I’d like to pitch a tournament wherein we vote on the greatest performances ever put to film. Each Goldderby user who is interested can nominate four film performances (by the same actor or different actors). We do this until Saturday. After the roster of nominees is filled, I randomly jumble the list and we send them head-to-head in matchups of two. The winners of each matchup move to the next round until we’ve narrowed it down to one.

Whenever your nomination is in a matchup, you can defend your choice in any way possible

    Nominations So Far

    Amy Adams in Junebug

    Julie Andrews in Mary Poppins

    Anne Bancroft in The Graduate

Bette Davis in Whatever Happened To
    Baby Jane

    Daniel Day-Lewis in Lincoln

Daniel Day-Lewis in My Left Foot

    Leonardo DiCaprio in What’s Eating
    Gilbert Grape

Leonardo DiCaprio in the Wolf of Wall
    Street

    Peter Finch in Network

    Gene Hackman in Unforgiven

    Dustin Hoffman in Rain Man

Anthony Hopkins in The Silence of the
    Lambs

    Ben Kingsley in Gandhi

    Angela Lansbury in The Manchurian
    Candidate

    Sophia Loren in Two Women

Jack Nicholson in One Flew Over the
    Cuckoo’s Nest

Peter O’Toole in Lawrence of Arabia

Al Pacino in the Godfather Part II

    Anthony Perkins in Psycho

    Peter Sellers in Dr. Strangelove

    Norma Sheerer in the Divorcee

    Meryl Streep in Doubt

    Gloria Swanson in Sunset Blvd

    Charlize Theron in Monster

    Christoph Waltz in Inglorious Basterds

Kate Winslet in Eternal Sunshine of the
    Spotless Mind

    Total Nominations: 26

    Actors: 15

    Actresses: 11

I think that it’s a great idea! For voting, I’m assuming you’ll be doing Private Messages?
Only picking two is hard though, you might want to ask for 4 instead, but see how the demand is first. For two, I’m going to go with Peter Finch in Network, and Christoph Waltz in Inglourious Basterds (sticking with your one modern, one older idea).

Actually, I was considering starting a thread for each with a poll option. I know that would create a lot of threads, but if we spread them out enough (say, four matchups a week) I think it would keep the clutter to a minimum.

IMO it’s much better do to it via PM so you can announce it later.

My thinking was if it was done in the open with polls on the threads, then the people who made nominations (we’ll call them, say, team captains) would have a chance to defend their choices in the topic.

Like say, the first thread would be Peter O’Toole vs. Anthony Hopkins. You and I could each present our case, people could vote in the poll, then after a few days I’d close the poll and open the next matchup.

But the PM idea could also work if everyone would prefer that.

I think the PM system would work better, just in terms of not cluttering up the forums, and also for simplicity. It would be one message thread for each person, and you can send a reminder whenever there’s voting if they are a regular voter.

On a side note, isn’t this particular one meant to be all male? From your initial post, I got that sense, but I’m seeing about half half in the comments. I was just curious, because I might want to change my votes the more I think about it if both genders are open…

I love the idea of this tournament but I do agree with this point, as it seems as though this section of the forums is getting busier (which I’m so happy about).

Alright, enough the ayes have it. It’ll be more PM based then.

Yes, it was meant to be just male this time, but enough people missed it I figured it’d be easier to allow both genders.

^Well we would need one more user to submit, and then we would have an even 16. I would support everyone who already submitted to do 2 more, and then you could have one in each quarter of the bracket. Unless you want to just do 16 instead?
