    Hello fellow Derbyites!

    This is your old friend Pacinofan. Member since, oh I don’t know, 2003 or so. For the past several years I have held an annual event, the Goldderby Rankings, where you send me grades for the films you have seen and then I average those grades and from the results I create Top 10 and Bottom 10 Lists. Some past choices as best film of the year would include “WALL-E”, “A Separation”, “The Hurt Locker”, “Persepolis” and “The Social Network” (I think I am forgetting some). Last year the winner was “Zero Dark Thirty” but it must go down as a winner with an * since I used a simpler methodology to get the results. Last year due to limited time I just collected top ten lists from members. This year I am going back to the old method of collecting grades so the average is affected by a film’s fans AND its detractors.

    So, Goldderby members please send me lists of the films you saw from 2013 with grades attached. The films do not have to be in any order but if you want to alphabetize them or put them in ranked order that can be helpful to me. Each time you send a new list please put it in a new post. I do not go back to old posts once I have recorded the information. You can post your grades within this thread or send me private messages. A film must be seen by at least five members to be ranked.

    The films films grades will be calculated as…

    A+ = 5
    A= 4.5
    A- = 4
    B+ = 3.75
    B = 3.5
    B- = 3
    C+ = 2.75
    C = 2.5
    C- = 2
    D+ = 1.75
    D = 1.5
    D- = 1.25
    F = 1

    Each weekend I will calculate that week’s grades and present a Top Ten list and Bottom Ten for the week on Sunday up until the final Goldderby Rankings which I tentatively plan for Sunday, 2-23. That gives you more than a month to see movies and get these grades to me. I will also create a master list of all the films seen by at least five Goldderby members ranked in order by grade.

    This event is open to all Goldderby members with at least 100 posts. If you do not have 100 posts yet you have over a month to get there (play some games and answer some polls and you can build up your numbers quickly) and then send me your grades.

    So get to viewing and send me those lists. I think this will be a very exciting year for the Rankings. Some years are very surprising, who would have seen “Persepolis: topping the Rankings, but other years can be a bit predictable (“The Hurt Locker” and “The Social Network” certainly seemed likely and also won the Goldderby Awards). This year has a lot of films I could see topping the list (“12 Years a Slave”, “Her”, “Gravity”, “Stories We Tell”, “The Act of Killing”, “Blue Is the Warmest Color”, etc.) and I imagine it will be tight.

    I thank you for playing but you must have 100 posts to have your Rankings counted. You can either repost these later or keep them up but I will not count them until you reach 100.

    If a film has been released in the U.S. than it has a chance of being cited. Cite whatever you want. The worst that would happen is it won’t make the rankings but I do not mind recording it.

    Ok,

    I see that you have No and War Witch from last year. Both of those are a B+ in my eyes. I updated my list above to include nearly all of the movies I saw that were relased this year. There is still a discrepancy in number between the lists, but I can’t find it. I have everything major down, though.

    Oh, and flip a coin for the two rated (B+/A-) because I can’t decide…

    This is the moment where it becomes clear just how embarrassingly few new movies I have seen this year.

    Blackfish A
    The Heat B+
    Frances Ha C+
    Before Midnight D

    Interesting.

    That grade kills me on the inside. What did you vemehently dislike about the third? The bickering and pessimism? It’s my #1 movie of the year, and frontrunner for movie of the decade for me, so I am intrigued by other opinions about the film.

    I would rather people make up their own mind but I do get a certain amount of grades like that so my policy will be to always give the higher grade since the person did not feel completely comfortable committing to the lower grade.
