Now that our tournament to find the greatest film performances of all time has been completed (congrats to Gloria Swanson for her well deserved win) it’s time to move on to our next tournament. This one will be to determine the best “Best Picture” nominee at the Academy Awards so far.

Due to there having been a staggering 512 films nominated in this category, we’re going to ramp up the number of movies each user can nominate. This time around, each person may nominate up to EIGHT films for the contest. Remember, it can be any film that has been nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture. Win or lose doesn’t matter.

In order for my favored style of bracket to work out, we need 16, 32, 64, or even 124 nominees for this to work. I’m hoping for 32, though 64 would be great.

Nominations so far (Best Picture winners marked with a * )

    12 Angry Men
All Quiet on the Western Front *
    An American In Paris *
    The Apartment *
    Apocalypse Now
    Beauty and the Beast
    Casablanca *
    Citizen Kane
    Dr. Strangelove
    Field of Dreams
    Gigi *
    The Godfather *
    The Godfather: Part II *
    Goodfellas
    The Graduate
    The Great Dictator
    Judgment at Nuremberg
    Lawrence of Arabia *
Life Is Beautiful (La Vita e Bella)
    Lincoln
Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
    Midnight in Paris
    My Fair Lady *
    Network
    Pulp Fiction
    Raiders of the Lost Ark
    Schindler’s List *
    The Shawshank Redemption
    The Sting *
    Sunset Boulevard
    To Kill a Mockingbird
You Can’t Take It With You *

What other films would you like to see in the running? Submit your votes via this thread or PM, whatever floats your boat.

Bear in mind they don’t need to be Best Picture winners. Anything nominated is eligible.

Perhaps you missed that each person could nominate eight. You seem to have posted 24 here. Tell you what though, since between this and JOSE we’re nearly at 64, just cut out eight of these and we’ll begin.

And Life Is Beautiful should be on the short list. It was nominated for Best Picture along with seven other Oscars, and won Best Actor for Roberto Benigni (beating out the likes of Tom Hanks, Ian McKellen, and Edward Norton) and Best Foreign Language film.

    It stays.
