Sally Field and Jessica Lange haven’t received their star? That’s surprising.

The Walk of Fame is a commercial operation run by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. The stars are for sale and purchased by studios or publicists for their clients in conjunction with publicity over the release of a movie, record or TV show. It is a commercial venture, not some big honor.

The Walk of Fame and the Hollywood Sign are the two major LA tourist destinations that locals laugh at as being anything significant or important.

I agree with you.  I’m still thrilled because I know it wasn’t Lange’s idea but as you said, a studio or a publicist’s.  Still, why did they wait so long do you think?  Is getting a star always in conjuction with publicity over the release of a film or tv project?

In either case, I don’t feel so bad –

It almost always is tied in to a new project’s debut. And the star has to agree to appear – some shun this stuff.

Among Hollywood rackets, this one is relatively harmless and inoffensive (as opposed to, say, the Golden Globes). But it’s not like some industry equivalent to the Academie francaise deliberates in solemn conclave to deem whom among them is worthy of this transcendent honor.

Why doesn’t Beatrice Arthur have a star on the Walk of Fame?

Because no one ever bought one for her and/or she told them she didn’t care to show up. It’s a commercial venture.
