t it be a hoot for KKL to finally win her Best Actress Emmy?  It’s doubtful after watching her reel, but you never know with the Emmys.  I would be glad if anyone but Heather Tom wins Best Actress, but if she does, you can’t deny she deserved it.  Bergman, Davidson, Miller and Thompson would all be alright picks for me in the Best Actor race, but I’m rooting for Davidson to repeat.

As I said above, I will be thrilled to pieces if the Academy picks Jane Elliot this year, but I truly believe Hendrickson’s tape was too gut-wrenching to ignore.  On the other hand, I campaigned heavily for Kelly Sullivan to earn a Best Actress bid for her work as Kate/Connie on GH and would be happy for her if she won.  Melissa Clare Egan is amazing in everything, and I certainly made public note of Amelia Heinle’s brilliant performance as a grief-stricken step-parent.  I would be happy for any of them.

It would be a kick to see Martsolf win after his horrendous performance from Passions.  Now that’s a comeback!  Anderson is deserving and has left GH which makes it even more poignant.  I would not prefer to see Clifton or Zamporagna win this year because I didn’t feel they deserved to win.  I am, however, thrilled for Dom’s first nomination.  Well deserved.

As for the younger actor category, I’d love to see Chandler three-peat.  Wouldn’t he be the first male actor to do so?  Bryan Craig was one of my favorite newcomers of 2013 and I would love to see him win.  Max Ehrich, Daniel Polo and Chad Duell are also very deserving in my opinion.  Younger Actress is harder for me.  I believe I picked Alderson to win after watching the tapes, but I felt Hunter King did a commendable job as put-upon Summer Newman.  Kim Matula is overdue.  Godfrey’s nod was a bit odd to me, but I can see her appeal.  And I loved Kelley Missal on OLTL.  That girl has a future.

I’d say as a person who is a longtime DAYS fan, I generally associate the Emmys with being disappointed.  It wasn’t until the last 10 years or so that I even understood how the system worked, or got much of a taste of other shows, so for me it was often just watching the show and being disappointed that no one I knew was even nominated, and those few who were never won.

Now that there’s so much more information available, and we can watch the reels, I usually watch what was submitted, and based on that kind of draw a line where these winners would be okay and these winners would not.  I still root for my favorites, of course, either based on history, the work for the year, or their submission, depending on the category and how things are looking.  But I know at the end of the day I have to respect those reels where winners are concerned.  So I put the possibility of wins into acceptable or not acceptable.  Last year, for example, I was not happy when Scott Clifton and Billy Miller tied to beat Bradford Anderson, who I thought definitely had the strongest reel, but I couldn’t complain too much because Clifton and Miller also had good reels that I thought made acceptable wins.  On the other hand, when someone wins that I did not think had a reel that made that acceptable, I tend to complain a lot.  The most obvious example is my endless complaining about Julie Pinson’s supporting actress win a few years ago.  I didn’t think her reel was very strong at all, and she beat out both Beth Chamberlain, who seemed a sentimental favorite and did have a strong reel, and Arianne Zucker, who had submitted my favorite performance I’d seen anyone give that whole year, the year of the big baby switch storyline.

This year, I’ve only gotten to half the reels so far, with lead actor and the supporting categories still waiting for me.  Still, I can say without seeing them I’d be happy for Jason Thompson, Jane Elliott, Elizabeth Hendickson, Bradford Anderson, or Eric Martsolf to win.  In Lead Actress, I am of course pulling for Eileen Davidson, and I like her reel best, but truly I felt all four ladies submitted deserving work and I couldn’t hold a grduge is any of them were to win.  I’d even be happy for Zucker or Lang.  Sorry, Heather Tom.  To me, both the younger categories should be two-horse races.  Younger Actor should come down to Chandler Massey or Chad Duell.  For me, those reels could be winners, while the other three are merely competitors.  I wouldn’t be surprised if Bryan Craig won, though, as people seem to enjoy his reel more than I did.  The rankings of the Younger Actress competitors is all over the place.  For me, Kim Matula and Kelley Missal shine much brighter than the other three, and I would be disappointed to see any of those three take the prize.  But no outcome there would really surprise me.  All of our rankings have been so different.

The real disappointment would be not having DAYS win writing and/or series.  Although we don’t really have all the reels in those categories, so I don’t know what to expect.

I know I’ll get a lot of flack for saying this, but the reason Days didn’t do well in the Emmy races was because they didn’t deserve to do well in the Emmy races.  Those nominated were relatively deserving.  Charlotte Ross, Christie Clark, Eileen Davidon, Jensen Ackles, Kyle Lowder, Molly Burnett, Rachel Melvin, Tamara Braun, Shelley Hennig, Suzanne Rogers, Peggy McCay, Deidre Hall, Crystal Chappell, Thao Penghlis, Peter Reckell, James Scott, Chandler Massey, Ari Zucker, Freddie Smith, Susan Flannery, Susan Seaforth, Bill Hayes, Ed Mallory, Joe Gallison, Jed Allan, John Clarke, Matthew Ashford, Judi Evans, Arlene Sorkin, Patrika Darbo, etc.  Those actors were nominated because they were good.  Days of Our Lives, especially beginning in the early 1980s, tried to immitate General Hospital with their supercouples and villains mixed with a lot of romance and adventure.  Days of Our Lives, at that point, failed to compare to more serious serials like All My Children or Ryan’s Hope or even Guiding Light and As the World Turns.  A lot of the actors were hired because they looked good, not necessarily because they were good actors.  I believe Days of Our Lives got the appropriate amount of attention with the actors who had given spectacular performances nominated.

As a fan, it’s sometimes hard to even see deserving versus not deserving in the grand scope of things, especially if you watch two shows out of 10 or 12.  I think I didn’t really start to feel like DAYS was being slighted until the late 90s, when the Kristen/Marlena story really got going, and Eileen Davidson missed out on that nomination in 1997.  From there, it became more a matter of DAYS’ history with the Emmys and it looking in retrospect like the show had been slighted for years, at least to me.
