I read on GD that Alfonso Cuaron’s first choices for Ryan Stone and Matt Kowalski in Gravity were Robert Downey, Jr. and Angelina Jolie. I wasn’t the biggest fan of the film personally, but I got to thinking, had they been cast instead of Bullock and Clooney, would Jolie be nominated, or Downey as well? Would the film have been different, or the same?

What matters most in Gravity are the visuals and visual effects. You could cast Donald Duck and Goofy in those parts and the film  would have made just as much money (although, I did enjoy Clooney).

Hey, if Roger Deakins had been behind the camera for Gravity, do you think he would finally win the Oscar? Lol

The film would have been made earlier if those actors agreed to it. But the movie would be different because people look physically different and these are very different actors stylistically so they would have different demands on the production visually and creatively. In small ways of course because the movie would still have to be made in a very deliberate fashion.

This would be better with Donald Duck and Goofy.

I’d rather see Daffy get the role. Comic relief and all.

To actually answer the question asked, I think Downey Jr. probably still wouldn’t have gotten nominated just like Clooney didn’t. He might have gotten more in the conversation since he hasn’t already won any as opposed to clooney who has like 3 or something.

Imo Jolie wouldn’t have done as good a job as Bullock, PLUS I think if she had been cast it would have been much easier for people to discount Gravity as an action film, whereas casting the against-type Bullock actually I think gave it a bit more weight, despite what many people think about Bullock. So Jolie probably would have, but wouldn’t have been the lock Bullock was

RDJ would have been more in the conversation, but ultimately the reason Clooney wasn’t a factor was because people thought he was just playing himself, RDJ would’ve ended up the same way.

I misread Jolie as Jodie and I was like “Holy shit it’d be even better if Jodie Foster replaced Bullock” lol

I don’t think Robert Downey, Jr. would do anything different from George Clooney since they have the same sort of personality.

As for Angelina Jolie instead of Sandra Bullock, I’m not so sure. I don’t know if Jolie could pull off the vulnerability as believably as Bullock did. Bullock has this level of vulnerability and likability mixed with a compellng sort of strength, and while the strength is there for Jolie, she’s also a little cold.

Daffy Duck and Goofy would’ve been light years better than Bullock and Clooney. Blanchett wouldn’t be a lock for Best Actress at all with Daffy in the category with her!

I think it was ok with Sandra. Angelina Jolie and Jodie Foster would be more believable as astronauts but they are too tough to pull off the agonizing fear and that is what made Sandra’s performance great and unique. For either Jolie and Foster it would be yet another story of a brave woman fighting against all odds and both have plenty of that in their respective filmographies already.

No. Angelina would have been a bad choice.
