    It’s official!

God’s speed is all I can really say since I am pretty much out of the soap game, besides reading here/other sites and the occasional viewing. I remember when MAB came on and everyone lost their collective shit (including me). There was promise w/her first year, but things went completely off the rails and given all of the rumors of her smelling her shit, this needed to happen in the end, but is it too late? As the soap saying goes, “you’ll have to tune in . . .”

I give JFP’s vision of Genoa City a shot.

I am not a fan of JFP but at this point it probably won’t make much of a difference. MAB basically killed and buried it. Y&R is so unrecognisable now- they should get rid of everybody but Jack, Victor, Nikki, Katherine, Jill, Sharon, Phyllis, Neil, and Lauren and do a reboot.

I just hope she doesn’t kill anybody off Frankie Frame/Maureen Bauer style!

I wonder why Genie wouldn’t be welcome back at GH?   I thought she was a generally well-respected actress?

Maybe she is just somebody that Valentini and Carvalati don’t respect? They do have a tendency to play favorites.

Michelle Stafford better be careful.   Jill hates women with red hair over 40.   Just ask Robin Strasser and Jackie Zeman. Both were promptly dismissed from their series when JFP took over. Perhaps Phyliss is on her way out of Genoa City?

I suspect that Genie Francis will be very quickly either fired or quit because she does not get along with Jill Farren Phelps. I can’t imagine this will be good for her.

Well, that pic of hers looks like a turkey in black. Seriously. An actual turkey.

I don’t think she’s unwelcome. I think they just see her as being tied up at Y&R and aren’t going to hold the stories hostage sitting around waiting for her to become available.

I got the impression that Frank was being polite but he really doesn’t care to have Laura back on the canvas.  She probably feels like an expense that doesn’t have a huge payoff, since they’ve got Luke and adding Laura back into the mix would either limit their storytelling possibilites or not have any benefit because fans would want to see her with Luke and be displeased that she isn’t.  I don’t think it’s personal.  It’s like when they bring Brenda back.  They have to put her in stories with Sonny and/or Jax.  They couldn’t bring Brenda in and just play her as a love interest for, say, Steve.  Laura would be in a similar boat.  That’s just my guess, of course.

And yes, it’s hard for me to imagine JFP will make Y&R worse.  And with a different headwriter from the EP, maybe having two bad-idea filters will keep fewer of the bad ideas from hitting the air.  JFP would be NUTS to get rid of Michelle Stafford, but if she did, I bet Stafford would be scooped up pretty past, either by B&B, GH or something outside of daytime.

In regards to Michelle Stafford, I was of course just being sarcastic… I’m sure she’s perfectly safe.

She actually comes across as younger than she really yes.

I do have hope that the genius that is Josh Griffith will be able to prevent some of the damage that Floppy Phelps typically brings with her.

As for Laura, I kind of feel like IF they wrote her return correctly; Laura could bring a real wallop back.   My thought is that Laura could finally be “officially cured” forever and return to town with new clarity and insight and hell-bent on putting her family back together.   I’d like to see her with an agenda of her own and with more of a backbone.  Perhaps they play her off as a bitter villian who resents all the things that have happened to her and kept her away from her kids?  Personally I’ll watch Genie read the phone book as Laura.

As for Brenda, I’d LOVE to see a story where Brenda ISN’T saddled with Sonny or Jax.    Once upon a time Brenda was a full-fledged character with a rich history and ambitions, dreams and ideas all her own.   Granted this was years ago… But I’d love to see Brenda return to town at some point and drive story of her own w/out those two.    Maybe she uses her wealth to buy the hospital or ELQ and this could put her in the direct line of numerous other characters.

I agree, actually, it is unfortunate to have Brenda always tied to the same stories, but I think that only happens because of the short-term returns.  It’s kind of like when you’re in the middle of something and get interrupted, and you have to bakctrack a little to find your place again before you can continue.  Brenda keeps getting interrupted, so she had to backtrack every time she returns to town before they can move her on to something else.

The love letter to MAB tone aside, this in an interesting read.

This is interesting, but I do find a lot of it hard to take at face value.  When there’s the claim that MAB wants to write for veterans, I have to assume they mean veterans of other shows.  It’s not like she’s averse to brining in new characters and actors, and slighting Y&R’s actual veterans, either in terms of airtime or story quality, to do so.  She’s just mostly bringing in people who are outside the demographic that Sony apparently cares about.  The 40-year audience that she’s supposedly so respectful of must just be loving Victor and Sharon getting married.  And Sony, after all, did make a power play to get Eileen Davidson, over 50 now, onto DAYS, so I don’t believe they are just blindly looking for under 30s.

But I do think the article leads to a relevant discussion about veterans vs. new blood.  I’m not advocating cutting all the vets on Y&R or any show, but at the same time, you have to make room for new blood, too.  Some shows have gotten into a rut of prizing veterans and treating the younger characters as too expendable, and might be starting to feel a little too old.

That was funny EmmyLoser re. MAB writing for vets from other shows. And as much grief as the woman gets, my beef is what she did at OLTL, Dena Higley is one of the few HW from recent times (Ron C. is the other) that got it right w/the telling of stories for everyone on the canvas. Though some of the story ranged from good to bad, she and her team did utilized that cast. And I feel that MAB did try to do some stories for the next generation. Adam and Billy were written for a time as the spitting image of their father and brother respectively and I thought both actors are capable for carrying story.

My dream scenario is for Jill to bring on Robin Christopher and Brittany Underwood on as new characters and they have a mother/daughter dynamic. Can’t really elaborate into more, but it was just a thought lol.

This is all completely second- and third-hand, but I used to know someone pretty well who has been a soap scriptwriter for twenty-five years (he’s still in the biz). He never heard a good word about JFP and some of his friends who had worked with her said she was a downright raving lunatic. However, I can’t deny that her first couple of years at Guiding Light were golden. I don’t know how much of that was her and how much was the writing of Nancy Curlee and her collaborators, including such genius scriptwriters as Patrick Mulcahey and Courtney Simon. JFP certainly did assemble a great cast when she first took over.
