For the last 9+ years, Gold Derby has been my second family, and an
important part of my life. I have made many friends here, some who have become
close. It has been for the most part a great experience. It came at a part of my
life when I needed a boost, and over the years has been a constant that (maybe
second only to my cherished pets) has been a consistent positive in my life.  And among
other things, an opportunity Tom gave here led to a new career in writing, one which has elsewhere gotten me much respect and attention, including, as a wonderful gesture, my long time friend Roger Ebert two years ago linking my articles to his twitter feed.

This is a great community. As most of you know, I have now been barred from
it. Though I am not happy with the manner in which it was done, and suspect that some of it
came from organized campaigns that have been I have been faced with since early
in my time here, I understand why Tom did this more than I initially did. Despite the many friendships and the sense
that my mostly positive contributions have been a vital reason for some
people to come here, my presence is considered more of a negative than a
positive by Tom.  I also have sensed (this is not new) that I grate on some
people and often conveyed in my words impressions that I didn’t really feel (the
quickness of response in online forums, the combative nature of expressing
different opinions, the quantity of posting and immediacy I imagine can be
    daunting to some through no fault of their own). Most people have accepted me;
some haven’t. I accept that this in part has been my fault. If that managed to
convey lack of respect to the overwhelming number of people here, I truly regret
    that.

The biggest thing I’ll miss is what I learn from others. I’ve never come
here mainly to have my opinions dominate; I’ve come to exchange ideas, challenge
others, be challenged, discuss, and above all, learn. Unlike some of what I received, I’ve never
engaged in personal attacks, and take pride in that.

I do think separate and apart from issues that were told me, there were
other things – beyond anything involving other posters here – that made TPTB a
bit uncomfortable with me, and particularly within the last weeks, with some of
the most interesting observations that I wrote on current films. It might
have been the straw that broke the camel’s back.

As I told Tom, I always
understood that this is his site, his rules, even if they might seem arbitrary
and unevenly applied. I appreciate the years of tolerance. It makes it no easier
for me to say goodbye, but the appreciation, despite some hard feelings at the
moment, is sincere. Even more sincere is my total respect for the community and
    my wishes for its future.

I am attempting to figure out a way via the web to set up a site –
something less than a blog, but more than group email exchange – so I can
continue to converse with many of you. Already I have heard from several people
hoping to find a way to do this (I am not the most internet savvy person). If
this happens, I hope to be able to convey the information here.

This has been brutal and upsetting for me. It feels like a form of dealing
with grief, which maybe alone suggests that it’s better not to be so consumed by
the community. But you guys have been a big deal to me, and I can’t thank so
many of you for allowing me to be in yours.

Friends can reach me at scottferguson616@aol.com. I hope to hear from many of you.

WTF? This is not right. You are one of the most important and interesting contributors to this website. Your knowledge and love for cinema is legendary, and even when I disagree with your opinion, I respect and admire your passion.

You will be back. Trust me, I know.

You may not believe this coming from me, but you will be missed.

This should really be on the Oscar board because everyone that posts over there is going to notice SF’s absence.

I’ve let this site’s host know that I don’t think his decision is justifiable. People are going to have to really pick up the slack around here because SF contributed so much – not just in terms of commentary but in actual film-related news.

Again, comparing his dismissal to previous posters, at no point has SF made racist remarks, flooded the site with threads devoted to the same actor, or spewed venom towards anyone and resorted to namecalling. “Old” goldderby had a code of conduct and if a poster failed to adhere to it, they could and sometimes would be banned.

I’ve said far “ruder” things to posters here – have I ever been given a warning, suspension, or banning? No, but apparently a number of posters have complained or threatened to leave the site because of SF. With him leaving and these people either “returning” or “posting,” I’d be surprised to see them add 1/10th of the value that he did.

It’s too bad that those of us that appreciate SF’s writing are never going to see it again because some members have a difficult time finding the “Ignore Users Posts” button that can be found under each and every member’s username.

