Alright, we’ve hit 32 nominees in the GFP Tournament. Some were nominated through posts in the original thread, others PM’ed. What we’ll now do is send them head-to-head in matchups of two. You pick a winner from each column and PM me your votes. Winners will move to round two, losers will…. well, be honored for having been nominated in the first place. Each VS set was randomized to remove any chance of bias or favoritism.

    Now, the matchups!

1a: Gene Hackman in Unforgiven vs. Anthony Hopkins in The Silence of the Lambs

1b: Daniel Day-Lewis in My Left Foot vs. Julie Andrews in Mary Poppins

1c: Daniel Day-Lewis in Lincoln vs. Katharine Hepburn in The Lion in Winter

1d: Kate Winslet in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind vs. Peter Finch in Network

1e: Charlie Chaplin in City Lights vs. Christoph Waltz in Inglorious Basterds

1f: Ingrid Bergman in Casablanca vs. Leonardo DiCaprio in The Wolf of Wall Street

1g: Anthony Perkins in Psycho vs. Ben Kingsley in Gandhi

1h: Peter O’Toole in Lawrence of Arabia vs. Amy Adams in Junebug

1i: Charlize Theron in Monster vs. Jack Nicholson in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest

1j: Peter Sellers in Dr. Strangelove vs. Robert De Niro in Taxi Driver

1k: Al Pacino in The Godfather Part II vs. Norma Sheerer in The Divorcee

1l: Leonardo DiCaprio in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape vs. Sophia Loren in Two Women

1m: Bette Davis in Whatever Happened To Baby Jane vs. Anne Bacnroft in The Graduate

1n: Dustin Hoffman in Rain Man vs. Gloria Swanson in Sunset Blvd

1o: Angela Lansbury in The Manchurian Candidate vs. Judi Dench in Notes on a Scandal

1p: Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday vs. Meryl Streep in Doubt

So there you have it! Begin the PM’s to vote, and I encourage all to use the forum space to discuss your choices, defend your nominees, gripe about other people’s nominees, whatever! Have at it!

Two matchups in particular I want to defend: The first being 1g, Anthony Perkins vs. Ben Kingsley. Now as great an actor as Kingsley is (and despite thinking he’s a better actor in general than Perkins) I have to say Perkins’ performance in Psycho is just incredible. Films almost never have an impact on my emotional state, but after seeing Psycho for the first time, I was terrified and amazed at the same time. Even though I knew the whole story already – plot twists and all – it was still an incredible experience. And the closing shot still haunts me to this day.

The other matchup I have strong feelings about: 1h, O’Toole vs. Amy Adams. This is partly due to Peter O’Toole being my first nomination, but I genuinely feel this to be the best performance ever put on film. A particular highlight is the scene where his small army finds the village which has been ransacked by an attacking force, and Lawrence must decide whether to retaliate or move on to continue his mission. If you haven’t seen the film, I highly encourage you to. Or if you haven’t got the time, simply go to YouTube and look up “No Prisoners – Lawrence of Arabia”.

Of course, I have not seen Amy Adams’ performance in Junebug, so I should give that a viewing before voting.

My goodness, what choices! I will send my ballots when I get to think about a few of them. That Hoffman vs. Swanson matchup is especially killing me.

I do want to defend a couple of matchups: First being Peter Finch in Network. Winslet was good, Finch was transcendent. If you haven’t seen Network, it is absolutely worth the watch.

The other one is also one of my personal picks, and that is Peter Sellers in Dr. Strangelove. I know it’s De Niro he’s up against, and that’s a tough first rounder, but he has the most comedic performance of the entire bunch, and he plays 3 of the biggest roles in the film, completely differently. I think he deserves the win, and I hope others do too.

Again, some of these are just so hard…

Can I just say how much I’m enjoying this? The results have been quite surprising to say the least. In a good way. It’s loads of fun watching how this is shaping up. Out of the 16 matchups, there’s four ties and one unanimous choice.

So we need at least one more vote to break the ties. If we still have any ties by the final day of voting, I’ll just drop my vote in each instance to resolve it.

Two days remain for voting, and there’s one particularly vicious matchup that needs a tiebreaker.

If there’s still a tie remaining at the end of the voting period I’ll just drop my own vote to remove the tie.
