    Everything he/she just said

What is your first Studio Ghibli film and what did you think of it?

Spirited Away. My mom rented it because she saw it won the Oscar that year and thought it’d be nice, and I complained because I had never heard of it and my 10-year-old ass thought it would be worse than Disney. I ended up completely enchanted by it and moved by the ending, it was cinematic magic, and God, One Summer’s Day, still makes me tear up when I listen to that piano; Joe Hisaishi is one of the greatest composers today and I feel bad I didn’t put him as an answer for my top composers on the first page of this thread… Yeah, I did a complete 180 on it, meanwhile my mom hated it lmao (well, we argue about movies constantly anyway, ily Ma). And I love Studio Ghibli films but I don’t think I’ll feel that same way again.

Answering my own question because I can. Mine was KiKi’s Delivery Service and My Neighbor Totoro. I Owned the original VHS English dub back in the 1990s and my toddler/kid self was slayed by the animation, score, character, and story. It’s amazing what Miyazaki can do with every single damn frame handrawn and him coming up with the story and characters and him being able to push out quality masterpieces back to back and no huge time gap between. Looking back his only bad film is Ponyo, which is still better than 90% of the Disney shit this century.

Kiki’s Delivery Service. I, like @prideful, had the original VHS tape and was completely in love with it. I believe I even watched it repeatedly until the tape fell apart lol.

Do you remember the first movie you saw in the theater? If so, what was it?