A significant loss for this community. Hopefully it will be reconsidered.

Best of luck with your future endeavors – should you make a blog/website be sure to keep us posted.

With all due respect to Tom O’Neil, this is a ridiculous course of action.

I’ve been openly rude, condescending and have even flat-out bullied many users on this site (including SF). Where is my notice of banishment?
I’ve made points and argued them in manners similar to SF. Where is my notice of banishment?
I’m a far bigger disaster of a poster on this website than SF and I don’t even have the added benefit of his experience, knowledge, connections, expertise, etc to support me. I’ll ask again: where is my notice of banishment?

And frankly, if a bunch of “different” users on this site, many of whom very likely the same person, threaten to leave because of one user who, frankly, is smart enough to be running his own website, then those users are not worth maintaining.

I sincerely hope this decision is rescinded.

This is saddening news. I respect the hell out of Scott for his passion and love for what he does. I speak for all Goldderbyites (well, except Tom obviously) when I say good luck in all of your future endeavours.

    … What?

This is depressing. While I could understand the umbrage that some posters took with Scott, I can’t believe anyone would truly want him gone from this site. Is there anyone who has contributed more in forum discussions, both in anecdotal history and in interpretating potential business strategies and procedures?

    This just doesn’t feel right.

I have decided to delete the explanation I posted here at first about why this decision was made. Suffice it to say that it’s a good reason. We will let this thread stand as Scott’s goodbye and that’s that.

I hate to see Scott go. We had a lot of in depth conversations and his knowledge of cinema history and internal politics is going to be sorely missed. I’ve never actually seen anything that he wrote that was brazenly disrespectful or offensive. Maybe those posts were deleted or maybe I didn’t read the right thread. But from my perspective, he was just assertive since he has a crapload of knowledge on the respective subjects. In many ways, I always felt that he was the voice of reason that would calm down hasty threads with actual knowledge.

Sorry to see you go Scott. You were actually my favorite poster here.

I, too, am sad to see Scott leave.  Though we never really engaged in direct conversation, I was always interested to read his thoughts.

Regardless of my own opinion, I do want to thank both Tom and Scott for being transparent on this issue.  I much prefer the honestly displayed in this thread than having such a decision swept under the rug.

Tom, I’ve been a longtime reader and poster here. I am quite upset at this news.  I have never seen SF do anything other than be assertive in his position, backed by his extensive knowledge of the industry and passion for it.  I considered him one of the most valuable members of the community.  He has never made racist, sexist or homophobic remarks.  Those are the only comments I would consider to be worthy of banning someone.

I do not believe we should be banning people for having a strong artistic viewpoint and expressing it.  I feel there are a lot of people who quite enjoyed attacking him just because he had a different opinion than they did.  And because he was a very gifted writer who could strongly articulate his viewpoint, other people took that as “bullying”.

This message board has an “Ignore” feature.  If people didn’t want to read his posts, they are free to ignore them.

I’ve been drifting away from GoldDerby more and more often exactly because I feel the level of of discourse here has declined. There aren’t as many smart people with strong opinions who can clearly articulate them.  I now wonder if more of the stronger posters here have been banned in the past?

This might actually be the end of my commenting here.

Edit: GoldDerby promotes itself as having a “fiesty” message board.  But apparently strong disagreement is actually discouraged.

Reading between the lines: Scott was banned because he posted insider knowledge and other insiders felt that if they participated on this forum that it could impact their jobs? Or was it more of a journalistic issue that he violated embargos?

This seems the most plausible reason, since I doubt Tom would ban anyone for insults or anything short of blatant harassment. It has to be beyond something that a poster could use ‘Ignore’ to stop.

If there was some reason other than his strong opinions on film and television that was the cause of him being banned, I would certainly love to hear it. In a PM if necessary.  Because otherwise I take this as a clear statement from GoldDerby that this site discourages intelligent, well reasoned, assertive opinions and discussion.  And there is then no point in continuing to post here.

no. The issue, in part, is his treatment of other posters over many years.
